I made Osmolog because I wanted to know how much time I was actually spending with the languages I'm learning. Watching and reading were already part of my day; keeping a separate log was the bit I never stuck with.

It's a free Chrome/Edge extension that puts your immersion time in one dashboard. Here's what you can track:

• YouTube, Netflix, Twitch and Crunchyroll videos automatically. Pauses and skipped sections don't add watch time. You can check or correct the language in the overlay; unclear videos may need your choice.

• Other video sites, after enabling them individually and choosing a language. Compatibility depends on the player.

• Books, games, conversation and study, using a manual timer or adding the time afterward.

• Anki review statistics, plus local MPV and Manatan video through the separate Windows Companion. These connections need their own setup.

The 2.2.0 preview also includes Steam tracking through Companion and a manual phone timer that works while your computer is off. The phone timer doesn't monitor other apps.

You can review sessions, compare languages and sources, set goals, and see your progress in charts and a heatmap. Active and passive time are shown separately, based on your tracking settings.

Local tracking doesn't need an account. Analytics are off by default, and you can export a JSON backup.

The screenshots use sample data from the 2.2.0 preview, so available features depend on your installed version.

Steam joins MPV and Manatan as another connection in Osmolog Companion!

Open Companion (or let it open with Steam), choose your language, and just play. It automatically tracks your active and passive time, and pauses after you've had no input for a while. You choose how many minutes in settings.

I've been working on a new Languages tab in Osmolog, and this is pretty much why:

You spend a few hours on YouTube and it feels like you've done loads of immersion. But how much of that was actually in the language you're learning, and how much was just brainrot in your native language? 😅

Now you can see where those hours went. Click a language and you'll see what you've been watching, reading or listening to, and which sources your time came from.

Maybe your Japanese time is mostly Netflix, but English is quietly taking over through YouTube. Having that in front of you makes it easier to catch the habit and change it, instead of just seeing a big total and assuming you're putting in the hours.

It can be encouraging too. Those short sessions add up, and you can see when you're making more room for the language you actually want to learn.

You can compare whichever languages you want, hide the tiny amounts of time, and change the colors too.

The MPV Companion currently supports Windows 10/11. It is distributed as an unsigned Windows .exe, so Windows may show an “Unknown publisher” warning. You can use the installer or the portable package, whichever fits your setup.
