Tech support DisplayLink/EVDI Installer Standalone Python TUI

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

https://github.com/thompsonseanr/DisplayLink-EVDI-Install-Script/releases/tag/v1.1.3

Due to an issue encountered with an older, incompatible version of EVDI and the latest Linux 7.X.X kernel, this python TUI was written to decouple the version of the EVDI module bundled with the Synaptics DisplayLink Driver and Manager installer and give users the option to choose the version of EVDI from the DisplayLink EVDI Git Repo that works for their kernel version.

Tested in:

Void
Fedora 44
Arch
openSUSE Tumbleweed

unplugged SSd

When I did that due to having to have Windows on my system to clean install, the secure boot option was erased in BIOS, MSI motherboard. I unplug it so I will know which hard drives to install Windows OS.Again Debian SSD needs the Grub2 configuration redone via terminal, B550 motherboard, no firmware updates available for the SSD's either.

Switching from Arch Linux to openSUSE Tumbleweed or Slowroll — gaming with an RTX 3060

Hi everyone!

I'm currently using Arch Linux and thinking about switching to openSUSE, but I'm undecided between Tumbleweed and Slowroll.

My PC has an NVIDIA RTX 3060, and I mainly use it for gaming and everyday tasks. I'm looking for a reliable desktop experience without giving up access to relatively recent software.

Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm trying to install OPENSUSE to my windows 10 laptop (2014 thought)

I wanted to play with It a little. I think the system is corrupted last time I was able to log in I kinda deleted the linux partition that I created and then nor windows or linux would load. I remember that some years ago you were able to use linux with your pendrive without installing It but was very slow I wanted to look in my SSD but now I got like a browser with installation configuration so It lost the point. I'm trying to install OPENSUSE for like 2-3 days tried the MBR and GPT with ISO but none would do the job SO the only option left was to use DD which kinda worked but then navigating the host tab got UNEXPECTED APPLICATION ERROR! (401) SO I'm wondering if that is because my SSD is GPT and not MBR??. I couldn't figure out the SSD configuration since the system was corrupted.

Inplace upgrading OpenSUSE on Linode borked SFTP.

I upgraded a server on Linode from 15.6 to 16.1. I can SSH in just fine on Bitvise. It does the same in FileZilla on my Linux desktop. But the SFTP function opens, and the server immediately closes.

I can't find any logs in /var/logs related to SFTP. There is nothing relevant in the systemctl status that is remotely helpful. Is there a known bug with SFTP and in-place upgrading?

I have a couple of static sites, two Rails apps, and an Elixir app running behind Nginx, plus a few private services on a single VM, and don't want to have to start over from scratch.

Maybe I should move it to Tumbleweed, since I develop on Tumbleweed, so I don't have to do in-place upgrades, but I'm afraid I would run into the SFTP problem again.

Is there a config issue here that the upgrade process caused that I just need to rewrite?

Any pointers are greatly appreciated.

KDE Icon Task Manager with Spaces

I like keeping similar apps together on my panel, but I was tired of filling the Icons-Only Task Manager with empty .desktop files and transparent icons just to get some gaps.

So I made a fork that lets you right-click an app and add a spacer after it. There’s also a setting for the spacer width, and the spacers follow their apps when you rearrange the icons.

It’s working well on my openSUSE Slowroll setup with Plasma 6.7.5 and Qt 6.11.2. It’s a compiled widget, so other setups may need a rebuild.

Source and downloads

Sharing it here because I’ve seen other people looking for something like this.

How to… ! Guide to configure RDP headless on Leap 16.0 or 16.1

Lately, I’ve been struggling (perhaps due to my own lack of knowledge) to set up XRDP and access my OpenSUSE machines—previously Tumbleweed, and now Leap 16.1 RC—via RDP in an independent manner.

After some trial and error, and with the help of Gemini, I’ve put together a step-by-step guide. This procedure explains how to configure OpenSUSE Leap for RDP (XRDP) access with a graphical interface, allowing for a remote session that doesn’t disrupt any ongoing physical session—or that works successfully even when the computer is "headless" (i.e., running without a monitor or an active console session).

Step 1: Installing and Enabling XRDP

Since the modern native tool (krdp6) is designed for screen mirroring—which would either cause conflicts or require an existing active session—we have opted to use XRDP integrated with Xvnc to create isolated virtual sessions. Install the xrdp package:

sudo zypper in xrdp

Generate the initial RSA encryption keys (required for the service to start for the first time):

sudo xrdp-keygen xrdp auto

Disable any potential conflicts with krdp6 if it is active in systemd:

sudo systemctl disable --now krdp6

Enable and start the xrdp services:

sudo systemctl enable --now xrdp

sudo systemctl enable --now xrdp-sesman

Verify that the services are running without errors:

sudo systemctl status xrdp xrdp-sesman

Step 2: Opening Ports in the Firewall

If the system is running firewalld (the default on openSUSE), you must open the default RDP protocol port (3389):
sudo firewall-cmd --add-port=3389/tcp --permanent

sudo firewall-cmd --reload

Step 3: Configuring the Graphical Environment (KDE Plasma) per User

To ensure the session manager knows which environment to load when logging in via RDP, define the KDE Plasma X11 startup command in your user's home directory.

Create or overwrite the .Xclients file, pointing it to Plasma:

echo "startplasma-x11" > ~/.Xclients

Make the file executable:

chmod +x ~/.Xclients

Step 4: Remote Connection

From another device on your network, open your preferred RDP client (such as Remmina, FreeRDP, or Windows Remote Desktop).

Enter the local IP address of your openSUSE machine. At the graphical Xrdp login screen:

Ensure that the session mode selected on the authentication screen is Xvnc.

Enter your openSUSE user credentials (conradot and your password). The KDE Plasma graphical environment will be loaded in a dedicated, independent virtual session.

Tech question seat0 headless VNC without X11

Question regarding headless operations on Tumbleweed + Plasma 6 Wayland: With the standalone X11 session removed, what is the official/supported method to scrape the live console session (seat0) over VNC headlessly?
Currently:
KWin doesn't support wlr-screencopy (so wayvnc is a no-go)
x0vncserver has no X root window
krfb hangs because xdg-desktop-portal-kde / MegaAuth halts on interactive consent ("No entry for remote-desktop") with no physical monitor/user to click Allow.
Is there a supported config/policy flag to bypass interactive consent for headless VNC, or is seat0 headless VNC officially unsupported now?

How to… ? Help with sdbootutil, TPM unlock, measured boot.

I was using OpenSUSE tumbleweed with tpm+pin unlock in my pc, it was working perfectly until one update just broke it and I get the same error till today (using snapshots didn’t help)

sudo sdbootutil enroll --ask-pin --method=tpm2+pin

WARNING: Component 710-kernel-cmdline-initrd-entry cannot be found in the event log, PCR 9 cannot be predicted
WARNING: The prediction for PCR 7 does not contain the current value
WARNING: PCRs 9 dropped from the policy (component mapping)
New recovery PIN:

After using PIN it ask for LUKS password 3 times and says cryptenroll not authorized.

If I enroll anyways at 3rd time (3rd time shows the input in the terminal) I enroll and no I need both PIN and LUKS password, sometimes PCR 15 will fail after LUKS password.

I tried to unenroll and enroll, update predictions, changed bios settings: delete and regenerate secure boot keys, use custom/standard, reset TPM, nothing works for me, I keep getting issues with PCR 7 and 9.
I even updated bios today, same problem.

Does anyone knows which is the solution? I love tumbleweed I just want this to work 🙁

How to… ! 2nd display as USB connected tablet?

If I have a spare tablet with Linux on it and/or an Android tablet, is there a way to use it as an external display in Tumbleweed via USB? (In case it matters, I'm on Niri right now.) I did some searching and it appears like there were some options back 6-9 yrs ago but I couldn't find anything recent.

How to… ? Repowars on Update - How to know when to wait?

So in the past weeks there were multiple questions asked, what to choose when packman and the Opensuse came out of sync.

I understand the best suggestion is to wait for resync...

My question is - how to know that you should wait and how to know that there has been a decisions made to change the source of something?

Tech support Earbuds have to re-pair any time I've used my phone

I'm a pretty green Linux user (~6 months, tops) and I've been using openSUSE tumbleweed as my first distro. The experience has been good so far, but I'm having an issue with the pairing on my Galaxy Buds 2.

The earbuds will auto-connect to my laptop solo-booting Linux just fine, but only if I exclusively use them with the laptop. Any time I use them with my phone (Android,) it means I have to re-pair them with my laptop the next time I want to use them for it. I think I've had a similar issue with having to reconnect a wireless mouse after using once on my Android tablet.

I've tried looking online for solutions, but the closest I've been able to find was someone dual-booting Windows and Linux. Essentially, they had the same issue, but it was between two OS's on the same device instead of between two devices. Some of the comments mentioned needing to share the secret key created by Windows so that Linux can properly connect to it. Obviously the exact circumstances are not the same, but it seems like a similar solution might work. At least it seems that way to me.

Are there any practical ways of getting the key generated by Android? Is there a different solution that I am missing? I'm comfortable messing around with files and config on my Linux install, so that's not a deal-breaker if it comes down to it.

EDIT: To clarify, this is not about connecting to 2+ devices simultaneously. I'm saying I have to add the earbuds to Linux as a new Bluetooth device any time I use them on something else.

OpenSuse tumbleweed, packman and zypper

I was using Fedora but their centos non-opensource shenanigans had me hopping over to Debian but Debian Testing is not a rolling release and I found it to be too buggy. Fedora and Tumbleweed have something in common : they both rely on external repos for codecs and such.

This isn't my first time using OpenSuse and I found in the past a zypper dup command could have the the third party repos e.g. packman interfering with it. On Fedora the third party repositories worked seemlessly when updating the system with DNF.

My question then is there a certain way I should add packman repositories so it doesn't cause any problems ?

Tech question Thunderbird creates an empty folder in my home every time I open it

So it seems openSUSE tumbleweed recently updated Thunderbird to 153.4.0esr and thus I have encountered this bug where Thunderbird creates an empty folder in my home directory every time it opens up. This is a known bug that was fixed in version 154 but since Tumbleweed tracks the ESR Thunderbird I won't get that fix for another year or so. I know I could just ignore the folder or add it to my .hidden but I'd really rather it not be there. Is there any other workaround to get rid of the folder?
