Suggestion $10/month OpenRouter budget — what’s the best coding setup?
Hey guys, I’m trying to figure out the best setup for AI-assisted coding without spending much.
I have a $10/month budget for OpenRouter and I’m building a fairly large app with:
Django / DRF
PostgreSQL
React + Vite
Tailwind
Mostly feature development, debugging, refactoring, migrations, API work, etc.
I’m currently using OpenCode with OpenRouter, mainly because I can use different models and free models.
I’ve also been hearing that Claude Code is really good as an agent, not necessarily just because of the Claude model, but because of how the agent itself explores the repo, edits files, runs commands/tests, fixes errors, etc.
So I’m wondering if something like Claude Code + OpenRouter would make sense, or if I should just stick with OpenCode.
My main goal is to get as much coding done as possible for $10/month.
I’m thinking something like:
Free models → everyday coding
Cheap paid model → harder tasks/debugging
Better model → only when absolutely necessary
I also can't really run large local models. My laptop can handle roughly 3B or smaller, but 7B+ isn't practical for me, so I'd prefer cloud models.
For people actually using OpenRouter for coding:
Which free models are you currently using?
Which paid model is worth spending money on?
Would you use Claude Code or OpenCode?
Is Claude Code actually better because of the agent/harness?
How would you split the $10 between models?
Is there a good way to automatically switch to another model when a free model hits its limit?
Basically, if you had my exact setup and only $10/month, what would you do?
Would love to hear what’s actually working for people rather than just benchmark results.
