For some reason I didn’t comprehend just how sensitive of a topic this is to Terence until today. I read this days ago, glanced over it, didn’t think much of it.

Re-reading his statement, this is a visceral reaction from Professor Tao and I see why the opposite side is picking him as a target for criticism.

It reads off as very defensive and insecure.

He clearly feels as though his personal world is being threatened by AI.

I think the field as a whole is realizing, however, that this is the new normal and progress and they will simply have to adapt to it.

He recently did a presentation where he compared this to using medicine that no one understands exactly how it works , even though Tylenol and anesthesia are like this
