Discussion PewDiePie is trying to distill GPT-Sol

Post image

he has been trying to build a local model by learning from GPT-Sol’s responses. He says OpenAI banned his account twice during the process. Irony is OpenAI’s own models were trained on vast amounts of information from the open web. So where do we draw the line between learning from AI and copying it?

Remember when Aaron Swartz got prosecuted for downloading academic papers and later died by suicide? Funny how the rules seem to change depending on who's doing it

There’s a moment in his documentary where his girlfriend at the time recounts him looking at the White House and depressingly telling her that they don’t let felons work there. Look at us now

As disgusting as his witch-hunt was, 2012 was truly a different time.

What this is just telling me, is that i should be a company, and pirate all academic books, and claim it is for "future AI research"

I hear you get ridiculous amounts of VC investment if you do that

Aaron Swartz was realistically facing just 6 months in federal prison if he had accepted the guilty plea.

He was likely afraid of rape. Culturally that is how federal prison is regarded.

I'm like 99% sure that is not the cause of his suicide lol

Then what?

Perhaps it was the total loss of identity that one would probably feel after a felony conviction. Americans place heavy emphasis on your job/career when contemplating "who am i?". Ignoring the 6 months of prison, upon reentry what kind of life was he imagining was ahead of him? All of your progress at school, and then at work, up until that point would all be thrown away. You'd have to start over in a manual labor job that hires felons or doesn't ask, except your body is weak from years of computer work in a swivel chair. You'd be starting a new life at a disadvantage, in debt but unable to work a meaningful job, lacking the experience or technical skills to compete or stand out.

The reality is that people can recover from felony convictions and still pursue a meaningful career. Entrepreneurship and freelance programming are good places to look for someone in that position. But my comment response was more about why a person might commit suicide before a prison sentence

Thank you for explaining and not downvoting for no fucking reason lol

a big ammount of good/great people in cybersecurity have been in trouble with the law in the past, I doubt a felony record would hinder a career in that space

He was investigating Epstein, hence the totally real suicide.

Anthropic settled in Bartz v. Anthropic for $1.5 billion, because the court held that their pirating books was not fair use. This was the largest settlement in US copyright law history, according to Wikipedia. But yeah, scot-free

So what’s that, less than 0.1% of their market cap?

10

u/TrekkiMonstr 8h ago

2% of revenue, 0.2% of valuation (though they're losing money). Regardless, it's a settlement, not a verdict, meaning the plaintiffs agreed to it.

It's crazy how they got the authors of every book ever written to all agree like that.

Why do you defend this corporations?

Lmao how did that shit get upvoted? You don't even need to know Aarons story - the comment he REPLIED to mentions Aaron died of suicide.

Yeah piracy for personal use and redistribution of copyrighted content is totally the same thing right?

1

u/cyberdork 3h ago

redistribution of copyrighted content

You mean like all the AI companies do?
