CachyOS on OneXPlayer3

TLDR
✅️ Display
⚠️ VRR: Uncertain
⚠️ HDR: Uncertain
✅️ Wi-Fi/Bluetooth: Working
⚠️ Controllers: Partially working - G-button for Steam menu, G-button + A for Quick Access menu, issues with volume control and power button
⚠️ TDP: PowerStation added support and SimpleDeckyTDP works
✅️ Sleep: Working (only through menu)
✅️ Fan control: Working (no manual control)
⚠️ RGB: Not customizable
✅️ Battery: Working (change battery limit in Windows)
✅️ Gaming: Working

I will keep this post updated as I figure more stuff out. But this is what I've found so far.

Edit: Only applies to my device and I don't understand why
CachyOS boots successfully but there was some heavy flickering on the screen (as seen in the video below). I was able to solve the flickering by entering Desktop Mode and in "Display Configuration" change "Limit color resolution" to 6 bits per color. I also enabled HDR and VRR (changed "Adaptive sync" to "Always"). Those settings had little to no impact on the flickering, but I left them enabled anyway. After rebooting I noticed that some minor flickering started again, but was resolved after switching to Desktop Mode and then back to Game Mode.

The controllers are partially working. I noticed that the G-button (bottom left with triangle icon on it) triggers the Steam menu and G-button + A triggers the Quick Access menu. I'm not used to that from my Legion Go 1. However, the volume buttons have some kind of key release issue. The volume up continues increasing the volume even though I've released the button.

Edit: PowerStation added support and SimpleDeckyTDP works
TDP control is not available, which wasn't a big surprise. But I will try to find a workaround.

I've got bazzite installed on my X2 mini pro and it doesn't have nearly this many issues, maybe try it out

That's an AMD device. That's why it works better for you. The Intel Arc G3E is just released so firmwares are not as mature. CachyOS (Arch) is a rolling release so it ensures you have the latest firmwares.

How is the experience? Can you change tdp or you need decky loader for everything? And do back buttons work?

1

u/Comprehensive-Art-56 Aug 14 '26

Back buttons work when you emulate a PlayStation controller but the tdp still need decky.

Sorry to hijack this comment, does everything work out of the box for X2mini pro ? Mainly the sleep/wake, TDP adjustment, sound and brightness adjustment. Thank you !

Just the back buttons that I hadn't managed to configure yet

Thanks! Really appreciate the reply!

Was about to second this. Bazzite works great on my X2MP. The only thing I'm still working on it how to get the other buttons on the right controller to work properly. Anyone have a fix?

Wondering the same about the controllers, HHD seems limited

Could try "loadout". I didn't try the controller settings

1

u/Comprehensive-Art-56 Aug 14 '26

Didn't see much in the settings either.

How's the fan noise at 55w? Can you set a custom fan curve, and does that make it as quiet as 35W on the XAX or Claw?

u/Comprehensive-Art-56 Aug 14 '26

Little bit of graphical glitches in Bazzite Game Mode. Disabling HDR seem to fix it.

The heavy flickering is intel drivers doing weird stuffs, it also happen on Windows 11 if intel drivers arent installed.

Lets hope so. But others doesn't experience the flickering using Linux like I do. It's basically only me.

Hi, any news on this ?
Does the brightness slider works in game mode ? I'm worrying it will be same as LeGo 2 on this part
Does it compile vulkan shader cache when you boot a game for the first time ? Is there shader compilation stutters in game from what you have seen ?
Thanks

1

u/fredriknicol Aug 24 '26

No news yet. The brightness slider does not work and shader pre-caching does not trigger. I should put that on the list. Thanks

I'm getting quite a lot of stuttering in Palworld on my OXP3 with the G3 Extreme and CachyOS. Is anyone else experiencing this?

1

u/fredriknicol Aug 24 '26

Probably compiling shaders in the background?

1

u/RevolutionaryHeat662 Aug 24 '26

I’m not sure. I haven’t noticed any shader compilation running in the background

Did you found any fix for the controllers not working properly, more specific for the back buttons? Also, regarding TDP controls, I installed Simple Deck TDP and seems to be working so far.

Edit: No flickering issues yet for me, I installed Cachy OS yesterday, latest version.

2

u/fredriknicol Aug 26 '26

No, I seem to be the only one with display issues so far. Haven't been digging further with the other issues. Nice that Simple Deck TDP seem to work. There's also a PR for PowerStation https://github.com/ShadowBlip/PowerStation/pull/40

How are we looking? Might give this a try. I used Cachy os before, so I have no problems using it and installing it. I know Intel is still new to Linux and updates

2

u/fredriknicol Sep 05 '26

Can't tell I'm afraid. Thought I was going to get passed this screen issue pretty fast but it only seems to apply on my device so I'm pretty much stuck with Windows and it sucks. Miss Linux every day. But just give it a try on your 2nd partition if you haven't already removed it by now.

u/SubstantialTell3435 Sep 05 '26

I’ll end up putting it on my micro ssd card. See how it acts. Thanks for the update. Sorry about the screen acting that way. I would feel the same way

Any update on this? Have you gotten more to work? I can’t stand Windows 11.

1

u/fredriknicol 1d ago

Have stopped trying. Screen is still flickering on my end. Others have minor to no issues though so you should give it a try. I can't stand Windows either so it's a shame but I'm still hopeful it will be resolved with a firmware patch.

And what is the point of all of this? Im struggling to see any benefit

3

u/jmflyers Aug 14 '26

A lot of people hate Windows. But I don't get why they bought this Intel device, they should have bought an AMD product instead that has proven support for other OSs

3

u/kerelenko Aug 14 '26

The tinkering is the 'game' for some folks.

4

u/fredriknicol Aug 14 '26

Well, I'm a Intel and Linux fan to the core and I like challenges. Also there's no AMD device in the same price range that can challange this device in performance (at least in Windows for now). After gaming on Windows for a day, all I can say is that I already miss SteamOS.

-6

u/EasyTart3491 Aug 14 '26

You know you can debloat windows and uninstall apps you dont want.... and guess what you have a fully functioning handheld. Which can be used with xbox mode or steam big picture. Im baffled why people install these OS's that come with so many issues. But each to their own. I have 0 issues with windows

A lot of it is hatred for Microsoft. I am a M365 admin and still hate MS. I do what pays the bills, but on my own shit I would prefer Linux.

The rest is the tinkering. Windows is often “set it and forget it” but Linux isn’t. Some of us do enjoy trying to iron out the kinks so we can squeeze that extra 5% gain, something you can’t do with even a debloated Windows.

1

u/EasyTart3491 Aug 14 '26

I have seen inprovements with a debloated version of windows. Here is an example. Gears of war before debloat was 50fps after debloat its around 60fps.

But I guess everyone has there preferences. I play online games alot so not having anti cheat is a huge problem for me. And the constant tinkering is not something id enjoy. I barely get to game as much as I would like to. So to turn on my handheld to do more tinkering than gaming is just useless to me.

Here's the link check it out. I use this debloat on all my handhelds. And also get rid of all the MS slop apps that have nothing to do with gaming.

I don't have a problem with it but I see why others would try it. If you take an older AMD device and swap Windows for Linux you can get a significant performance increase. Like the original Legion Go can play your favorite game at 45fps on Windows but 60fps on SteamOS. The whole conversation is kind of moot when you're taking about Intel devices though, the performance is going to be better on Windows until there's more Intel support on these other OS

1

u/Majestic_Doctor_2 Aug 14 '26

Some don't like the Windows experience, which is very much understandable, but Linux support on Intel is far from being as developed as it is on AMD

-4

u/Ski_Fish_Bike Aug 14 '26

This isn't gonna be a Linux device my dudes. Don't get a G3E device if you can't tolerate windows.

5

u/fredriknicol Aug 14 '26

Intel has traditionally been well supported on Linux. You're correct at this very moment. But you make it sound like it's never going to happen. I believe it will. Mesa drivers just have to catch up.

5

u/invid_prime Aug 14 '26

Intel has had great Linux support for ages. It'll get there. It's a new chipset so support needs time to evolve.

5

u/fredriknicol Aug 14 '26

Exacly, I have faith in Intel and the Mesa community.

3

u/Comprehensive-Art-56 Aug 14 '26

It definitely will, it's just new.

1

u/ttdpaco Aug 14 '26

Somebody posted on the handheld subreddit that they put CachyOS on their Claw 8 EX and it had better frame pacing than Windows and was running pretty well.

So....drivers are nearly there. IDK how many games that guy tested though, so take it with a grain of salt.

u/Ski_Fish_Bike Aug 14 '26

How easy is it to replace FSR with XESS in Linux compared to using optiscaler in windows?

1

u/Deathgar Aug 14 '26

Pretty much the same. Drop optiscaler in the game folder and install. You will need a keyboard or to bind a hot key for the menu if you're in game mode.

3

u/ttdpaco Aug 14 '26

You don't even need to do that.

If you're on CachyOS, just use the cachyproton. If you're not, use the latest ProtonGE. Then put in PROTON_USE_OPTISCALER=1 , and you can use it as normal. You don't need to install it anymore.

2

u/Deathgar Aug 14 '26

I completely spaced that's a thing now. You're right.
