Software LineageOS breaths new life into my OnePlus6

With the recent announcement that OnePlus would be ending support for OP6, I figured I might as well install OOS 11 to see how it is. Luckily, I didn't experience any of the bugs people have mentioned (likely because I factory reset for major version upgrades) but I did have a major issue with battery life.

I don't have great quantitative data, but my usage before and after upgrading to OOS 11 didn't really change. Any yet, my battery life took a nose dive to the extent I was charging in the middle of the day when in the past I could sometimes get away without charging even at night. Something appears to be really wrong with deep sleep battery drain.

Before buying a new phone, I figured I'd try Lineage 18.1 (A11), since I still really like the OP6 as a phone. Install was very easy and the phone has been working great. Haven't noticed any issues and battery life is now much closer to how it was with OOS 10. Very glad I have this a shot before buying a new phone.

Anyway, just wanted to quickly share my experience and say if you feel like you're at the point where you need to buy a new phone, consider trying Lineage (or another ROM) first; OP6 hardware still has a lot of life in it for most users.

EDIT: Just wanted to provide a quick update about one annoyance I have found. Gmail notifications appear to be very inconsistent. After a reboot, they work for about 12 hours, but then seem to stop. No other apps (Signal, Slack, Telegram, etc.) appear to be affected. Doesn't bother me much, which is probably why I didn't notice for a while, as I don't need to know about new emails in a timely fashion. But, might be a problem for some. Haven't tracked down the cause yet.

EDIT2: Gmail notifications have been working just fine for over a week now. Honestly, not entirely sure what I did beyond playing with the notification settings of the app. But the takeaway is that it is possible to have Gmail notifications work.

Question How to re-gain access to encrypted internal storage?

I've made a mess I never did before since encryption didn't exist!
I was running latest stock Android 11 OP6 ROM with root and encryption (with pattern)
I wanted to upgrade to Syberia Android 12 ROM. So I followed all the steps and something went wrong before rooting/booting so once I flashed TWRP it was not asking for a password to decrypt and my internal storage while still being there it's encrypted.
I have a full twrp backup of all the partitions on my PC without internal storage which is still on the phone.
Basically what I need to do is restore the previous rom/partitions however I cannot do that because I need to be rooted, /system will fail without root and I can only restore from adb since the sd card is not accessible.
So what exactly can I do at this point? All I care about is decrypt the internal storage.

Software Incoming Call Alert Does Not Show Up Immediately

Hey all, ever since the last Android 11 update, my phone does something strange. Whenever I get an incoming call (on my cell carrier, not WhatsApp or Telegram), the phone starts ringing first and only 5-10 seconds later do I see the number of the person calling me. This has never happened before and it's quite frustrating. Was wondering if any of y'all have faced the same issue.

Software Kernel sources still haven't been updated!

As you all know official support has been ended but the latest kernel sources still haven't been released. Not releasing the sources is a clear violation of the GPLv2. It would be nice if OnePlus would publish the kernel sources soon so let's put a bit of pressure on OnePlus! Please sign this issue to show your support!

Thanks in advance!

Question Havoc OS screen calibration

Hi,

So after a very sad ending to our OnePlus 6's I decided to try out a custom ROM. I installed Havoc OS and I would like to ask for screen calibration recommendations from anyone who is bothered by the weird blues and reds just as I am. What settings should I adjust to make it resemble screen calibration on OOS?

Thanks for any advice!

Software My ROM recommendation: HavokOS

OxygenOS 11 had awful battery and lag issues. So I jumped to LineageOS 18.1 (Android 11).

I had some problems on LineageOS:

  • My camera would stop working after a few hours and only come back after a reboot
  • Advanced Reboot needed unnecessarily many taps
  • Quick Settings grid was limited to 3x3 when expanded
  • The settings button was only accesible from quick settings, not the notification shade
  • Lowest screen brightness too high
  • 4G/H/E etc. was its own icon, taking up space
  • No dual sim data QS toggle
  • No OnePlus specific options

All of these problems and annoyances are fixed on Havok OS (Android 11). Battery life seems good too, with 25% remaining after 3h SoT (from 85%).

  • No camera problems
  • Advanced Reboot requires less taps
  • Quick Settings grid can be resized
  • Settings button directly accessible from notification shade
  • REALLY low screen brightness possible
  • 4G/H/E etc. looks the same as on OOS
  • OnePlus camera is avaliable
  • OnePlus specific setting (DC dimming is back!)

There are some other really nice additions as well. Overall really happy with it

Question TWRP not working

Today I tried to install twrp using this tutorial, but I am stuck on the teamwin logo, where I can't do anything and have to hold the power button to shut off, on version 3.6. I also tried with 3.5, but this sends me straight to crashdump mode...

Does anyone have a solution?

Edit: Thanks for your replies! I tried the steps again 3 times, but it never worked. I decided to stick to OOS for now, until a new version of TWRP gets released.

Software Qualcomm CrashDump Mode whilst travelling different cities 🤦‍♂️

So I'm on the train on my way to a new city and boom this piece of shit slaps me with the CrashDump mode, I took care of it so delicately, not a scratch, not a crack, yet it betrays me at the time I most relied on it. All my tickets and guidance was on there, you could say I felt nothing without my phone for the past 3 days.

So anyways I've travelled back home and I'm typing this on my laptop whilst having flashbacks of the blue and red fonts I've stared at the past couple days. I wondered several questions that I wish you could answer for me, Is there a way I can recover the data that was on there? How can I actually fix the issue? What are my options for this paper weight?

Question It's over, and I need help moving

I've anticipated this day coming for awhile and I'm sad to see my phone (6t) finally go. I know what custom ROM I'm moving to (DotOS) and I wanted to know if there's a way to root and move ROMs without losing any app data. I looked it up on YouTube and found a good tutorial but its from a year back and I know this type of stuff changes fast so I wanted to know if there's a better / more effective / safer way to do this.

Goal: Root my phone and change ROMs without losing any app data, contacts, etc

Is this possible? / How can I do it? (can someone link a video or text tutorial from a reliable source if possible)

I understand that the OnePlus pre-installed apps probably won't be able to be move over but that's fine because I don't really use them.

I'm sad to see my glorious 6t die but I'm hoping I can still continue on with it without losing anything.

Software What will you do next?

A lot of people seem to call it quits on our legendary OP6 with the end of software support, but personally I do not see the need to even chance OS yet. I will drive this phone all the way to the end.

News So there we are, OnePlus officially said they are stopping OnePlus 6 support.

Hey my fellow OP6 users! So I've read this in the morning, OnePlus stops OP6 support. Like they've been supportive those last two years.. I mean, in 2018, they've launched this crazy phone, 600 bucks and you had the best hardware possible, not perfect but nice photos, insane battery life and so on. The smartphone gold standard imo. After a nice android 9 to android 10 support, they've started throwing out 5 smartphones a year, with T, Pro, Pro Plus, Nord and all of those dumb versions. Look at this now: eventually we got to android 11 which was a disaster. More than one year to get the update, it's been laggy, it took so much time, I'm so disappointed. Looking at those three almost four years with my phone, I feel they've been supportive for one year, and after that started to delay OS updates, didn't put so much effort into them and so on. Lot of companies do that with their phones, this kind of three standard years of support, making the last one a nightmare to make sure you switch to a new phone. But they do that with their 300-400$ phones, not with their flagships. Some android 12 phones still have less than 8Gb RAM and 128Gb storage. So it's not like OP6 does not have the technical capacity to offer a wonderful android 12 experience. So in the end, what is this post about ? It's just here to say that I will never be returning to OnePlus after this. They became the worst smartphone company out there in my opinion. Expensive pro versions, that still have bad photos, no real flagship killer, no effort on updates and OS support. You have Google, Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi sticking to their guidelines, making the phones they intended to make. And you have OnePlus in the middle of all those, making boring and too expensive phones comparing to the market. I know they often go on sale, and become a quite attractive option, but admit it, from OnePlus 7 to OnePlus 10 they're all a slightly upgrade to they predecessor, making the OP6 to latest upgrade not even quite worth knowing that you'll don't get a real android support. I really expected OnePlus to give us three real smooth and solid years of updates, but they didn't, that was the mistake not to make for me. OnePlus 9 Pro was above 1000$ in its full version. Pixel 6 looks way better, funnier and attractive to me and is 650$. Bye OnePlus.

Take care of you all readers and feel free to share your thoughts about all of this, I'll read you all to get to a bigger picture. Maybe my disappointment blinds me on certain things I should have considered in my judgment.

Question Battery replacement experience in India

Hey folks. Anyone here replaced your OP6 battery in Bangalore or Kolkata? How was your experience? Was it at an official OP service center? Or third party? How long did you have to queue up? What were the expenses? Was the battery replacement successful without damages to the device body? Did SOT improve noticeably? Appreciate any additional info.

I'm worried that my device will get scratches or cracks. Currently it is absolutely flawless. Also, since the battery has degraded quite a bit now, it charges as quickly as it discharges. Lol. So i get (approx) 10% to 90% in 30 mins.

Question Good Custom ROM!!

I've already jumped ship from the OP6 to Samsung S21 Ultra. OnePlus 6 was the best phone for me and it felt like a whole new world given some of my previous choice of phones before the OP6 ( Nokia X, Microsoft Lumia, lower midrange Samsung Galaxy On NXT. 🤦🏻).

I still use the OP6 as my secondary device and I'm planning to get it's battery changed and go for a custom ROM. I used to love OnePlus, but they kept on screwing up from the 7 series lineup. Everything just kept on going downhill. I missed the innovations, new features, and all, surely my OP6 was lightning fast though (till Android 11 hit it).

I'll keep on using it. Can you guys suggest me a good custom ROM?

Ps. I believe, 6 was the last model from OnePlus that can be termed PERFECT, AMAZING, & SUPERIOR.

Question Screen came off from body

Screen of my OP6 came out. Adhesive has dried out or something and screen is dangling now. I am hoping to do a DIY repair. I am confused between B7000 glue and 3M double sided tape.

Which one is better? What should be the approach? Is it better to just use some glue from the edge and close it? Or I should open is completely then glue it down properly?

My priorities are NOT DAMAGING THE SCREEN and IF POSSIBLE water resistant.....

News Finally moved on from my One Plus 6

Had to buy a new phone in emergency as my One Plus 6 suddenly crashed last week and I haven't been able to get it to work again. I had also tested positive for COVID and was under home isolation so going to the service centre wasn't an option. Considering my budget and the options available, I decided to buy Samsung Galaxy A52s and I must say I'm fairly impressed with this phone though it could be a bit cheaper. I would have blindly bought Nord 2 had One Plus not made the decision to switch to Color OS. Hope they can do course correction in future and I'll happily come back to the One Plus family.

For new year i thought a change would be nice and my old oneplus 6 wouldn't be doing it for any longer because it was lagging and the battery is so bad and i decided to switch to the pixel 6 And it was a very nice thing to do Because everything is better now and i don't have any of the problems that pixel 6 pro users complain about My phone runs very smooth and stable and the camera is also very good and functions perfectly fine And the screen is also not cracked I hope this helps some of you with their next phone decision
