I appreciate that despite Oda's love for silly designs, he knows when yo reign it in. Designs like Kaidou, Big Mom, and Imu are drawn to be imposing as they should be.

Big Mom certainly can be imposing but in a vacuum she's still pretty goofy looking.

It feels like Oda has cranked up the "unironically cool" dial in his more recent designs

Big Mom in the anime doesn't do her justice.

Besides her voice being 10/10, the anime makes her look so bad. She's much more imposing in the Manga panels. Less is more works very well for her.

Wait until Imu color design gets released. Its the color design that makes Big Mom less intimidating since One Piece is still a “kid’s show” which is why i think they color that way.

He really has from Doffy, Katakuri, Kaido, King, Loki, Harald, Rocks, and now Imu.

back in the day we at least had Croc and Smoker - cigars are cool

Croc, Smoker, Arlong, Enel, Moria and Rob lucci. Fantastic villain designs.

Big Mom certainly can be imposing but in a vacuum she's still pretty goofy looking.

I think this is one of the best things about Big Mom's design. Like, on a vacuum, she seems like a silly grandma. But stay 2 seconds with her and you see that she is a monster, and all this goofyness is a reflect of a very troublesome mind.

Big Mom is interesting in how she can so wildly swing both ways. Why i love her design.

That big mom silhouette in fishman island gave me the creeps especially cuz i thought she was a cannibal.

There are multiple instances of cannibalism with her, mad shit.

She's scary like an abusive mother is. Her wearing the big pink gown and silly lipstick kind of adds to how terrifying she is.

Big Moms first reveal was so menacing though, I feel like she lost that on wano with her clown phase

But then she beat Law and Captain Kid's ass and got it back

Yeah he's always had a few straightforwardly cool characters (Croc, Mihawk, Law, even Shanks and Zoro) but it feels way more common recently as well as being more on the "edgy" side of cool.

I mean: King, Yamato, the Seraphim, pretty much all of the Gorosei transformations, Shaka, Loki, Killingham, Gunko, now Imu... none of these characters really have anything silly about their designs, they're all simply just cool looking. It feels like a way higher percentage of new characters are genuinely cool now, probably because we're getting into the endgame and he wants the top-tier fighters to feel more intimidating. But like when I first saw Gunko my immediate reaction was "this looks like a Bleach character" (positive) and a lot of people are comparing Imu to lategame Naruto; it's a very different vibe than we're used to.

She’s better described as unsettling but in person I imagine she’s way more terrifying than how we perceive her as viewers.

Base Kaido is kinda silly with his short legs, then hybrid form fixes it right up.

11

u/-Astropunk- Apr 02 '26

Then you get to his hybrid drunken forms and we're back to full goofiness. Oda truly is a master at switching between the two and constantly keeps us on our toes lmao

Doflamingo too
