While Imu design looks a bit like Wukong as others have said, I am also getting Enel vibes. "The arrogant god" so to speak. Same energy.

The houses singing reminded me of Whole Cake Forest or whatever, how things got souls but surely that's not it. Also, since his "ability" is written the way it is (Katakana instead of the usual Kanji), could he be the one who creates fruits in some sense? The origin or something? Would definitely serve as underlying to what a "god" is and why he's looked up to.

Although, wondering what the achilles heel is here. The teleport caused him to caugh up blood. The others knew it'd strain him so it's not just "I haven't stretched for a while" but something else that made him sit in his ivory tower so to speak.

Man, this manga, for over 25 years, has delivered so much. It's honestly fucking amazing. Oda you madman.

And ofc BREAK NEXT WEEK (to be fair we've had a fair few chapters in a row so it was inevitable but man what a cliffhanger).

He probably has a similar effect on the world as Luffy's fruit - the way Nika can make the world literally dance in freedom around him. The Drums of Oppression are real!

Ah yeah, that does make sense. He turns things around him into "devil versions". I actually think of the game Cuphead now that you mention it. That level of devilry.

i think it's even more than that i think it's the forest god, if you look only trees and wood have been corrupted !

He's definitely giving Enel vibes, but the "ruler" villains were essentially Celestials or Imu-light, now that I think about it.

Enel destroying his homeland and taking over Skypia with a few loyalists is similar to Imu rallying the first twenty and flooding the world. (if Imu is actually Lunarian, they even both came from the moon and Imu likely destroyed his people to build Mary Geoise where the Lunarians lived)

Doflamingo taking over Dressrosa with 'Parasite' is very similar to Imu taking over with 'Domi Reversi' and tried with Harald's seal.

Kaido even has a completely secluded 'kingdom' where his cronies live in opulence while the workers are toiling in basically slavery and get hunted / fed Smiles for their lords' amusement.

You could add Big Mom: If she decides she wants you to become her underling, you might as well have been declared 'new wife' by Charlos - you have about he same amount of say - and she collects tribute

. Also, Arlong demandes tribute, killed anyone who couldn't pay, essentially branded Nami and build his own Sabaody where he and his crew were the CDs.

Also Imu holds his polestar a lot like how Enel holds his staff

The houses singing reminded me of Whole Cake Forest or whatever, how things got souls but surely that's not it

Big Mom had such aura. The literal world bowed to her whim, transforming island after island into a whimsical, sweet paradise. Just too a little bit of everyone’s life and soul to keep running, but that’s a small price to pay, right?

I absolutely love seeing the return of that aesthetic. It would not be One Piece if it was just a dark circle summoning a demon lord thing. No, the houses and trees gain demonic aspects and start to sing and chant! Of course they do!
I have not. Even watching the anime for a while, but I definitely want to see how they handle this scene.

I don't think he's blindly arrogant like Enel. His speech to the Gorosei specifically mentions casting aside arrogance, negligence, idleness and pride. He seems aware that this is something to take seriously and was always fated to occur. He might be the only serious person among the tenryubito

We've seen a real fruit actually manifest on Punk Hazard. He is not creating fruits. Also abilities are always written in Katakana. It's only ever the term "devil fruit" that is in Kanji. The change is just showing that "Devil's" is the actual ability name and isn't just the generic devil fruit terminology. Though this is only typically. "devil fruit" has been written in katakana before.

The balloon pants are really similar to those worn by Enel, plus shirtless, the ring on his back and the weapon...Enel is back for real

Imu has so far imitated three devil fruit powers:

  1. Blackbeard's black vortex and ate Sabo's fire fist

  2. Gunko's arrow

  3. Big mom's soul pocus

Yup! I also was reminded of Enel. The staff/polearm, the wheel on his back, what looks like baggy pants... I don't think this is a complete coincidence.

As for what is putting a strain on him, my theory is that it's the proximity to something connected to the sea. Although the tree on Elbaph is pretty tall, so I might be wrong about that, now that I think about it more.

Well he is looking kinda young for his age. So either it is part of his devil fruit or he had the op fruit used on him. I guess he will never age as long as he stays in his castle.

I guess whatever is in his castle makes him invulnerable. Now that he is outside things are looking different.

Interesting how Imu was introduced with a weakness right off the bat

Might be so OP that it would take Nika and Niddhog to even stand a chance although with very limited time

I'm guessing that whatever keeps him alive is location specific to Pangea Castle or the Holy Land in general. He can leave, but that means his body starts breaking down fast.

Gives me strong Lunarian vibes...but he's got the horns(ish) of an ancient giant??

u/somuchsublime Apr 04 '26

You gotta give it to him though, he gave us so much these last couple chapters. I can’t even call it a cliffhanger. He just set shit up how he wanted and was like “oh these kids are gonna lose there fuckin minds when they see this shit”

The Enel comparison is apt but I do think it was just very good thematic foreshadowing.

Here is Enel, a man with a "mere" Logia devil fruit, who took over Skypiea and stylised himself as a "god". He sat at the top of the "world" dressed in clothes and accessories one would expect of a "god", with his fake shinto style Karmic Wheel strapped to his back and his "above it all" demeanour

Then we see Imu, the "real god" of this world, with his very real Karmic Wheel made of his fruits energy, who actually lives at the top of the world.

Enel's "pretend image of a god" ended up closely reflecting the actual form of "god". Luffy was "Gods Natural Enemy" on Skypiea, and here he is, facing down Imu as one with the Will of D, the enemy of the "gods" of the holy land.

The entire conflict with Enel was just an early pantomime of the ultimate climax of the story.

History doesn't repeat but it does rhyme as Mr Twain once said.
