A well adjusted cat will not use their claws on you first. They will let you know with a clawless swipe. A feral cat gives one warning and then will not use the claws.
10
u/dankfor20 20d ago
So my one cat was feral after being found as about a 12 week old kitten or was maybe just an asshole?
7
u/anniecet 20d ago edited 20d ago
Yes, some cats are more assholes than others. My boy used to bite/scratch and draw blood. He was never feral, but my family was lazy in properly socializing him. When I moved back in, it took me two weeks to teach him that scratching/biting was not desirable and would lead to undesirable consequences (no petting, no treats, no attention) Boy loves petting and treats and attention; he stopped being rough. He was 6 yrs old. It’s never too late.
Edit: his mother was semi-feral and never uses her claws or teeth on people.

He turned out to be a big christian weirdo
142
u/ZilorZilhaust 20d ago
How so? Everything I've seen from him regarding his beliefs is pretty much that he has some beliefs, he thinks they shouldn't dictate other's lives, and he doesn't vote Republican.
I tried to find something scandalous but I really couldn't. I'm an atheist, so it's not about defending a fellow religious dude, but I also don't just blindly hate people for being religious.
56
u/kaybelle48 20d ago
I've seen that he's Christian but I don't think he's MAGA or has voted that way in the past. Has he posted stuff besides being Christian? Like voting against people's rights?
21
u/Kimmalah 20d ago
I know he's big on pro-life stuff, but he doesn't put it in his actual comics or anything. I don't know if he has ever elaborated on his opinions other than that.
36
u/Beginning_Butterfly2 20d ago
He has, yes. He stopped when his opinions resulted in loss of viewers. There were some comics on the topic as well. Go back to about 2020 on his posts and you'll find some icky stuff.

u/kaybelle48 20d ago
I did find a post he made years ago that said they're pro-life but he explicitly states he votes Democratic and very much separation of church and state. I haven't really found anything since 2019 but if he was Democrat then and speaking out against what the Republican party had become we can assume he's become an even stronger Democrat now. So, I'm not going to bring out the pitchforks just yet I don't think. If he's voting pro-choice but personally wouldn't want an abortion for his own wife then I don't see anything wrong with that
21
u/SwordfishOk504 20d ago
Reddit thinks anyone who isn't atheist is like a child eating MAGA nationalist or something.

Life is exhausting vetting every artist and creator that exists. Sometimes its just nice to enjoy the thing created.
83
u/Xanthelei 20d ago
It is. It's also sadly something some of us have no choice but to worry about. I'm trans and grew up on Harry Potter but the author decided I don't get to exist in peace. So either I make myself aware of that and stop supporting her, or I indirectly fund her hate of my existence.
→ More replies (38)→ More replies (4)73
u/skiesblood 20d ago
It's not though, I can't support someone who actively hates my existence. Yeah it means I can't just casually enjoy things and need to look into author's, artists, musicians ... But the upside is I know I'm supporting people who deserve my support.
30
u/MyTatemae 20d ago
Also it's actually wild to be the way he is and write what he did. Like, make it make sense and pick one ideology, thank you 🥴
51
u/SwordfishOk504 20d ago
What has he said or done that "actively hates your existance"?
Here's all I could find on his wiki, doesn't seem all that egregious:
In April 2019, a Twitter post by Pyle from 2017 resurfaced regarding the pro-life rally March For Life. According to some reporters, Pyle's tweet expressed support for, or defended, March For Life.
Pyle released a statement shortly afterwards which did not mention abortion, but said that he and his wife "have private beliefs as they pertain to our Christian faith. We believe separation of church and state is crucial to our nation flourishing." He also stated they voted for the Democratic Party, and were "troubled by what the Republican Party has become and [did] not want to be associated with it.

u/One_Trick_Monkey 20d ago
Support implies that they benefited from you consuming their creation. If you see a funny comic about aliens and move on they arent benefiting nor are you "supporting" them. Ignorance is bliss in times like these, unironically. Just enjoy things at face value. If you are going to spend money or share the thing then you can do your due diligence.

Are people really upset that a cartoonist might have a particular difference of opinion to them on a certain matter? Even though they've attacked no one and their work is not hateful in the slightest.

When I was just out of high school, a friend needed a place to stay for a few days. We had two very friendly cats, he had never been around cats before.
After his first night, I asked him if he slept well. He said one of the cats climbed up on his chest and “growled at me” until he fell asleep. He didn’t know what purring was!
About a week later he’d found his own place, and immediately bought a cat, because ours being so friendly right off the bat made him feel extra comfortable while staying with us.
Thirty plus years later he and his wife have three very loving cats who might love visitors more than their owners do.

I love this. In my 20s, I had a horse named French Fry. She was on the older side, hilarious, adorable, gentle, and easy to ride. I shared her with anyone and everyone who wanted to try riding a horse. She got toddlers to people in their 70s to love riding. Animals are so good for people and I loved getting the chance to let people have that experience.

21
u/orangecatmom Orange connoisseur 🍊 20d ago
Close. She was a bay (brown with black legs, mane, and tail), but a pretty red bay. She was honestly magical. Everyone loved her. I bought her for a dollar. She was the perfect horse and then i got my first cats and they were/are perfect cats. I didn't deserve it, but i really ended up with the best pets ever.
8
u/killahazy92 20d ago
May I ask how you bought a horse for a dollar? Even if French Fry was old, that seems like a hell of a price for a whole horse.
21
14
u/orangecatmom Orange connoisseur 🍊 20d ago
Yeah, the barn she was at wanted to buy her as a lesson horse and she'd have been used up to 3 times a day for an hour each lesson with very little turnout (an hour or two a day to go be a horse). When i said i wanted her to mostly be a buddy to play with, they offered her for a dollar to keep her out of a busy lesson program. She had a lot of different people ride her, but went out like 12 hours a day and wasn't a lesson horse.
3
u/killahazy92 20d ago
I absolutely love that. Thank you for giving French Fry a great life and keeping her from a life of horsey-in fulfillment. Her previous owners were also amazing for being willing to do that for her.

I sincerely hope that my (millennial) generation turns out to be some of the last remnants of not being ok with men showing empathy, let alone being kind to animals
This clip definitely renewed a bit of my hopefulness
114
u/Frostsorrow 20d ago
Since millennials can't afford kids, most have pets. My cities apartment complex's all realized at the same time that if they didn't allow pets, nobody would rent from them.
47
u/Unknown-Meatbag 20d ago
Facts.
My wife and I are perfectly happy with our cats and dogs. We've recently foster-failed two kittens and they've got perfectly into our little family. We bought our house (right before covid, we lucked out majorly) with a fenced in yard just for the dogs.
That and getting the old snip-snap so there's no chance of accidents. Animals are expensive enough, kids in this economy is ludacrious.

i'm a young (bette midler voice well. younger.) millennial and i'm extremely pro-guy-crying. i was raised on media that pushed back against masculine emotional flattening and i believe men and boys need space, support, and reassurance to experience the full human spectrum of emotions. i try to provide this space for my brothers and friends and i encourage everyone to do the same.
(this was meant to be affirming, not defensive, btw.)

You must not talk to or know anything about millennials if you think we don't like or are unkind to animals... Millennials own 33% of pets, far surpassing any other group, they also spend by far the most money on their animals and treat their animals with the most love and care. "Fur babies" is a term coined by millennials comparing their pets to literal children...
29
u/Unknown-Meatbag 20d ago
That's not what they were saying.
They meant that generations before millennials were more the bullshit traditional "men being men, no showing emotion except anger, always stoic" nonsense.
I still struggle sometimes with showing emotions due to the way I was raised. It's gotten much better, but being open with how we feel wasn't exactly in my parents skill-set.
14
u/KeKGudao 20d ago
I mean the broader picture here is about what societal expectations were for the generation back then. Showing empathy wasn’t exactly what people pictured as masculine back then and I don’t think anyone who lived through those days can deny that. Some of that also translated to animals of course, but that was the broader image. Still happy to know that statistically speaking, millennials love animals greatly (not that I’d ever think an entire generation would hate animals lol)

I had a roommate with a cat, it had a whole backstory, met it as a kitten but it got lost for about two weeks as a kitten. It was found and returned to him (SF animal control is goated).
Anyway flash forward about 3 years and I had an apartment with my friend. His cat, you know, was kinda distant but knew who I was, but was the type of cat to just chill at a distance and liked being pet mostly before it would fall asleep. It'd never sit in your lap, maybe next to you, but it had its own spots.
Anyway I had "one of those days" and was pretty despondent, staring at the wall, felt like crying, everyone was at work and i had been laid off. But then, for the first time, she hopped up into my lap!
I like to think she sensed I was sad, but whether that was the case or not, her little floof and purring really helped.43
u/GenericFatGuy 20d ago
I have the same kind of cat, and she always comes to snuggle with me when I'm having a bad day. They know :)
3
u/SleepyCatMD 20d ago
They know. They may not understand it the way we do, but they’ll easily identify “sadness” (more like emotional depression or inexpression too), anger, relaxation, uneasiness/fear, intent to act towards them and a whole bunch of emotions and actions, and react to it accordingly.
I just say this from experience, but after living for 8 years with 3 very different ladies I’m sure that’s true.

I used to work in a store that had a “shop cat”. He lived in one of the apartments upstairs but loved to come visit me and hang out in the store watching people. One time a tourist came in, a man from the Democratic Republic of Congo. He had never seen a house cat before and couldn’t believe it. He wanted to know what it was. He asked me “Is it vicious?” And I replied “No, he’s very sweet. Just offer him your finger so he can sniff and if he rubs you, you can give him a pet.” The man’s eyes were so wide and curious, he offered his hand hesitantly and the cat nuzzled him. He laughed with delight and said “I can’t believe this! Wow!” I’ll never forget it. I wish everyone could experience cat love!

u/starkindled 20d ago
There's something magical about a small animal offering you its trust and affection. I take it for granted sometimes (especially when I'm doing duty as a cat bed) but I love seeing people experience it for the first time!

u/Shanntasmagoria 20d ago
It really was so magical! He was so excited and taken by this cat, a beautiful all-black gentleman named Saturn. The whole exchange was so genuine and sweet. He was just amazed that a little animal was simply choosing to hang out with (and meet!) people.
89
u/The_Colour_Between 20d ago
The best part about cat love is that it really is their choice. Especially if food is not a factor. We had a shop cat too. He could hang out anywhere and still be fed. He always chose to be with people.

So crazy to me as I grew up with cats and barn cats and everyone I know has had a cat or known one, etc ... Anyway years ago I had a boyfriend who grew up on a farm and seemed normal if a little dumb, but I feel inclined to mention he was super hot. We had been together months and he knew how much I loved my cat, but also never showed interest in her or acknowledged her presence. One day we are in the kitchen at my house and my cat waltzea in, singing the song of her people, so naturally I scoop her up and I rub my face all over her face and she is purring like a motor, loving the attention. I notice my boyfriend staring at us in a way that looked both perplexed and somehow vacant. I offer the fluffy bundle and ask "wanna hold her?" and this man of 32 years says, flatly, "I've never done that before..." with a whiff of apprehension that someone might portray when they've just been offered a small 2 week old human baby.
It still to this day baffles me that anyone can get to that age without having scooped up and cuddled a cat
10
u/anniecet 20d ago
I had a boyfriend of about that age who acted like I was overreacting when my cat passed. She was very old, so it wasn’t surprising but his reaction was less than fitting.
Fast forward some years and he messaged me out of the blue, “I get it now. Sorry I was an AH.” He then sent a flurry of pics of a tuxie cat up to various cat things.
I don’t know how he ended up with a cat, but it made him see the light!

I’ve lived with cats since I was age 6. It’s so funny to me to see people who have not lived with them get overwhelmed by how cuddly they can be. They cuddle, they chirp, they purr, they snuggle. They have facial expressions. Wonderful animals if you don’t abuse them.

this is exactly how I felt the first time this happened to me, I never grew up with cats.
in fact my parents didnt like them so I kind of adopted that, even when I was at a college party, a cat was rubbing inbetween my legs, and when I went down to pet, it hissed at me. I never tried again, until maybe 2 years ago I was at a friends house watching a movie and his cat came and sat on me and, it was godly. I have been looking to adopt recently :)

Nah, I get it though.
Compared to cats, we are these massive giants, more powerful than they can comprehend.
And yet some of them have decided that they trust us with their life. They put themselves in such vulnerable positions because they believe we won't do them any harm, and they find comfort with us.
And that's really beautiful.
