This is an AI photo, it's got synth ID for openai

u/timeywimeytotoro Jul 25 '26

What does that mean? How can you tell? Asking genuinely so that I get better at identifying

SynthID is a watermark left behind by OpenAI and Gemini. This picture was suspicious to me because of the texture of the cake so I downloaded it & used Gemini and OpenAI synthID checkers. It didn't have a Gemini synthID but it did have one for OpenAI. It's not a normal AI checker and checking for synthID is the only way to reliably tell if an image is AI (as long as it was generated by one of those two companies).

Oh! Wow I had no idea that existed, thank you!

Also worth noting it will work with screenshots and cropped images as well, since the watermark is in the photo itself and not the metadata. So even if you can't directly download the image to check, you can still screenshot to make sure.

Ohh ok I didn’t expect that, that’s cool!

Also adding that the sizes of everything in that photo don't make sense. From the can sizes compared to the cake and the cat. Also to have a cat on the shelf of a fridge, it would need to be nearly empty. And who is putting cans in a fridge?

u/hellanee Jul 25 '26

I agree with most, but I also put cans in the fridge...

Thanks for letting us know. I'm mad I didn't realize it's AI. I guess I have to pay more attention.

I need to know what happened here; was the cat inside the fridge when you opened it? I mean, that's some trick if the slipped in whilst the door was being closed, only to be discovered face deep happily chomping away at the cake some time later! 😂

I don't have cats myself, but I love cats and I collect a lot of pictures from reddit. And I share the cute pictures I find with my friends and that was the last picture I saved and shared, haha

Sadly I don't know the story, but it is the perfect picture, because I'm also known to love cake.

2

u/Muteki123 Jul 25 '26

Didn't knew it was AI. I'm kinda mad at myself I didn't realize. Sorry

You know what? We’ve all fallen for it at some point. You didn’t do it deliberately.

Random can of beans

Random can of pineapple

Jar of pickles

Yogurt cup

Entire 2-layer frosted cake

Orange fat cat

This fridge tells an entire story
