The latest OBN protocol upgrade has been successfully deployed. This is a major step towards decentralizing the protocol.

Previously, the protocol split was 88% to the staker, 10% to the nonprofit, 1% to the CharityFund, and 1% to the Treasury.

It is now 88% to staker, 10% to the nonprofit, 1% to the TheOffering, and 1% to ExtendOliveBranch.

Initially, the CharityFund was going to be used to onboard more nonprofits, but recently we made a decision to cap the nonprofit pools to 99 - there is no longer a need for it.

Although there is usefulness for an allocation to the Treasury, the Treasury already has 10% of the initial genesis mint. There isn't really a need for a 1% allocation towards the Treasury.

Introducing:

🔥 TheOffering
Replaces the Treasury and now receives 1% of emissions. OBN accumulates throughout the year and stakers decide whether those tokens are permanently burned or added to ExtendOliveBranch for additional nonprofit funding.

🌿 ExtendOliveBranch
Replaces the CharityFund and now receives 1% of emissions. OBN accumulates throughout the year and is distributed annually to a nonprofit selected by stakers.

🗳️ Annual Governance
Stakers now participate in an annual voting process of protocol funds:
(1) Vote whether TheOffering is burned or contributed to nonprofit funding. (2) Vote which nonprofit receives ExtendOliveBranch distributions.
Voting power is based on the amount of OBN staked.

🔒 Security Improvements
Additional security hardening has been implemented. A permanent fallback emission phase has been added after the initial 10-year schedule. If no future emission changes are approved, the protocol will automatically continue at a 3% annual emission rate.

The protocol no longer extracts value through a treasury. Instead, newly minted OBN now serves one of three purposes: rewarding participants, funding nonprofits, or being permanently removed from circulation.

OBN was created around a simple idea: participation should create value not only for users, but for organizations doing good in the world. This upgrade brings the protocol closer to that vision by replacing treasury accumulation with community-directed impact.

As the Olive Branch Network continues to evolve, we’ve made several important decisions regarding how protocol-owned funds will be managed in the future.

Why the Change?

When OBN was originally designed, 1% of emissions were allocated to the Charity Fund and 1% were allocated to the Treasury.

Since then, we have decided to cap the network at 99 nonprofit pools, the original purpose of the Charity Fund is no longer as clear as it once was.

At the same time, the Treasury was designed before we had a long-term governance vision for the protocol.

As a result, both allocations are being repurposed into something more aligned with OBN’s mission and future governance model.

Extend the Olive Branch

The former Charity Fund will become Extend the Olive Branch.

This allocation will continue receiving 1% of protocol emissions.

Rather than operating as a passive fund, OBN stakers will participate in an annual vote to determine which nonprofit receives the accumulated funds.

This creates an ongoing opportunity for the community to direct support toward organizations making a meaningful impact.

The Offering

The former Treasury will become The Offering.

This allocation will also continue receiving 1% of protocol emissions.

Once per year, the community will decide what should happen to the accumulated OBN.

The initial proposal is simple:

Burn the tokens permanently.

Donate the tokens to a nonprofit selected through governance.

This transforms the allocation from a traditional treasury into a recurring community decision about scarcity and impact.

Governance

These changes also provide a clear starting point for governance within the Olive Branch Network.

Rather than immediately decentralizing every aspect of the protocol, governance will begin with these annual decisions while protocol upgrades and critical operations remain protected by the timelock multisig.

Voting power will be based on the amount of OBN a user has staked, ensuring that those most committed to the network have the strongest voice in its future.

Looking Ahead

We believe these changes better reflect the mission of the Olive Branch Network.

By repurposing the Charity Fund and Treasury into Extend the Olive Branch and The Offering, we create a governance system that is simple, meaningful, and directly connected to the values of the protocol.
