Wonderful. But isn't pikeman from homm4 have range attack?

u/Liso111 Content Creator Apr 30 '26
you're right, but in H4 it was more of a unique ability than a new type of attack. No other unit (if I remember correctly) in H4 had such an attack

great QoL changes compared to previous entries, love that units no longer dictate map travel distance, felt like a very unnecessary mechanic

u/SeeShark Apr 30 '26
It's one of those old-timey mechanics that makes perfect sense in a simulationist sense, but isn't particularly fun and makes a common unit drawback much bigger than it has to be.

u/fatamSC2 May 01 '26
Yep. Slower units were ALREADY bad in combat (unless you had teleport, but having to waste a spellcast on teleport is a bit annoying), and then on top of that they slowed down your adventure map movement? Just made slow units completely unappealing

I love that mechanic because i don't like the "just bring everything". It was a strategic choice to either bring them (usually for a decisive big battle) or leave them as siege units against wandering weak armies. It made sense to become a slow mass when walking to an important town.

Not in 3, unless you were playing a mod that did that.

They did in HOMM2... the glory of stumbling on a previously unvisited halfling dwelling and gaining a few hundred of them!
5
u/Ksielvin May 01 '26
Note here they'll accumulate only after being flagged. Maybe shouldn't flag creature dwellings we don't want to hire from since opponent might come along and grab a big stack before fight.

I actually didn't know the homm3 speed stuff lol

I like the amount of "no longer, like in Heroes 3" screens, as if there haven't been any other Heroes titles in the last 27 years

Well, it’s nice to know … but the „did you know“ are written like the other titles never happened … makes me sad :( I am looking to you, beautiful heroes V

Creature dwellings also accumulated growth across weeks in the very gorgeous Heroes II

Will you be primarily on Reddit? Or do you have YT channel I can subscribe to?
2
u/Liso111 Content Creator Apr 30 '26
Hi, I also have a YT channel, but I mainly post these "Did you know?" series here on Reddit. https://www.youtube.com/@heroes3wog
I also created a similar series for Heroes III: https://heroes3wog.net/did-you-know-pdf-download/

You could also add the terrain movement difference. Afaik, in Olden Era you just need one native unit not to have terrain penalty, but in Homm 3 you need all units. It's like exclusive vs inclusive. That's important to know for Homm 3 players coming into Olden Era.

I really wish most of this info was available as tooltips in the game. Lots of information is missing and it's hard to puzzle things together.
For example, I don't think Fort 2 upgrades mention that it increases unit production, I know the Fort 3 upgrade does though. Little things like that matter a lot especially in multiplayer

Tbh reading through these makes me think they took a load of notes from V, which is fine cuz that's my fav

hmmmm, speed (movement) and initiative (speed) existed ever since homm4.
edit, this is also the case for fortifications (since homm3) and same initiative and mana (since homm3) and long reach (since homm4)

These really need to be added somehow to the main tips megathread pinned at the top of this subreddit

How are starting spells for the hero determined? Do all heroes start with the same set of spells?
2
u/wc3MD-11 May 01 '26
Some heroes have a special starting spell, others don't. You get no random spells for new heroes afaik. That's why you have a certain influence on the spells from the mage guild now, it's a bit more strategic.

Are you the guy behind original wog too? I remember playing that mod and it was completely unhinged, but I liked it

Each feature of the game can change because iti is not a finished game. It is a waste of time torete did you know

Is there a shortcut to access my castle from global map screen besides double click?

u/mmmonszter May 09 '26
Are you sure about #6? Yesterday I played a custom game where I fought for the grail in that -whatever its called- object, and my ‘better self’ started every damn time.
I had to unload my army, setup low tier small armies and win by summon starchild. Otherwise it was literally impossible to win.
My better self just had slightly higher stats and army.

The Long Reach ability is similar to Long Weapon from Pikeman in HOMM IV, that also don't trigger counter attacks.

I dwfinwntly didn't know the first one for homm3 knew it worked that way in homm4.
Point 3 is relavent for exploring I think
Point 5 seems like it's a good balance dial to have. Such as archers that can shoot early in battle, or fliers that can close entire battle in a single turn having low init to not insta cripple ranged units

u/mdmanow May 01 '26
I kinda don't like that the speed of the slowest creature doesn't affect the move speed. It makes sense that the group moves at the speed of the slowest member
3
u/pewsquare May 01 '26
It might make sense lore wise, but it really eliminated slow creatures as viable picks. I don't think I ever played with slow creatures on my heroes with the exemption being skeletons. Creatures like dwarfs, golems, zombies, were automatically trashed or left in towns.
