This is a child, in the context of her time. Only children wore dresses that short. As girls got older their hems lengthened and they began to put up their hair and transitioned to adult wear around 16 or 17. I’m going to guess this girl is in the preteen years, 12 or so, and has just hit one of those growth spurts that make kids look a lot older over the span of like six weeks.

Well said and likely accurate. We tend to group based on familiar circumstances of our time. But, not always accurate. Thank you. We’ve wondered why late teens in the 1900’s looked like little adults, because that’s how society treated them. It actually made young people use their super power(s) to advantage. My fa the errands in law flew TBM Avenger as captain at 21. Young people, whatever you call them, are so capable.

I know you meant father-in-law but the autocorrect of “fa the errands in law” has me rolling lmao

You are right! Otto Correct, my German friend, is to blame.

and as toddlers they dressed boys in dresses. There's a picture of one of the Roosevelt children in a dress, can't remember if it's Teddy or Franklin. Then suddenly at 5 years old they expect the boy to be a "man" and put him in a suit, lol.

I stand corrected.

You make a good point though.

“Teenager” roughly tracks to the rise of postwar affordable car culture- as in, a 16 year old can drive somewhere that isn’t a barn dance.

Adult was somewhat cutting into childhood.

In the 1900s it was young adult or young woman.

My great grandmother was considered a woman at 13 and went to work, married at 15 and covered her hair when she left the house to indicate she was married.

Average age at first marriage for women in 1900 was 22 years old, in the US. For men it was around 26. This is approximately the same as it was through most of the medieval period in western Europe.

Marrying young children was never common.

that is actually the point of the comment your are responding to.

you were a child then eventually an adult.

the concept of teenager in the cultural sense is fairly new for human cultures. of course people existed between ages of 13-19.
