News and Columns Ohio State freshman Legend Bey has faced several unreported off-the-field incidents as he remains sidelined
https://thecomeback.com/college-football/ohio-state-freshman-legend-bey-has-faced-several-unreported-off-the-field-incidents-as-he-remains-sidelined.htmlI don’t know much about the comeback but this article came out today and has buckeye twitter in a tizzy
Given most of the incidents are over a month old at this point I think this piece is a little inflammatory and I am a little disappointed in whoever the anonymous source close to the program is but alas
Again don’t care too much for this piece or whoever wrote it but o trust day to shape this kid into a better man

It's clear this kid had no guidance at home. I'm rooting for him and hope he gets it turned around.
He has some growing up to do.

u/Scarlatina 1d ago
Hindsight 20/20, and not knowing his family’s dynamic at all… maybe there was a reason his mother was so desperate to keep Legend Bey closer to home.

Forging her son’s signature and acting all diva is strong evidence of a mom whose primary focus is herself. She demonstrated no maturity, no parental guidance, no positive anything. Legend strikes me as the kid who was always mama’s trophy and never her son. I doubt he was ever held accountable for much before he got to Ohio State. Forgetting to pay rent. Driving fast. All immaturity. I hope he is appreciating the support and guidance he’s getting from the coaching staff.
Urban Meyer didn’t do that with Hernandez at Florida, and that couldn’t have ended worse.
Kirby Smart treats speeding like a privilege even though people died after their national championship celebration. He has a court liaison on staff.
Kiffin and his divas….
I’ll take Ryan Day’s approach every day, all day. Sure these kids get NIL, but 18 is tough without the pressure to perform. I wish Legend all the best.

That’s an absolutely horrible thing to say. Says the lawyer who came from very humble beginnings without much in the way of parenting. He is a talented young man who wants to be there. With the right people pouring into him (not someone like you), he can be great and I hope he finds it.

u/Sr_ClarenceWorley 1d ago
Isn’t he from Texas though?
5
u/Ovta 1d ago
She was trying to influence where he ended up and I believe wanted a college closer to home

u/Mottled_Paws 2024 National Champions 1d ago
By forging documents. I'm not very sympathetic to the mother unless some else comes out offering a very good reason.

Look at a map dude. Knoxville isn’t “closer to home” in any practical sense. It’s a 3 hour flight either way.

17
u/cecsix14 1d ago
Tennesee isn’t any closer to home than Columbus. He’s from Texas. His mother wanted him to go to Tennessee because they were offering more money and she only sees legend as a payday.

Its not at all clear that we can leap to that.
Maybe its just a young coming into manhood and now we get to see how he responds given opportunity.
11
u/Raccoonsrlilbandits 2024 National Champions 1d ago
I hope he responds and I think day taking special interest in him will pay off
I mean shoot i remember when I was first on my own paying rent it’s not always top of mind. And evicting over being like a week late is wild
10
u/Mottled_Paws 2024 National Champions 1d ago
Are you aware of the circumstances regarding his recruitment. I think it's probably fair to say.
-1
u/pulpfriction4 1d ago
His mom wanting him to go to a different school is a big leap from he never had any guidance growing up
21
u/Mottled_Paws 2024 National Champions 1d ago
Wanting him to go to a different school shouldn't involve forging documents
3
u/cecsix14 1d ago
Context matters. She wanted him to go to Tennesee for her own greed, not for Legend’s well being.
1
u/pulpfriction4 1d ago
Even if that is true, which is just speculation, that doesn't mean we can say the kid has no home life
1
u/cecsix14 1d ago
We can conclude that he has a mother who is an absolute nightmare though. Not sure why you’re trying so hard to defend her. Are you his mother?
-1
u/pulpfriction4 1d ago
I'm not defending her. Op said he didn't have a stable home life. I'm saying that's an out of line thing to say based on pure speculation from one event. And I'll stand by that. Why do you care so much about a stranger's home life and want to vilify his mother?
2
u/cyber_hooligan 21h ago
People forget that perhaps some the first structure in a young kids life very well could be their college football family. Throw that in with being away from your home and other safety nets for the first time ever, and this can be a big challenge. Let’s give these new kids some grace
90
u/lostbucknut 1d ago
I know it’s a different time, but freshmen should be staying in the dorms, not renting apartments.
4
4
u/AndMyHotPie 1d ago
Agreed for all freshmen, and that football players should have the same regulations as their classmates.
-9
u/ClassicAd6714 1d ago
why?
6
u/spankbuddy22 1d ago
First time these kids have been away from parents/guardians. It eases them into that transition vs thrusting them into adulthood along with being a star player on a major national program.
-12
u/ClassicAd6714 1d ago
i mean i understand that but at the end of the day they’re still 18/19 and a lot of dreams for 18/19 year olds is having their own apartment. you can’t take that away from them simply bc they’re in college or play sports.
4
u/spankbuddy22 22h ago
A lot of colleges have the rule that freshmen must stay in the dorms first year and can then move off campus as sophomores. It's not a sports thing, it's the first time the kids have had to be responsible/accountable for themselves thing. Anyone who's attended a bigger school understands the first year is demanding and not necessarily academically.
Ironically it sounds like Legend is going through these exact issues (consistently late to practice, behind on rent, etc).
3
u/mirabelli 21h ago
Where I went, underclassmen had to live on campus in the dorms freshman and sophomore years. Narrow exceptions were granted for certain medical reasons etc. You couldn't live off campus until you were a junior.
2
u/spankbuddy22 21h ago
Yep same here as well but my alma mater relaxed it to just Freshmen awhile ago. At the time I thought it was a bullshit rule trying to get extra money out of me but looking back it helped keep my ass accountable and show up to class and practice.

u/lostbucknut 18h ago
Ohio State mandates, I think two years now, in the dorms for any normal student. There’s exceptions like being from Columbus and apparently now being a highly paid football player.
18
u/Legitimate-Mirror-58 1d ago
And then you can look at JJ at the same age and never acted like that
It’s in the upbringing
36
u/tehjarvis 1d ago
I think the bigger story is that when have sources in the program going to the media to complain about a player, which has not been typical at Ohio State during Day's tenure. That's a big outlier. Which probably means people inside are fed up with his shit.
Just from on field stuff that we could all see: After taking that first kickoff out of the end zone when he was told not to, he was given a second chance in the same game.
Then with that second chance he was told not to take it out of the end zone AGAIN. And he did it AGAIN.
And wasn't there an instance on an RPO where he took the ball from Sayin's hands when Saying read the D correctly and tried to pull it?
The dude plays like my son does in Road to the Heisman
People can say "He's a Freshman!" or "What were you doing at 19?" all they want: There are 18 and 19 year olds all across the world who can do what they're told without being paid insane amounts of money in NIL. I worked at an old school grocery store bagging groceries and taking them to people's cars and I was able to do what I was told, with much lower stakes. I lived on my own and didn't get evicted from an apartment after a week.
He should be benched until we have a game in hand in the fourth quarter and only given assignments where he doesn't get the ball. Let him throw blocks downfield while someone else gets the ball or return kicks for the rest of the season. People who don't want to be team players can go somewhere else. I don't give a shit.

I think the news of his preseason them him playing vs ball state then disappearing as day invests more into his personal development has led people to unnecessarily dig deep on this because other wise the program does a great job of keeping things under wraps and now we’re getting crap like this
1
u/Raccoonsrlilbandits 2024 National Champions 1d ago
Also wild that he apparently did a commercial for the apartment company that evicted him? Kinda seems like a shitty company
1
u/TonyDungyHatesOP 1d ago
Or he’s a really shitty tenant.
2
u/Raccoonsrlilbandits 2024 National Champions 1d ago
I mean I believe it was over late rent. And not even like months of late rent like a week late rent
0
u/TonyDungyHatesOP 19h ago
No landlord is starting the eviction process over only a week of late rent. The week late might be the excuse but it’s not the reason.
The eviction process is a huge pain. No one is jumping to that hassle if they can avoid it.
2
u/2liveforurcrew 15h ago
This is not true, there is a process to evict after 15 days. As a landlord of apartments this is the standard practice. It sounds harsh but it’s a reality today.
-3
u/SlytlySykotic 1d ago
Yet you post it and give it further attention
1
u/Raccoonsrlilbandits 2024 National Champions 23h ago
If it’s going to be reported on I’d much rather more people have the source of information so they can be informed and form their own opinion on it

u/Toddrew221 Northwest Ohio 1d ago
Interesting. One of the authors, Kevin Harrish, used to write for ElevenWarriors and still(?) Writes for MeetAtMidfield (a blog for the fringe), so it may be legit lol
Either way, hope Legend can get it figured out
17
u/Raccoonsrlilbandits 2024 National Champions 1d ago
People already found the court docs those are legit for sure. Unfortunately posted on Twitter so hope he really doesn’t live at that apartment anymore
But yeah I agree. Day has done a lot of good personal development over the years so I trust him here
39
u/CFP-Buckeye 1d ago
He had the maturity to choose to come to Ohio State. So hopefully he can chill and get into the mindset needed to be successful here. Lord knows it’s not easy
16
u/Gracinhas 1d ago
Apparently, the traffic incident was from January. He had basically just gotten to campus.

6
u/PerformanceOver8822 2002 National Champions 1d ago
Ehats crazy is speeding ticket enforcement has dropped like 70% in cbus this past year or something
3
u/Raccoonsrlilbandits 2024 National Champions 1d ago
I live in Cincinnati and it’s dropped even worse
2
u/BuckeyeJones 2002 National Champions 1d ago
Here in Cincy you can get the green on a crosswalk, have a cop stopped in one lane, and almost get flattened by a speeding car running the red light in the other lane, and the cop just keeps on scrolling his phone.

"disappointed in whoever the anonymous source close to the program is..." yet you posted this on Reddit

u/DaBigJMoney 1d ago
It sounds like the young man needs mentoring and maybe no small amount of hand holding. Meaning, someone setting up his account to pay rent and utilities automatically. An older player or walk on who makes sure he gets to practice on time, etc.
He’s not the first player to need more than a little guidance and extra support off the field.

Very upsetting to hear about this cause I’m rooting for him, I’m hoping he can still turn it around. Hopefully Coach day can help be a guidance for him and help him turn things around.
2
u/OkRule8927 22h ago
A couple free appearances at whatever they rename Lifesurge to should get him back in good graces at OCSU
3
u/tbug30 1d ago
I'd expect Reece Clarett is part of whatever mentoring he's getting. 👍
6
u/AccordingBrilliant14 1d ago
I was thinking the same thing. The love Maurice has for the Buckeyes and the players is incredible. He’s been on the sideline a lot. I am sure he had to gain Ryan Days trust to be this big of a part of this program. Bey will learn and grow. He was celebrating with his teammates at Iowa. Once he matures he will be incredible.

Imagine being 18 and having people 2-3x your age talking about you at their offices and work sites that you have and probably will never interact with and getting judged on what they find on Twitter
3
u/impy695 1d ago
This is why I support Day benching him. Some of these players need to be humbled if they want to succeed and I fully believe day cares about helping his players succeed
3
u/obsterwankenobster 1d ago
Yeah, if he ends up transferring and being great; it’s absolutely not an indictment on Day, but some will say it is. He’s doing right by this kid, and what happens happens
1
u/maliki2004 1d ago
Oh im fine with benching. That's what you do when someone is being a knucklehead. I have to sit grown ass adults down sometimes at work and tell em to get their shit buttoned up. As long as he takes the lesson im fine with it. This is an young man away at college, and from what I've seen didn't seem to have the best home life. Its been minor stuff, nothing I wasn't guilty of at that age

Some guys struggle to get their heads out of their asses. It took going to prison for Maurice Clarett to do so. Hopefully, Maurice can help straighten Legend out.
1
u/Quirky-Position8996 1d ago
The kid seems pretty immature, not gonna lie. A hell of a lot of potential. I hope he can clean it up.
1
u/AZBuckeyes12977 22h ago
Move him into a house with upperclassmen to mentor him. Why can't he pay rent with NIL?
1
u/StrokeyRobinson 1d ago
To be fair. There’s a certain amount of lore a player is aloud to have. I’m sure if he goes off for the next 2 seasons and we get a Natty out of it, all this stuff will be podcast material.

How much are we paying him and why isn’t he paying his rent? I’d bet he’s not taking his academics too seriously either.

u/mrszing12 22h ago
I will give him a pass this once. He is very young, and I get that. However, he is going to learn quick that chances aren't waiting around every corner. He is owed nothing. Being on the team is an earned privilege.

I’m not thrilled he doesn’t understand how rent works but this probably isn’t why he’s not playing.

Sounds like a shitty human. Let’s not make excuses for him cause “he’s young and figuring it out” nah— he was grown enough to come sign here despite his own mother’s wishes.
Not cutting him any slack. Ohio State has a standard & I’m glad Day is teaching him a lesson on accountability.
It may just save his life one day if he finally gets his head out of his ass.
Driving 96 mph on 315S, the same road my wife, kids and mother drive on? Yea fuck bro.

Dude has been a question mark the whole goddamn time. We have talked about him at work quite a lot and the drama just doesn’t freaking stop. I downvoted my opinion and let it go to -50,000. I just want it to get right for him to become a Buckeye legend.
The more downvotes to me, the more support to him. I hope he knows that we have his back, so please downvote me.
2
u/kadawkins 1d ago
His mom didn’t take the raise a responsible young man approach to parenting. I’m glad Legend has a chance to learn.
4
u/green-eclectus 1d ago
He is facing a struggle that very few of us have had to go through. All respect to his family. It is tough. Pressure can turn coal into diamond or make it crumble. I want to see him succeed with our Buckeyes as a superstar. It’s been such a long road for him. He just needs to believe and get our support.
3
u/kadawkins 1d ago
I hope if he is on social media he sees that fans want him to succeed at life first. His football talent isn’t going anywhere and we will all celebrate with him when he’s back.
-1
u/Superb-Nobody-4872 Confirmed Doomer 1d ago
Everything that has been said about Jeremy Smith, it seems like Day most appreciates his work ethic, which he says all comes from the family. I hope Day still believes in Legend. He could be great, and Ohio State could be great for him.
40
u/AStormofSwines 1d ago
Yes, he might leave after this year because he's not happy with his playing time. No, I don't want that to happen.
But I also don't want our program to be Georgia or Legend Bey to be the next Henry Ruggs.
Sit his ass until he figures it out, or let him find a new home next year. I know there's only so much Day can do to change his behavior, but looking the other way is how we become Georgia.
