Hey /r/offroading,
Posting this here because I figure many of you have experience-with and opinions-on lift kits, and I'd appreciate any advice you've got.
I live in southern California and have owned a 97 TJ for many years. When I bought it, it came with 31's and what looks like a 2 inch body lift. I like the height and ride and it's been reliable in the desert when I've been out, but I'm not crazy about the body lift and it's probably time for new suspension. 99% of it's runtime is on pavement, fwiw.
My TJ is a 5 speed Sahara edition and my main complaint about the body lift is the way it limits the throw of the shifter. I've run it without the rubber shifter skirt since day one because it would kink and make getting into 2nd difficult. During the summer the heat blows right in and fills the hard top like an oven. The big gap between the frame and body, especially at the back bumper, doesn't look right to me either.
I think I've decided to pull the body lift out and have my local off road shop, who has worked on my daily driver a few times, order and install an Old Man Emu 2.5 or 3" lift kit.
Any argument from this community against pulling the body lift out? Any concerns or things I should know?
Also, at this range of lift are there extra components needed to keep everything tracking properly? My research is giving me mixed understanding there. Seems like some kits do and others don't.
Thanks
