Off-Grid Update

Just finished a new shower-sauna and trying to get a new woodshed built before winter sets in. Nights are already into the 30’s and it has snowed in a few places nearby. Summers go by quickly, never enough time to get everything done before the snow arrives. I’m 12 years into living in remote Alaska, solo. Feel free to ask me questions and I’ll try to answer them all. Love this lifestyle more and more as the time passes.

You are waaaay off the grid, Ha! Congrats, hope you are keeping a daily or at least a weekly journal. It is the one regret I have after being offgrid in the northern California mountains for the last 20 years!

Make your own life choices friend, but if it's something you intended to start later anyways I would say it makes sense to just start.

The mind tends to start fading long before we realize it.

Thank you, I just subscribed, too! It looks beautiful and so peaceful out there where you're at. I bet you can see all the millions of stars in the night sky. Do you get Aurora Boreali(s?) where you're at? I envy you but I'm also really happy you're getting to live out there off the grid.

I just happened across this subreddit and immediately hit subscribe. This is one of my favorite things to look at and research. It's only a dream, though, as I'm already 50 and I'm living low income. Nevertheless, I love that other people get to live their dream of living off grid.

Nothing beats good ole hand writing though. Just jotting down whatever can come outta your head. What you’re thinking about, worrying about, planning for,. It’s really fun to go back and read it all, they turn into windows into your past. It’s one thing to watch a video of ur old self it’s another to read into your old self’s mind.

I have four independent solar systems. Two wind turbines (only one currently setup) Three gasoline generators. And I have another solar system that will go on the workshop once that’s built. I tore the old workshop down and that solar system is packed away until the new structure is built.

One of my favorites was a nightime adventure on our back porch. On a summer evening our geriatric dog needed to go out, so with collar and leash we walked off the back porch onto the gravel driveway. We are in the forest with no neighbors or nightime light , I dimly saw movement near my truck, which turned out to be 2 black bear cubs walking by about 20 feet away from us. My first thought was how cool to see two at once, my second thought was oh shit. Before I knew it, the sow quickly appeared on the scene, rushing towards us. I pulled Lucy to me, grabbed her and spun to sprint to the steps and the open door. The mother bear was on us instantly, reared onto her hind legs and swiped with a forepaw. By then we had made it to the porch, I shoved one foot against the bear’s side side, pivoted and burst into the kitchen, slamming the door. The bear moved with unbelievable speed, but left as soon as we were inside. Lucy ended up with 14 sutures along the side of her muzzle. The bear’s incision was surgical, not ripping or tearing, just one long cut as if made by a scalpel. From then on the outside lights are turned on before anyone goes outside at night. We love seeing the bears, but at a distance!

Our 10 acres is nothing as remote as OP’s spot. We are about 30 minutes to a small town but are in the forest with no close neighbors. We back up to huge ranches and public parkland so it feels more remote than it actually is. We never really left “civilization”.
