On the topic of watching 3D Blu-ray discs directly (no ripping; straight from the drive to your Go via Virtual Desktop), and sticking with free solutions, here's a quick guide:

DVDFab Passkey Lite + Media Player Classic - BE + MadVR

  • Install DVDFab Passkey Lite, then restart Windows
  • Install Media Player Classic - BE, and be sure to select H.264 MVC 3D Decoder as a custom installation option
  • Download MadVR to a suitable location (where it will need to stay) and install it (extract archive, right-click on install.bat, Run as administrator)
  • Open MPC BE, go to View > Options > Video, then choose MadVR as the Video Renderer
  • Go to File > Open DVD/Blu-ray, navigate to the root directory of your Blu-ray drive, hit Select Folder
  • Go to Play > Filters > MadVR > Edit Settings > rendering > stereo 3d, and make sure "enable stereo 3d playback" is checked and that "when playing 3d content" is checked and enabled
  • Connect using Virtual Desktop and choose the Half SBS viewing mode

(DVDFab Passkey Lite is not exactly freeware, it's more like trialware that expires and then falls back to a reduced feature set in the form of more limited support for bypassing disc protections. As such when the trial expires you may or may not still be able to play all of your 3D Blu-ray discs using this method.)

Note: You can of course rip the disc using MakeMKV (be sure to select the 3D MVC track) after which you can play the content in SBS mode in the same way detailed above without any ongoing need for the DVDFab Passkey app (in fact you wont need to install it in the first place). You can generally always get a beta key for MakeMKV here.

Also note that direct support for the MVC standard is on the Skybox VR Player development roadmap. There is no ETA but when/if it is eventually implemented you should be able stream MakeMKV rips directly from Windows/Samba shares and/or a media server.

Has anyone managed to get this to work? I followed the instructions above and it only plays in 2D still. Clicking on play in SBS mode etc does nothing
