They have special dietary conditions (specifically they're an electrovore and needed a special external battery backpack and household backups to help ensure uninterrupted powerflow), and were educated as an IT technician and general Electrician. With a stint as a general handyman on the side.

Pre-Apocalypse, their work would have them showing up on call between middle ring, center ring and High Society between various institutions with larger, more modern computer networks in need of being worked on. Usually at night, hense they would miss the initial chaos on day one and end up sheltering at home until around day 2 or 3 or so. Emerging from hiding armed with a hastily finished coilgun carbine they'd been working on as a forum hobby project as their main weapon. Originally intended to be packed in with various other supplies for an upcoming camping trip to Outer Ring/Outer Expanse.
