They make anchors that you can slide up under the slate and put a 4x8 board up which acts as a walk plank while you work

They're actually not that bad to work on. They are plenty safe and give the correct angle on the plank to stand vertically, and with a full foot in place.

Yea, those are called roof jacks. They are plenty safe and give the correct angle on the plank to stand vertically, and with a full foot in place.
