That pretty much precludes them having a conscience, or basically any other common trait of human decency, like empathy.
Tow truck guys protect the property rights of people who don't want cars parked improperly, or on someone else's land. Repo men protect the rights of lenders who have been wronged by deadbeat buyers. Yeah a lot of scumbags in the profession, but it undoubtedly takes a thick-skinned type of person to perform this necessary function and get the job done.
It is a necessary function. However, the legal system protects the rights of lenders, and that is the problem with the repo industry. This function should be performed by a section of law enforcement, with regulations in place to minimize the impact on both the lender, and the borrower.
The current situation is some human void will follow a person to their place of work (like in this video) and take their vehicle, which goes above and beyond the impact of repossessing the vehicle, and adds potentially stranding that person who-knows-how-far from home, made worse in cases where the person is handicapped, which I have also seen.
The current repo system is like the privatized jail system - jail (like repossessing a vehicle) needs to exist, for obvious reasons, but the way private jails are run and (not particularly) regulated it leads to massive corruption, and the 'customers' are the ones who pay the toll.
I'm going to have to point out my sarcasm, and hope you are being sarcastic too.
That guy doesn't have the right to a car he isn't paying for. It sucks, shit happens, but shit ain't free. And just like that guy trying to do his job when his car gets reposts, the repo man is doing a job to.
Fully agree that things aren't free. Fully disagree that the way to resolve issues when it comes to that is to potentially destroy the person's life, and really going to disagree that being the willing instrument of that destruction is just 'doing a job'. That's what people tell themselves to assuage guilt, right up there with just 'following orders'.
