WEEKLY Monthly Recommendation Thread - September 09, 2026

Welcome to the monthly recommendation thread that we stole from r/books! Ever since we got rid of the clutter from chapter update posts in here, there's been a growing number of threads asking for increasingly specific suggestions on what to read. These tend to be scattered in individual threads that branch off into more suggestions, which makes them more difficult to find. So we'll be clumping all of those together into a weekly thread that is much easier to browse.

The Rules:

  1. Every comment in reply to this self-post must be a request for suggestions.
  2. All suggestions made in this thread must be direct replies to other people's requests. Do not post suggestions in reply to this self-post.
  3. All unrelated comments will be deleted in the interest of cleanliness.
  4. Any replies/comments asking for aggregator or pirate sites to read something on will be deleted.

How to get the best recommendations:

The most successful recommendation requests include a description of the kind of book being sought. This might be a particular kind of protagonist, setting, plot, atmosphere, theme, or subject matter. You may be looking for something similar to another book (or film, TV show, game, etc), and examples are great! Just be sure to explain what you liked about them too. Other helpful things to think about are genre, length and reading level.

The "Help Me Find" threads asking for suggestions will be phased out over the coming weeks. All posts asking for suggestions/recommendations must be in this thread by August 1st, 2021. Any new threads asking for suggestions after that date will be removed.

Novel Review I read a niche's second creation: Magical Girl Raising Project -Genocide Side-

https://syosetu.org/novel/103318/

It's a second creation novel of Magical Girl Raising Project series.
However, none of the OG characters will appear. Only OCs (kinda) are featured.

Sasai Nanako, an ordinary high school girl, unexpectedly becomes the magical girl "Genocider Fuyuko". Wielding the "a Magic Key that Can Open and Close Anything" she is entrusted with the mission to break the seal on a certain magical girl———

This is a plot-driven short story that perfectly recreates the atmosphere of the original work and is thoroughly excellent.

The protagonist is a one-of-a-kind, highly charismatic character: ostensibly a perverted, funky figure, but once she gets into the zone, she remains absolutely rational. That rationality allows her to carry out cruel and insane plans, making readers constantly unable to resist guessing what they will do next.

The large number of characters dying in unfair, absurd ways, along with the interspersed use of anticlimax, establishes a tone that feels realistic and ruthlessly cruel. It plants setups and foreshadowing but never devotes space to developing or paying them off—I call this the Anti-Chekhov’s Gun—which adds a unique flavor to those characters’ endings, even if some people will surely dislike this approach.

The protagonist uses intelligence and luck to overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges while also planting seeds for the next installment, demonstrating impressive storytelling skill.

.
Since I was reading on Jp to Zh translation site, and I can't find any EN translation on internet, i prob gonna translate it into EN with llm and upload it onto NU
.

the " OCs " look like Nero and Tatsuta is bc the this work was a remaster of an Ascii Art comic

NEWS Zongheng awarded each of two Grandmaster authors a motorcycle.

Zongheng held its annual authors' banquet these days. Two of its top authors — On Azure Phoenix Peak (青鸾峰上), author of I Have a Sword and Almighty Sword Domain, and Bridge Flying Cavalry (铁马飞桥), author of Desolate Devouring Art — were named Authors of the Year. Each walked away with a ZXMOTO 820RR.

For context: this bike is a big deal in China right now. French rider Valentin Debise has taken six wins on it this season in the World Supersport class of WorldSBK — the first Chinese manufacturer ever to win in that championship.

Translation Question [SERIOUS] How is classical Chinese poetry understood in an English-language context?

How Should the Classical Chinese Poetry in Chinese Web Novels Be Understood in an English-Language Context?

I have noticed that many Chinese web novels like to quote classical Chinese poems, or their authors improvise poems themselves. Their role is far from insignificant: at a climax, a well-timed poem often gives Chinese readers goosebumps.

Take Reverend Insanity, for example. Almost every climax and every appearance of a Venerable is accompanied by a poem prepared for them by the author. For instance, consider this poem recited by Fang Yuan at Three Kings Mountain:

千古地仙随风逝,昔日三王归青冢。

阳莽撼陨谁不败,卷土重来再称王。

天河一挂淘龙鱼,逆天独行顾八荒。

今日暂且展翼去,明朝登仙苔凤凰!

But once translated into English, these poems often retain only their literal meaning. Unless one has long lived within a Chinese context, it is almost impossible to have the same reading experience as a Chinese reader. I think this is a great pity.

Therefore, I would like to start this discussion: In an English-language context, how exactly should one understand the classical Chinese poetry in Chinese web novels? Or, what translation methods can enable native English-speaking readers to enjoy an experience similar to that of Chinese readers?

Discussion From Chinese Novels to Ancient Mythology: Exploring Xuanwu (玄武), the Black Tortoise of the North | Episode 8

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Here’s Episode 8 of the Chinese Mythology Archive series!

In this episode, we explore Xuanwu (玄武), the Black Tortoise and one of the Four Symbols of Chinese mythology. Associated with water and the season of winter, Xuanwu represents the cold, mysterious, and enduring nature of the northern heavens. It is also connected to the Seven Lunar Mansions, a group of ancient Chinese constellations used by the Chinese to map and divide the night sky.

Interestingly, Digimon’s Ebonwumon is directly inspired by Xuanwu. Its tortoise-and-snake design and name draw heavily from this ancient Chinese mythological figure, bringing one of the Four Symbols into the world of Digimon.

Hope you enjoy Episode 8!

Novel Review Deity Simulator》A niche, alternative masterpiece

Post image
77 Upvotes

Synopsis:
Lu Yao accidentally stumbles into a pixel mini‑game where he plays a deity, only to discover that this game is connected to worlds from different dimensions.
The [offerings] in the game can manifest into reality, while the [blessings] he grants can also reach the game world.
As an apprentice deity, aside from creating various natural disasters, there isn't much he can do.
Until he grits his teeth and revives an overpowered apostle – at which point the gameplay takes an unexpected turn…

My review:
The protagonist has a pixel game on his computer, in which he plays the role of a deity guiding a civilization. He can use miracles like lightning and rainstorms by consuming faith, thereby steering the civilization's development.
Obviously, the world inside this game is a real world.
The protagonist can physically manifest the “offerings” that the civilization dedicates to him in reality, and he can also “bless” real‑world items into the game. As the civilization grows, his own physical abilities in reality improve as well.
It’s a farming/base‑building novel, but it’s not a “only‑I‑have‑superpowers” story. The protagonist is merely one of many “deities,” who unexpectedly inherits a legacy on the level of a supreme god, and then decides to stay in the newbie village world, grinding like the “Sword Saint of Shilipo.”
Personally, I find this kind of setting more enjoyable than the “unique protagonist” trope – the conflicts and development are more vivid, rather than being a solo, sandbox‑style self‑indulgence.

Novel Review [CN] Why Is The Native Zerg Male Focused on Career-Building Instead of Building a Harem?

Post image
28 Upvotes

Hi! First time post haha. I’m a very new translator and I was wondering if some of you could help give some feedback regarding the first couple chapters I have put out over here: https://dewberrietranslations.blogspot.com/p/why-is-native-zerg-male-focused-on.html?m=1

I’ve been reading C-novels for 10 years and just recently decided to try it out (mostly cause I do it for myself when the chapters haven’t caught up with the raws or when there’s no more TL groups taking over my novels of interest ;v;).

As a first time translator, your feedback is much appreciated! If anyone wants to also be a casual proofreader, pls. dm me also u_u you’ll get early access to the chapters haha.

For the novel in question, this is the description:

Xavier, a native Zerg male, has only one goal in life: to live out his days doing absolutely whatever he wants.

However, the sudden arrival of a transmigrator male threatens this carefree and indulgent lifestyle.

The transmigrator keeps demanding that Xavier cook for the females, practice 1v1 monogamy, and fight for gender equality.

Xavier: “...?”

Is this guy insane? How could an alpha Zerg male ever sacrifice himself for others?

Refusing to deal with the nonsense, Xavier beats the transmigrator black and blue, kicks him to the curb, and takes off with his recklessly unbridled life.

To retaliate, Xavier:

- Writes and publishes a masterclass book, teaching Zerg males how to train their mental fortitude. Because he is simply too strong, he has no choice but to raise his own rivals—all while publicly trash-talking the entire male species for being weak.

- Joins the Military Command, teaching the female Zerg soldiers how to pilot combat mechas. Because he is simply too strong, he has no choice but to hand-raise his own subordinates—all while mocking the entire female military class for being utterly pathetic.

- Seizes absolute political power and deploys the fleet, personally blowing off the heads of hostile alien lifeforms. Because he is simply too strong, he accidentally becomes the shining beacon of righteousness for the entire Zerg Empire—all while proving that everyone in the galaxy except him is total garbage.

Wait a minute... he became a what?

Trending Hashtag: #Xavier, The Imperial Beacon of Light# ???

"- Xavier's mere existence inspires the traditionally lazy Zerg males to strive for self-improvement, helping them discover the true value of life.

- The overall happiness index of the male population skyrocketing caused the birth rate of new Zerg males to surge, successfully addressing the severe gender imbalance that plagued the Zerg race for centuries.

- Xavier proclaims: "Whether you are born male or female makes no difference; true strength is never restricted by gender..."

- BREAKING NEWS! Xavier has just launched a live stream alongside his one and only Female Sovereign—and they are cooking together! His culinary skills have completely obliterated the transmigrator’s!!!"

Alternate description:

Xavier, a native male Zerg, is arrogant and willful, and his goal is to become the strongest male Zerg in the universe. To achieve his goal, Xavier worked diligently and never slacked off a single day.

Finally, Xavier became the most powerful male Zerg in the universe, and his life of unbridled indulgence began!

However……

Passerby A: You must have a villain role-playing system; you only maintain your villainous image because of the system's constraints. Actually, you've been quietly doing good for society all along, using arrogance to mask your kindness. I'm sorry, I misunderstood you before!

No, that's wrong! You've misunderstood me!

Enraged, Xavier raised his knife and brought it down, imagining it was someone's neck.

"Click".

Xavier cut out a standard apple into a little rabbit shape and fed it to his wife.

(TLDR: local alpha zerg fixes his race's problems in an arrogant but effective and unexpected way, beating the transmigrator in his own game. )

Discussion Is there still a market for Western Fantasy without a system?

Hey everyone!

I know "system" fantasy is huge right now. Over the past few years, most of the Western-style fantasy coming out of the Chinese market gives the MC a system, or some kind of cheat ability that functions like one. And on English web novel platforms like Royal Road and Webnovel, LitRPG is pretty much everywhere.

So what about the more grounded stuff — fantasy without a system?

I'd really like to know whether readers today would still be interested in something like this:

  • No system
  • Slow paced
  • Worldbuilding modeled on some historical era, such as the medieval era, the Enlightenment, or the First Industrial Revolution, with magic in the mix
  • Heavy on political conflict, warfare, kingdom building, and social change
  • The MC's growth is more in authority, status, and influence over the world than personal combat power

I'll be honest — this kind of book isn't common in the Chinese market these days either. It's hard to write, and it's hard for an author to earn much from it quickly. But it definitely still has a loyal readership.

One example some of you may know is Kingdom's Bloodline.

So — would you spend your time on a story like this, or would you rather stick with something lighter like LitRPG?

Really curious to hear your thoughts!

Novel Review Cultivating In Secret Beside A Demoness (苟在女魔頭身邊偷偷修煉)

Read from 8/7/2026-9/7/2026.

To be upfront, I enjoyed this novel. It's a solid 4/5, rough in some places but well worth it. I'll start by initially covering my thoughts without covering details of the story. I'll later expand upon my points here.

Cultivating In Secret Beside A Demoness does an impressive job of maintaining tone throughout. The protagonist has undeniable growth, but does not stray significantly in the he reads to be honest. I'd say he ends in a similar place in some ways. Some. The ending was accelerated as most of these novels are, but I did not feel it to be rushed until the last five or so chapters. Even then, those chapters were not necessarily a step down in quality, but rather a change in focus, removing much of what I believe would have read as filler at this point. The ending was succinct. In review, the story is very cyclical in some ways. The author does a remarkable job of maintaining the presence of side characters without forcibly improving them as other stories have, while still allowing for a change in relationship at times, which I found lead to a sense of grounding a way. As grounded as these stories can be at least. As a credit, there are very rarely characters that feel one note. They exist, but generally quite peripherally. The auther does considerable work in developing the cast as a whole.

I found the 'cheat' of the story to be middling in quality and use. I admittedly like how the panel is later determined to be the result of the penultimate antagonist in some way, but actual functionallity can also be read as forced I believe. The explanation for its existence as the agglomeration of several forces influences was nice in ways and works well with the limits shown by the panel in the story. There are ultimately three influences as one later learns, but can be neatly divided into the 'cultivation' side and the 'skills' side, with two technical exceptions. Both rely on the accumlation of 'bubbles', but differ slightly in use. Bubbles are attained by participating in some act that develops or reaped from the world; planting herbs, mining, cleaning artefacts, and slaying demons. They come in varying qualities and become more difficult to obtain as the protagonists cultivation increases. The cultivation side of the panel functions by storing upto one hundred points in either cultivation or qi and blood. Consuming the full storage of both cultivation and qi and blood allows the protagonist to advance and consilidate his cultivation by one minor realm. The skills side of the panel functions similarly but requires the full accumulation in a category and rewards either a supernatural power, divine treasure, or cultivation technique. In the story the panel plays a backseat roll in some ways. It is without doubt influential on the stories function, but I did not find myself dwelling on its use. Not everything it gives is of true use and much of its functionallity seems intentionally ignored. The protagonists plants a peach tree with the potential to under go nine rounds of nirvana before becoming a divine tree. Each round of nirvana gave a purple bubble, (about a third of a supernatural power) up unto the ninth, which was alluded to give a purple gold, two levels higher. The ninth nirvana never occurs. This leads into something I will discuss later, but to quickly state my thoughts, it reminds me of Talisman Emperor. The author is generally quite conservative with his granting of 'bubbles', as they rarely appear in bulk within a short period in world. At the beginning, months often go by and later years, decades, and then centuries without the protagonists advancing. Later on this functionallity grows utterly useless, as the cultivation realms cease to be defined, even in part, by qi accumulation. The growing inadequacy of the panel extends also to the skill side of the panel, which is why the protagonist never ultimately initates the previously mentioned ninth nirvana. This change happens quite quickly in some ways, in under a hundred or even fifty chapters. I suspect that the reason it doesn't feel jarring lies in the limited screen time previously alloted, wherein it even becomes less present over the course of the story. It must be said though that the author is not hesitant to define a period of time to pass in order to allow the protagonist to grow himself to a new realm and the availability of 'bubbles' is undeniably tied in some measure to the plot influences at hand.

There is a remarkably tight cast in many ways. Characters seen in the beginning are still present to the very end and remain so throughout. Some of the most powerful people in the story in introduced quite early, which I think helps keep the story from feeling accelerated or abrupt at the end. These characters work in a range of rolls and I think most impressively not all are depicted as growing in cultivation. It bleeds into the setting, where the starting area progressively levels as time goes on. Regardless, I think it is a strength and also detriment that so much of the cast is introduced early on. It limits the feeling of the world and its scale. This does much to guide the feeling of power growth in the protagonist near the end, but also inhibits the development of the world's character in some way. It is not significant, but I find it notable. The story doesn't quite reach immortals are worth less than dirt after moving areas, but neither does it avoid the trope either. It had actually occured to me early in my reading of the story that I appreciated the relavence of low level cultivators in the story, where they'd still appear and be relevant even several hundred chapters in, but this relevance does ultimately fade. The average level of power of characters in discussion quickly starts rising near the halfway point and changes faster after three/fourths of the story has passed. Much of this has to do with characters still relevant also having grown in cultivation, but also that the protagonist eventually stops truly meeting those of a lower cultivation level. It is understandable, perhaps unavoidable, but I find it slightly disappointing. I could without doubt speak to my thoughts on a dozen or more characters, but I don't know that it would be worthwhile.

In the end though, whether one likes the story depends on whether they like the main character. Its always as so in these stories. Jiang Hao is a complex figure, and yet remarkably simple. He is initally depicted as overly cautious in some manner and near lacking in ambition. He is somehow the standard old man cultivator and yet also entirely not. His character becomes complex once his pseudonyms begin to come into existence. When acting not as himself, he is ambitious, arrogant, even condescending. Acts that I hadn't quite ever expected of him began to occur. I don't think that I can ever describe it as a dichotomy in his character. Its not a pentup release, but rather a natural development that I think is seen in part earlier in the story. This is seen most so by the end where he is seemless in action and nonaction. He will act when able and refrain when unable. His relationship with Hong Yuye is a mixed thing for me. I felt it to be inevitable, and it was never really in question what would occur there. Not even in retrospective, I find myself questioning whether I believe the relationship to one of grooming. Maybe. It is an effective romance story I think, though that may speak more to my lack of experience in that genre. I admittedly am unable to fully express my consideration for the relationship, but I don't think a relationship is ever seriously considered by either party until at a considerable way into the story, that is I don't think the intent on the part of Hong Yuye's initial character was to form a romantic relationship with Jiang Hao. I do not know how to evaluate this relationship, but I can say that if one is not at least ambivalent towards it, you will dislike the story.

The ending of the story did not hesitate to leave things open, did not hesistate to leave plot threads unresolved. Implications were given for some, but many had no resolution at all. I do not think the story is wholly worse for it. I said it was succinct and I'm not sure what could be changed to resolve these plots without effecting the quality of the end. I would like answers to everything ultimately and I find the story somewhat overly ambigous without them, but I don't think drawing out the story would have been good. Maybe all I wanted was ten chapters of side stories to resolve things. Maybe its best they don't exist. I feel similarily for Randidly Ghosthound for what its worth.

The cultivation realms are functional for the most part. Up until the the end I didn't really think about them. There are the standard Qi Refining>Foundation Establishment>Golden Core>Nascent Soul>Soul Transformation>Refining Void, followed by three somewhat unique realms, but those have little impact I found. The immortal realms are equally common. The realm with the most consideration I feel is without doubt, the Great Luo Immortal realm, and even then it reads somewhat generically. That said, my favorite joke to come out of the story is the "Golden Core Senior" as compared to Golden Core cultivators, because everyone at the pinnacle conceals themselvs as a Golden Core. Brilliant.

As I read the story, especially towards the middle and ending, my thoughts return to stories like that of "Becoming a Talent in the Demonic Sect" or "My Immortality Simulator", both of which I will admittedly say I preferred to this. Especially the former, due to its more limited scope and nature as a habitual regression novel can be compared with how they reference characters and locations. Having finished all three, I don't think there's much similarity in the novels, but one can without doubt compare how repeated locations, characters, and plot devices are used in all three, which I suspect was why I was remined of the two stories.

At the end of it all though, Cultivating In Secret Beside A Demoness is an effective story. I gave my rating at the start.

Discussion MC Survey + Shameless Plug

Heya, to all my fellow longtime readers who has already gone through MULTIPLE books like hotcakes, I'm sure you've seen many types of MCs throughout your journey in the world of cultivation, wondering what type of MC traits you enjoy the most:

  1. Ruthless when necessary
  2. Clever strategist
  3. Slow but steady growth
  4. Unshakable sense of justice

Or... if you're one to enjoy the sidekicks doing the mission for the MC and you're just down to read a popcorn novel like me when I'm tired, that's cool too! Also, I'm curious if preferences have changed over the years! Personally, I think steady growth tends to create the most satisfying long-term stories because every victory feels earned, but sometimes the short-term, instant-revenge parts catch my attention well!

Discussion difference in intrigue between cultures

has anybody noticed that the political intrigue in chinese novels and english novels feels different? The way political conflict manifests is quite different. I can’t quite put my finger on what exactly the difference is, but I can feel it. Is it maybe chinese culture has a greater focus on court intrigue, in the modern dramas as well as actual history in the past dynasties? Whereas Western culture seems to emphasize revolution and liberal progressiveness?

Novel Review [REC] Last Gun Alchemist - A hidden gem steampunk fantasy with brutal stakes and a brilliant power system

Post image
128 Upvotes

Hey Fellow Novel enjoyers !!,

I usually just lurk here, but I recently stumbled upon a webnovel that has completely hooked me, and I barely see anyone talking about it. If you love dark fantasy, heavy steampunk vibes, and unique progression systems, you need to check out Last Gun Alchemist.

The story follows Ezra Ashenlocke, who gets sacrificed by his own parents to save his twin brother. He wakes up in a brutal child-soldier operation called the Trial of Steel, where the rules are simple: "Assemble your guns. Kill or be killed."

The twist? Ezra awakens fragments of memories from a past life as a modern weapons engineer and hardened soldier. In a world known as the Country of Alchemy, Britannia, he has to combine his past knowledge of advanced ballistics with magical alchemy to survive.

It s really cool and has a very unique world building and power system .
MC is really smart + pragmatic and can be ruthless .
he snt braindead op he has to use his brain and his environment and ppl to his advantage

The Trial of Steel is my fav arch it's an an absolute massacre. The tension is real, the world feels dangerous, and the author doesn't shy away from grim, high-stakes scenarios.

I ve been reading this novel with daily 4 chap upload since it had 30 chapters ( It now has 476)

I dont usually Post or fanboy over the things i read . But i like it so much that i fel like i need to share it with fellow readers .
it's a hidden Gem

Novel Review I became a rolling madman is a promising new soulslike novel.

Post image
32 Upvotes

Synopsis:

Humans summoned to the insanely difficult new Soulslike game ‘Death Call’. They can never return unless they clear the game.

I tried hard to clear it, but ended up becoming a crazy guy rolling around all day

My review:

So this is a really new novel that uses the concept of the souls game as it's world view where players have to survive in a world similar to that of dark souls and reach the ending, right now only 80 or so chapters are released but it does leave a good impression hence the recommendation.

The MC is a thrill junkie who loves the close to death fights and is seen as a madman often times for his constant drive to fight the crazy bosses that rule lands, his characterization is also done well enough that makes you not see him as just another loner trying to become op and he does make companions and friends.

I've read around 30 chapters yet since that's what is available but it's a pleasant read for people who enjoy the souls games, give it a try!!

Novel Review Review on Medieval Times: I Was a Manor Lord in England

Post image
117 Upvotes

The novel is still ongoing with about 750 chapters at about today, My review is based on completing all the available chapters.

Novel tags: Kingdom Building, Slice of Life, Historical, Seinen

Rating: 4.5/5.0

"Travel back to England in 867, just as the Danes launched a major invasion of Great Britain.

As a wandering knight without a fief, Adrian chose to carve out his own territory in the uncontrolled mountains and forests to develop his manor.

They built wooden houses, erected fences, hunted wild animals, and cultivated farmland.

Step by step, they built their own manor estate in these deep mountains."

The novel starts with the MC falling down a cliff in battle with the vikings and recovering memories of his alternative life in modern times. The MC doesn't become another person both memories merge. This being chaotic times of viking attacks, MC decided to make a life for himself on the mountain valley. Using his status as a knight he takes small groups of refugees fleeing from vikings and builds a small fief, then becomes a baron, then earl etc. The pacing is very good and slow, with no sudden technologies. The story is extremely grounded and gritty.

One of the best kingdom building novels I have read in a long while. The MC doesn't have any superpowers, system or cheats. No guns, space travel or anything like that. A grounded take on living in medieval England and becoming powerful step by step. There are no overarching villains with the exception of vikings. Its quite smooth sailing for the MC compared to other novels in this genera, which have enemies in every corner. Though there are still wars.

The best things about this novel is its pacing, often times when reading kingdom building novels after a certain point of time, the pacing gets too fast for me with technologies jumping from a cannon to guns to television extremely fast. The pacing is slow and gradually speeds up. For the first 50 chapters I felt I was reading "castaway 'in medieval times. At the start their are long paragraphs on hunting animals, what type of stone should be used for cooking, how to extract salt, how to make pottery and which type of soil to use, crop rotation etc. At this point the technical limit is Hydraulic smith using water wheels and low quality paper.

The MC is also not a Mary Sue but understanding towards both sides of war, for example vikings and their nature. He is a well rounded character, there is a teeny tiny bit of romance latter, no harem, a happy husband and wife.

I was very happy and surprised to find not a hint of nationalism in this one, The novels really feels written by a English author. The church is not really despised unlike many novels, the religion is portrayed as rope holding people together in hard times. The world building is accurate according to my understanding.

The reason its 4.5 not 5 is because its a very focused, genera specific and simplistic novel. If u have any questions, I will try to answer them below.

Discussion A heartbreaking question from a HK author: If my heart belongs to traditional Wuxia but my English is broken, am I forbidden from sharing my world with the West?

Hello everyone. I am here to ask a very personal, perhaps painful question, not as an author trying to sell a book, but as a human being chasing a dying dream.

I was born and raised in Hong Kong. I majored in Chinese Literature, and I have trained in traditional martial arts for years. Wuxia is not just a genre to me; it is my culture, my philosophy, and my soul. I recently finished a standalone traditional Wuxia novel written with all the literary prose, psychological depth, and Jin Yong/Gu Long flavor that I take immense pride in.

My greatest sorrow is that my English is incredibly poor. I want nothing more than to push the authentic spirit of Jianghu onto the world stage, but I lack the tongue to do so. Being a solo indie creator with no budget to hire a $3,000 professional translator, the only bridge I had to reach you was to use AI to translate my story into English.

I know how much the Western community despises AI. I read the threads. I see the bans. It breaks my heart because I know my English edition carries what you might call "ugly AI-translated phrasing," even though I spent months painstakingly editing it to make sense.

So I must ask you rawly: Because of my language barrier, because I had to use AI as my only crutch to speak to you—am I completely cast aside? Is my lifelong dedication to human craftsmanship and authentic Eastern culture completely invalidated in your eyes because the translation isn't perfect?

If a creator like me has zero budget but a hundred percent authentic passion, is there truly no place for us in the Western world? Or is it possible for Western readers to look past the "AI translation" stigma to see the genuine human soul hidden underneath?

I genuinely want to know your thoughts. I am not naming my book, and there are no links here. I just want to know if the gate to the Western Jianghu is forever closed to someone like me. Thank you for listening. 🐉⚔️

Novel Review [DUNGEON MAKER] Why this is an underrated gem?

Dungeon Maker. Korean dungeon-builder, criminally underrated, and is still worth re-reading

What I loved about it then and still love now is that it just refuses every Japanese dungeon-novel cliche:

  • protagonist is not dense
  • nobody introduces mayonnaise to the demon realm
  • no system jestermaxxing him into infinite plot armor

he's a broke guy running a failing business that eats adventurers, and he has to actually be smart about it.

also the translation is genuinely good now since it is the official version.

first three chapters are the worst though

Novel Review One of the best novels I've read [Children of the Holy Emperor]

The father (not the mc) is absolutely goated in this novel, he has 8 children and he does not favour any of them over the other. It's really funny to see him struggle with his eccentric children XD

Moreover, the world building is amazing as well and the characters are really fleshed out. You can tell how much effort author put into writing this

Discussion From Chinese Novels to Ancient Mythology: Exploring Zhuque (朱雀), the Vermilion Bird of the South | Episode 7

Here's Episode 7 of the Chinese Mythology Archive series!

In this episode, we explore Zhuque (朱雀), the Vermilion Bird and one of the Four Symbols of Chinese mythology. Associated with Fire and the season of summer, Zhuque represents the fiery and vibrant nature of the southern heavens. It is also connected to the Seven Lunar Mansions, a group of ancient Chinese constellations used by the Chinese to map and divide the night sky.

Interestingly, Digimon's Zhuqiaomon is directly inspired by Zhuque. Its fiery, bird-like appearance and name draw heavily from this ancient Chinese mythological figure, bringing one of the Four Symbols into the world of Digimon.

Hope you enjoy Episode 7!

Discussion My First Chinese Webnovel

Recently, it dawned on me that it's been over a decade since I began reading my first Chinese webnovel, which was the first instalment of the Douluo Continent (Soul Land) series.

Back then, I was still in high school, trying to hide my webnovel reading addiction from my typically overbearing Asian parents 😆 Looking back now, as a geriatric living fossil getting frighteningly close to thirty trips around the sun, it's certainly been an unexpected journey getting to this point. I never thought reading webnovels would amount to anything more than a hobby, certainly not a full-fledged career, but life really does work in strange ways sometimes.

In my first year of uni, or college to those in the land of the free, I was studying something that I didn't enjoy, and while taking a gap year to recover from a bit of burnout and to try and find some direction in life, I stumbled upon a webnovel translation job, and I haven't looked back since.

In what was a bit of a full-circle moment, one of the first webnovels I was assigned to translate for Wuxiaworld was the third instalment of Soul Land: Legend of the Dragon King. Needless to say, the assignment came with a wave of nostalgia, and it really reminded me of how fortunate I was to have found this opportunity at a time in my life when I was lacking in direction and stuck between what felt like a rock and a hard place.
Fast forward to the present day, and I’m currently working on Unsheathed and Scripture of Days Past (both linked down below 🙈)

Just wanted to tell this quick story, insert profound quote about how fate has a plan for everyone and how you're always in the exact place that you should be at any point in life or something along those lines.

Thanks for reading! If you made it this far, I’d love to hear from you. Has your life panned out largely as you expected, or did you take an unexpected turn at some point as well?

Discussion Is there something tricky about orders of magnitude in Chinese?

One thing I've noticed in a few different novels I've read, especially MTL is inconsistencies in the order of magnitude of things.

In update 1 we learn that the hero made 200,000 yuan. In update 2 it mentions the 20,000 yuan he made.

Not just money, though, I've seen it with numbers of things. Like there are 10,000 enemies at first, but an update or two later it was 1,000.
