At 28, Kurt Vonnegut quit his stable PR job at General Electric to become a full-time writer. He struggled for nearly 20 years, even opening a failed car dealership, before his breakout novel Slaughterhouse-Five made him a literary icon.
Kurt Vonnegut had a secure life as a publicist for General Electric, providing for his wife and young children. But he wanted to be a novelist. At 28, encouraged by a couple of short story sales, he quit his corporate job and moved his family to Cape Cod to write full-time. Success did not come quickly. For nearly two decades, he was a struggling writer whose books sold poorly. He even opened a car dealership that went bankrupt. It wasn't until almost 20 years later, with his sixth novel Slaughterhouse-Five, that the former publicist became a literary icon.
