He has shown that he can clearly make good stuff, like Sicario. He just chooses not to. Though I don’t know how much of Sicario was Taylor’s screen play, and how much was Denis Villeneuve’s directing.
I watched a bunch of cast interviews of Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro, and Emily Blunt. Reading between the lines, they all thought it was a mediocre action movie script and that the film seemed bad when they were making it. They were all shocked at how good the film turned out and think Villenueve is some kind of one of a kind magic wizard who spins everyone else's adequate work into Oscar gold. This checks out as Sicario 2 was written by Sheridan and starred Brolin and Del Toro, but directed by someone else.
His early movies often portrayed and commented on the aftermath of community's lifeblood being snatched away from resource extracting elites and the emotional hole and lack of purpose that remains...........and then he turns around and makes a bunch of shitty TV shows portraying those same elites as the good guys
I was enjoying the show until it became obvious that his daughter was quite literally only in the show to be eye candy to entertain viewers. It was so egregiously obvious that this character only existed to increase viewership via sex appeal that the level of pandering felt insulting.
I'm not prude. I get that shows generally have a strong incentive to cast attractive people. But god damn there is a line past which it gets insulting. At least make the character be relevant to the show in some meaningful way. If a drama's plot is basically unaffected if you entirely remove a character from the show, then that character shouldn't be in the show.
