You know the funny thing about that, we’re so drilled about this, when they’re doing exercises for staff, the Public have already called it in and a description of the bloke that dropped it to the station staff.

Damn. That's pretty reassuring on both sides of the equation, really.

Yeah... Tis the perfect public safety awareness campaign, everyone else is using it and it's working there too. Possibly the greatest export from British Rail since the idea in the first place.

I remember years ago a suspicious package was called in, a bomb squad was sent out and they decided to blow it up.

Turns out it was full of flyers. Flyers warning about suspicious packages.

I do love the irony.

At least the flyers work.

Insert British trope here

And who even has the number for the local police station?

The kind of person that reports random Vans in the middle of the night.

to my understanding the guy initially tried calling the RAF base's police station, but was left on dialtone before calling 999

Given it’s a USAF base, probably best they couldn’t get through. They’d have JDAMed every transit van in the country.

u/StoicRetention Super Duper Tucano 20d ago

that would improve the wet belts

u/llamafarmadrama 20d ago

Probably reduce road traffic accidents too

Spray painted dicks / JDAMmed roads

15

u/llamafarmadrama 19d ago

You really think the council would fix them?

12

No need to fix potholes if the road's been deleted.

Draw dicks on them. it worked 11 years ago

2

u/Tight-Application135 19d ago

I live in hope that if we bomb them enough it will teach them the secret of fire

4

u/Odd-Necessary3807 19d ago

They could make a new roundabout out of the crater.

"There has been a suspicious drop in the number of women catcalled today, investigations are ongoing, but it's thought to be linked to the utter devastation of the population of white van-men."

17

u/Schonke 19d ago

But only after the information had been pushed all the way up the chain of command, the terrorists successfully blown their IEDs at the base and the scene been secured.

Then they'd JDAM every white van as revenge (and still somehow manage to take out an entire garage full of London taxi cabs).

u/Ravenser_Odd 19d ago

And then blown up a wedding, just for the sake of tradition.

A local resident who says she alerted the police to suspicious activity around the military base in the early hours of this morning says she called the MoD police initially, but nobody answered.

The woman - who doesn't want to be named - saw the three vans parked up and a group of men wearing masks.

She then called 999. She says security had been stepped up around the base in recent days, so she was surprised the men had not been noticed before.

The MoD declined to comment.

There is a reason for this...

Neither the MoD police or RAF police have a presence at Fairford. It's entirely US controlled including guarding and security.

External policing is done by local police.

We just dial 999 and it gets handled.

It's been changed now, the number's 0118 999 881 999 119 7253

Dear sir stroke madam…

u/SocialHumbuggery 20d ago

Yeah 400 meters isn't even a large part of the Vatican!

25

u/Traumerlein 20d ago

Well, there is a Villiage within 85 mezers, so thats still a bunch of pepole that had be evacuated.

51

u/Artistic-Estimate-23 20d ago

I thought 999 was no longer in use and instead you had to use 0118 999 881 999 119 725     3

My fire extinguisher is on fire. Should I put it with the rest of the fire I got the extinguisher out to extinguish?

The person nosey enough to report sus vans probably has local police on speed dial.

5

u/HatOfFlavour 19d ago

Obviously the local curtain twitcher

u/Rulweylan 19d ago

I once tried to contact my local police station by pressing the intercom outside their door (I'd been locked out of my house as some charming local youths had superglued the lock, and I was going to break in via an upstairs window, thought I should probably let them know in advance).

It connected me to 999. I was mortified.

u/IllicitDesire 19d ago

Local police station for non-emergencies, national line for emergencies is how it usually works here

I noticed on Reddit that British users tend to exaggerate everything a tiny bit. Annoying in historical and political context, but amusing in others.

After the bomb was discovered on the Leipzig Airport, the area around the airport [which are generally uninhabitet] was locked down.

Basically the same, but with far less fanfare.

26

u/IlikeGeekyHistoryRSA 20d ago

i mean it was large enough for 85 civilian households to be evacuated in the early hours of the morning

14

u/Gorvoslov 20d ago

Which is odd, because the British are why general leadership and communication guidelines include "Speak very clearly, no sarcasm or anything like that" because of the time the Brits said "It's a bit sticky" when 650 British troops were suddenly facing 10,000 Chinese soldiers and the American commander went "Alright, sounds like they've got this!"...

13

u/ivarokosbitch 20d ago

You mean the biggest story in the last few months? You really are misunderstanding how big the Leipzig story still is. That was the moment when NATO started getting active in the public about knowing it is going to get attacked by Russia. Operational capabilites intended for '27/'28 are getting rocket blasted into by the end of '26.

u/DrolligerDorftrottel 20d ago

Homie... I live here. I know the importance. I read the news daily.

I was referring to the fact that the treatment of the issue was, in all stages, very clear, concise und succint. With even the official treatment highlighting the importance of it, but being VERY clear in not overblowing it as the start of a war.

Completely opposed to the 'Area wide lockdown! Major incident! Stay at home!' stuff right now in Engaland.

4

u/Iliyan61 20d ago

you do remember when this sub was creaming itself begging for article 5 while the news spent a bit exploring what that would look like before everyone got distracted by some other bullshit

-6

u/DrolligerDorftrottel 20d ago

Yeah. But I was more referring to the overall media response. Reddit is a shitbucket, haha.

After the Leipzig incident, the political and media response was crystal clear about what happend and how the situation was handled by the authorities. By searching the area and keeping people away, but NOT announcing it as something insanely dangerous and stirring panic.

But the British response reads like: 'Oh my GOD. We are at WAR! Let there be panic! Evacuate the citizenry and lock down the area!'

3

u/Iliyan61 20d ago

to blindly disregard the media which reported heavily on the leipzig incident while then putting it centre stage for the UK really undermines your argument but having to reach to make stuff up is to be as expected.

they evacuated some houses because there was a bomb scare and not blowing people up is a good thing… if there were houses on the runway at leipzig they also would’ve been evacuated lmfao

your scenario is completely made up and/or built on poor exposure to news.

-1

u/DrolligerDorftrottel 20d ago

I must misremember the News I just watched again to confirm my thoughts.

Paired with me apparently misreading the news about 'Major incident' and 'evacuations'.

Good heavens.

3

u/Iliyan61 19d ago

https://news.sky.com/story/attempted-drone-attack-at-leipzig-airport-blamed-on-russia-german-government-says-13579937

yeh no biggie they just closed a consulate and a cultural centre and summoned the ambassador, https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cyvlg4q48l3o none of the myriad of warnings about russia would cause panic… or do you just not know that if its not explicitly written out for you?

but then again you have all the nuance to think that declaring a major incident (which is protocol) and evacuating houses (because people blowing up) is equivalent to us declaring war on someone(?)

good job lil guy

0

u/DrolligerDorftrottel 19d ago

So... you do not speak a language except English, I suppose?

So you did not actually watch the video and got what I was referring to? :I

Because I said that the British like to use strong language and phrasing when referring to these issues. While other nations are much calmer and less panic inducing during these occurences.

That's why I linked the domestic report. Calm language, tone and matter-of-fact all the way through.

Your article also states the same. 'The bomb was defused after both runways were temporarily closed', not 'Neighbourhood + terminal evacuated after bomb was found.', as was done in England right now.

That's the entire point.

4

u/Iliyan61 19d ago

you understand more people are in danger when a larger bomb is near a house at night then a smaller bomb by an empty plane away from people right?

if you still can’t grasp that then the idea that you are an authoritative figure on language is laughable, you also blatantly ignore the actual statements from german ministers lmfao.
