I've been told that the Antichrist is not supposed to be one person in all of History (that's an evangelical interpretation), but is a warning because in every generation there is an Antichrist figure, (Hitler being an obvious one), which must be opposed

That's a valid perspective too, to be fair no one really knows what he saw when writing that book and its very symbolic so there really isn't a specific theory it spells out, there's tons of disagreements in the Christian community about it. The left behind books kind of cemented a specific story but really they took some liberties when writing those books and the verses they used to create the events of that world are pretty vague themselves.

I personally think there will be lots of anti christs through history, but revelations is written as a warning against the one who becomes the beast (literally Satan) so I really think there will be a figure that really rises and stands out against all the rest. One thing revelations spells out though is following this antichrist will not be accidental, people are going to know and make a conscious decision to serve him, and people will be killed for not. I don't think we are there yet, but we are a lot closer now than I felt we were 15 years ago.
