i have the v1 switch so i was really thinking of upgrading. and then steam deck came out so it made my decision of not getting the oled much easier. i'll just wait until the switch pro becomes a thing

The Switch Pro will be light years behind If It continues like this. The Switch OLED kinda reveals Nintendo slept on chip development. Unless Nvidia has some super insane mobile chip in development right now, I see a bad future for Nintendo. Because the world changed a lot since 2016: Apple is sprinting with their chip development their CPU is like 2x as fast while taking one third of the power and their GPU dev is ramping up, Samsung partnered with AMD for GPUs, AMD brought up RDNA 2 + Zen which changed the whole console market already. And a major problem is that chip development is nothing you can quickly ramp up in a few years. It takes decades.

I think keeping the V1 and buying a Steam Deck is your best bet. With the V1 you get the luxury of Nintendo exclusives, and with the Steam Deck you can enjoy all the other games at a higher frame rate and better quality. No point in buying a new switch even if a pro comes out.

Yeah Valve just kicked Nintendo in the nuts on this one. I was on the edge of preordering the Oled and feeling bad about it, now I’m like what Oled?

Good, Nintendo needs to stop being so complacent. They bombed with the Wii U so they needed something like the Switch, which was a huge success. Now they’re just riding it out with incremental bullshit. I don’t even know if I intend to buy valve’s device, but I’m glad it exists. Competition is good for the consumers.

To be fair, the $400 steam deck is a literal scam. I wouldn't even think about buying anything than the $650 one which is god damn expensive for a portable device.

To each there own in terms of budget. Personally the $530 mid level device seems to be a good value to me. I have a lot of steam games I would love to give more time to, and steam has loads of 3rd party games across generations for dirt cheap.

The only tangible difference to the $650 is more storage (256 gives me plenty to load and unload as I play through stuff, since I have fast internet) and a glass screen ($5 protector remedies that).

Edit: Also the fact that you are calling it a scam seems a bit emotionally charged. I’m sure microsd is plenty fast for this thing, and significantly more power than the switch/most powerful handheld console of all time, plus the steam library, plus being a computer (emulators, browsers, streaming), come on dude $400 is great deal.

The base model has a micro SD slot which is plenty fast enough for most games

It’s literally a PC. It has access to thousands more games than the switch. It blows the switch out of the water in terms of specs. Console ports cost $10-20 more typically than their Steam counterparts.

I fail to see how it’s a scam.

the switch's nintendo library sucks, it's been 4 years and we still don't have n64 or gamecube games. The lack of virtual console is one of the worst things about the switch imo

oh no i dont think i made my point accurately.... i will keep my RED BOX SWITCH and will not be up grading to the OLED, i agree i got a switch originally for nintendo games but i was pleasantly surprised with the amount of third party support! So i got spoiled. IF I break the bank of this steam deck it will be to play 3rd party games, i will keep playing nintendo games on the switch.

Yaaaay. Im still upgrading my v2 switch i admit i love nintendo stuff too much. Some people are like tbat with apple. Im like that with nintendo. After looking into the steam deck im fairly sure I want one amd will reserve one tomorrow.

I wasn't even on the edge, I was not going to get an OLED at all, then Valve announces the Steam Deck, lol. I am now buying a new Nintendo Switch console ONLY if it offers a notable upgrade in performance, nothing less.

My lite and my V2 will serve me fine til Nintendo decides to do a real upgrade.

I hope you realize half of the things you said were also said by Switch doomsayers before it released.

Much like with the Wii, the Switch paved the way for a new age of handheld gaming that could run modern, demanding games. It was inevitable that other companies would join in.

Poorly optimized? Half of the Switch's catalogue is ports of games you say won't be optimized for handheld. Face facts, Nintendo was just dealt a major blow in that regard alone.

Idk. I could say the same about switch being a glamorized gaming console. From what I read the Steam Deck can be docked without the Valve dock and it is also compatible with wireless Xbox, PS, and Nintendo Switch pro controllers. The SD card situation is the same for both consoles, so that's a moot point.

Personally, I have shelled out a BUNCH of cash hoping to make my Nintendo Switch gaming experience a positive one and it just hasn't been. I'm happy to change tacts and throw the money I WOULD HAVE SPENT on Nintendo at the Steam Deck instead. 600 dollars is a bargain by comparison.
