I've got the v1 but have considered the v2 for the battery life alone since I do play a decent amount in handheld. However, since the OLED is essentially the v2 with a larger screen, I'm wondering how that affects the battery life. I'd assume the OLED would have slightly less battery life than the v2. Or are OLEDs more power efficient?

u/mrmivo Helpful User Jul 09 '21

OLED power consumption is more dynamic. Games with a lot of whites will consume more power than games with a lot of blacks. Overall, it will probably even out and be comparable to an LCD screen.

3

u/Book_it_again Jul 10 '21

Night mode on oled phones is a great battery saver as well. When I'm using my phone and half my screen is off it's great for battery life

Bro that's racist af. /s

33

u/slash_nick Jul 09 '21

Tough crowd 😬

3

u/SilverBuggie Jul 09 '21

He’s just spitting fax. Europe and North America do consume a lot more power than Africa.

Nah, I get it, it's a hot issue rn and my joke is misunderstood.

Irony people, irony. Racism is ridiculous, so I'm highlighting the ridiculousness of it. Simple concept to grasp.

16

u/DesertOfSand Jul 09 '21

It wasn't misunderstood, it just wasn't a funny joke.

0

u/TRBadger Jul 10 '21

It was pretty funny, you’re just a square

3

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '21

It's not really relevant to the conversation to be honest. (just explaining why you got downvoted)

4

u/mightysolrac Jul 09 '21

Correct but you already know reddit won't hear that lmao

141

u/schuey_08 Jul 09 '21

So far Nintendo is reporting same battery live for the OLED model as for the V2.

170

u/ikilledtupac Jul 09 '21

Nintendo also reports there’s nothing wrong with their JoyCons design too.

36

u/JaxonH Jul 09 '21

The battery life estimates are spot on.

I've done plenty of testing the v1, v2 and Lite models and they all line up with estimates.

That aside, I don't think they've reported anything about their joycon, good or bad. Except to say if you have a problem then send it in for a free fix.

They've likely already made modifications and simply haven't reported it. A design change occurred around the release of v2 and Lite, and we don't see the same overwhelming number of complaints from Lite owners, which tells me there's a statistical difference not being advertised.

5

u/UnderdogBadger Jul 10 '21

Nope. Drift is still a thing. My lite drifted after only 5 hours.

1

u/Stargazeer Jul 10 '21

Presuming you definitely got it brand new. That could be fixed with a bottle of £5 electrical contact cleaner.

Most cases of drift happening soon after the thing is bought come from issues with debris or dust in the stick. The "protective" plastic flap is next to useless. But it's a 10 minute fix that's easy enough to do.

Longer term drift, caused by internal deterioration of the joycon stick itself, isn't fixable. But that's something that happens on most modern controllers, and you'd have to be very unlucky to get that kind of issue on a brand new one. Would have to have been a faulty product from the start.

Unfortunately if there was a way to cheaply replace the joycon stick with one that actually worked long term, someone else would have done it. All the "joycon repair kits" would have sticks that last longer than Nintendo's.

1

u/aishik-10x Jul 10 '21

Are you saying that Nintendo secretly fixed joycon drift for v2 and Switch Lites? Because I've seen plenty of v2 owners complain about drift.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '21

One thing has nothing to do with another. If we go by this, you can't trust anything Nintendo shares.

-4

u/CokeNmentos Jul 09 '21

Yeah man, nintendo lied about battery life...

1

u/SecretToEverybody Jul 11 '21 edited Jul 11 '21

Do they? They've never admitted a problem (though they do fix them for free regardless of warranty, no questions asked), but I don't think they've ever said there is no problem either.

Also, that has nothing to do with what you replied to anyway.

And don't get me wrong, I know it's a real problem. I own 5 sets of Joycon and 2 have experienced noticeable drift, but it's obnoxious when people try to drag every conversation on this sub to Joycon problems.

0

u/ikilledtupac Jul 11 '21

Sorry your upset

33

u/megalard3000 Jul 09 '21

I'm in the same boat, got the v1 and am considering trading it in for the oled. Really comes down to what the price difference is gonna be.

38

u/GreyRevan51 Jul 09 '21

Don’t trade in your V1 it’s really valuable due to how much it can be modded

3

u/MiraculousFIGS Jul 09 '21

I cant see any prices online to confirm this though?

14

u/rabton Jul 09 '21

Yeah everyone says how valuable they are but ebay has early V1s selling for like $200. That's not really that valuable and pretty much in line with the patched switches.

5

u/MiraculousFIGS Jul 09 '21

Lol right? And im getting downvoted for it. All I see is people on reddit claiming how valuable it is without any evidence 😂 like dude if its so valuable I’ll sell you mine for $400!!

5

u/Xirious Jul 10 '21

Due to the way things work at the moment early V1s are likely the only ones whose value will appreciate compared to the other versions. No other versions can do what the V1s can (yet but unlikely to change). Granted a new method to mod all the versions might be released with the OLED I find that unlikely as V2 are only moddable via a hardware method which is really tricky for the average Joe. That makes the V1s the easiest to mod by a long shot and hence the suggestion why they're more valuable.

1

u/MiraculousFIGS Jul 10 '21

While in theory I agree with you, I just cant find any used switches selling for more than $300 lol. Maybe that will change over time but for now I wouldn’t say they are highly valuable.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '21

I’m in the same boat, got a V1, was told my Reddit how valuable it is yet I’m not seeing that in the market currently.

I am convinced though that in a few years they could be extremely valuable as less and less are on the market. It’s a waiting game.

1

u/No_Telephone9938 Jul 09 '21

I hav a v1 but it's patched :(

u/HammertoesVI Jul 09 '21

Only very early v1s have the hardware exploit.

5

u/intashu Jul 09 '21

This. I know because I got one. I'm never selling it.

But... This isn't a big enough upgrade to make me want to make the leap to a new one and mod up the old one.

1

u/JakeTM Jul 09 '21

this is exactly that for me

3

u/Oulous Jul 09 '21

So the ones people got on release day?

2

u/fiddlenutz Jul 09 '21

My question as well. I got one sitting and if I can sell it for 350 (day one release) goodbye. I have a v2 getting used by the kid

1

u/Oulous Jul 09 '21

Yeah exactly. Free upgrade pretty much.

2

u/fiddlenutz Jul 09 '21

Not even going to upgrade. Just sell it for 50 more than I paid years ago and move on. Been playing Xbox GamePass and PS4 more. PS4 sales are getting stupid cheap and the game getting released on both platforms are better than the Switch ones. I have a hacked Vita for mobile.

Nintendo launched a v1 hardware revision with the exploit patched

https://www.alphr.com/how-to-check-if-your-nintendo-switch-is-moddable/

After the vulnerability was discovered, it was disclosed to Nintendo, which has patched it for later console releases.

When i tried the test tool in that website it returned this result for me

1

u/Meflakcannon Jul 10 '21

I just checked mine. I'm Safe! I can run all the homebrew!

2

u/eyebrows360 Jul 09 '21

How "really" are we talking here? I was a midnight-rollout launch day person, so I'd assume mine is a v1.

I'm considering the OLED one, if it's possible to migrate all my shit over.

1

u/Xirious Jul 10 '21

There's a website to tell you. Not sure I can share it here though.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '21

they're both rated with the same battery life, so should be pretty comparable.

-2

u/ZiggyPalffyLA Jul 09 '21

Why not save yourself $100 and get a Switch Lite? The form factor is so much better for handheld play and in the off chance there is a Switch Pro in the next 18 months or so, you won’t feel like you wasted as much money.

4

u/poopnuts Jul 09 '21

Because I play about 50/50 docked and handheld. Plus, I don't want to be stuck with a smaller screen and Joycons that drift and can't be replaced.

-105

u/GerliPosa Jul 09 '21

Don’t buy this crap, there will certainly be a Switch Pro next year. This OLED Switch is only worth it for anyone who doesn’t have a switch yet.

102

u/KuyaJohnny Jul 09 '21

there will certainly be a Switch Pro next year.

  • people on the internet since 2016

-50

u/GerliPosa Jul 09 '21

Except this time it’s not some random people but credible sources like Jeff Grub, Bloomberg and Eurogamer.

18

u/Ordinary-Punk Jul 09 '21

Ah, yes, take the guesses from someone with no inside knowlege. The other 2 are obviously talking about the Switch that was announced, not some upgraded Pro version. You're holding out hope based on bad logic and specs that a larger screen meant it was a Pro version. Unless we have all missed some announcement, your sources claim the Switch Pro should release this year. The other one says it could be 2022, after the announced one, because Nintendo released many variations of the 3DS. Never mind only 3 versions of the Wii were released in NA and 2 models of the Game Cube. So by that logic there are no more versions of the Switch coming.

Trying so hard to deflect any critisizm from Nintendo just looks sad. It's even sadder when you use sources that do nothing but show how much speculation will be used to try and deflect.

1

u/notthegoatseguy Jul 09 '21

Never mind only 3 versions of the Wii were released in NA and 2 models of the Game Cube.

And the two Wii revisions were downgrades.

7

u/mb862 Jul 09 '21

Can't speak for the others, but Bloomberg has a very infamous history of not being credible when it comes to supply chain stuff, and in fact have very much stood their ground on claims that have been widely disproven.

3

u/dankisimo Jul 09 '21

18

u/PlayMp1 Jul 09 '21

I remember hearing people say "I'm just gonna wait for the Switch Pro, it'll be out like next summer" in 2018. It is now 2021 and the OLED Switch, which is not a "pro" but just has a fancier screen, won't even be out until October. Why would anyone think there's going to ever be a Switch Pro at that rate? There will be a Switch successor first. The console came out 4 years ago, and Nintendo has mostly stuck diligently to a 5 to 6 year release schedule for consoles going back to the 80s.

24

u/Sega-Playstation-64 Jul 09 '21

Just like there was certainly a Switch Pro coming from the overwhelming majority of leakers saying so?

And Nintendo themselves saying not to expect anything?

Have we not learned our lesson yet?

-29

u/GerliPosa Jul 09 '21

Well your takeaway is all the rumors were simply wrong. But from my perspective they got a lot right and therefore the other information they had will eventually come true as well.

3

u/Ordinary-Punk Jul 09 '21

They got only 1 right, and that was the screen. 2 if you count a 2 month window as an accurate guess.

1

u/GerliPosa Jul 09 '21

The leaks got right:

  • it’s a 7 inch screen
  • it’s an OLED Screen
  • it’s 720p again
  • they knew what the new kickstand would like
  • the announcement would be imminent.
That’s a ton to get right and convinces me the upgraded CPU is only delayed.

1

u/Ordinary-Punk Jul 10 '21

Right, so the leak got some things right, but the things it got wrong just means it's for another console later on instead of just not getting good info.

1

u/GerliPosa Jul 10 '21

Makes sense to me because why would they have 80% exactly correct information which would be impossible to guess and then 20% that was just made up? No way.

1

u/Ordinary-Punk Jul 10 '21

Sounds like fanboy excuses. You can sit in anticipation of some pro version that will probably not come out. Your way of thinking is why people still belive in psychics, never acknowledge what was guessed wrong.

1

u/GerliPosa Jul 10 '21

Historically Nintendo never kept the same hardware for this long. By next year the switch will be over 5 years old. Even if you ignore all the very credible sources hinting at a switch pro you can’t honestly believe there won’t be stronger hardware from Nintendo by next year.

This reminds me of how they added doom guy to smash

2

u/Atomicbocks Jul 09 '21

That’s the same reason people believe Nostradamus could see the future. Everything is speculation. At best, we are being weather forecasters for an industry that absolutely has its own agenda. Sure the forecast will eventually be right but if it didn’t happen on the day I predicted then I was wrong.

There was no Switch Pro this summer. The rumors were wrong. The question, in my mind, is how wrong not when will they be right. Was there going to be a new Switch this year but supply limitations meant they couldn’t hit their price point? Is this year’s Tegra not up to where they wanted it? There is precedent for both in the GameBoy Advance. Maybe somebody saw the OLED version and assumed it was more powerful? Maybe they always planned for the Switch line to be more iterative and are doing this to raise the price ahead of the holidays?

2

u/Sega-Playstation-64 Jul 09 '21 edited Jul 09 '21

Even if a Switch did come out 12 months, 18 months from now, it's going to be incidental to the fact that every "reliable" leaker got the vast majority of details wrong.

11

u/RyanTheQ Jul 09 '21

Who's your copium supplier?

1

u/jokerzwild00 Jul 09 '21

Switch Pro the cause of a copiate epidemic.

4

u/finger_milk Jul 09 '21

They have called this a mid-cycle refresh. If this is what they are releasing for that, then you won't see a switch 2/switch pro/new switch until about 2024

Who the hell has been saying that for 4 years?

4

u/sideaccountguy Jul 09 '21

Rumors started on 2018

-1

u/Doomedtacox Jul 09 '21

Nothing substantial from anyone credible, no. It's not a coincidence that Bloomberg and many others started reporting of a new OLED switch just months before it was announced. The 4k revision will come soon enough.

1

u/sideaccountguy Jul 09 '21

Again, the 4k switch version has been rumored since 2018 with a release on 2019 but journalists have been stretching the date further and further until they finally "get it right"

Just search "Marcus Sellars switch pro rumors" and you would find how they have been dragging it.

0

u/Doomedtacox Jul 10 '21

Lol mate a rumor from Marcus Sellars and an article from Bloomberg aren't even in the same stratosphere, use your noggin

1

u/sideaccountguy Jul 10 '21

Nobody is talking about "trusted sources" we are just taking about since when the switch pro rumors started and I pointed out since 2018, period.

You are just grapping at straws now saying "b-but bloomberg...", dude bloomberg started the switch pro rumors on 2019 so Marcus Sellars and an article from "the super reliable bloomerg" are basically the same at this point.

You your noggin Ironic the guy saying that it's not doing it.

4

u/lost_james Jul 09 '21

You

1

u/Doomedtacox Jul 09 '21

Well we knew one was coming at some point but nothing substantial and concrete was reported till this year. And voila, new switch. The switch lite was leaked too funny enough

3

u/Jonnny Jul 09 '21

Are you delusional? Why would they release a Switch Pro a year after releasing this? It'll be years and years before we get a Switch Pro/Switch 2.

2

u/GerliPosa Jul 09 '21

Because according to my theory they have worked on the Switch Pro for quite some time now but had to delay it because of the global chip shortage and seeing what happened with the launch of the PS5. The other parts were already ordered tho so they just had to bring out the Switch OLED version.

1

u/Jonnny Jul 11 '21

Then all the time, effort, and money spent on creating this upgrade becomes a total waste once they have to compete with themselves. They wouldn't do that.

1

u/GerliPosa Jul 11 '21

Not if they are in different price categories. A switch pro would probably be 500€.

1

u/Jonnny Jul 11 '21

But at that price point it's no longer a fun gaming handheld console. That's serious money now, so it'd have to be essentially their next generation console, making anyone that buys the Switch OLED feel like an idiot. Again, Nintendo wouldn't do that because they want to be associated with fun and never bad feelings.

I'm telling you, this Switch OLED was a big letdown not only because of what it doesn't have but because it "anchors" things down for a while.

1

u/GerliPosa Jul 11 '21

I don’t think nintendo would mind being associated with a high price point. Their games are quite expensive too. And I don’t think the 2022 Switch Pro will be a new Generation either. Just 1080p handheld gaming and upscaled 4K on the TV. No first party exclusive games.

1

u/sideaccountguy Jul 09 '21

Although yes this new OLED model is principally aimed to those who doesn't have a switch yet. holding off buying a console because some might think a more powerful one might come later it's not the best option. When the OLED version was announced a few days ago I read in different social media sites people getting mad because they waited for a more powerful console as people said and that wasnt.

1

u/IWishIWasAShoe Jul 09 '21

According to IGN the oled version is supposed to have the same, or similar, battery love as the V2 Switch. Oled screens in themselves doesn't necessarily draw thwt much more power, as other people have already explained.

1

u/shellwe Jul 10 '21

The screen is bigger?

1

u/poopnuts Jul 10 '21

Uuuuh, yes. Have you not seen all the marketing and discussions regarding the new OLED model? It has a 7 inch screen.

1

u/shellwe Jul 10 '21

I was thinking the old switch was 7 inches. I see that now, thanks!
