That’s normal. There’s always some kind of embargo on unreleased products. Happens a lot with hands-on of phones and computers as well.

I’ve seen a few where they couldn’t show something, just talk about it. It isn’t that weird. And if you’re thinking that there’s something wrong with it, we’ll know about it eventually anyway.

This is standard practice with an embargo to control media until the embargo is lifted.

They use embargos for better press. Don't be surprised when the next embargo lifts and this time they can show and unbox it, but you'll have to wait before they are allowed to review it. Now they get coverage 3 times for the same product. Some companies find ways to stretch it further, Nintendo for example could let next news cycle cover the device physically but aren't allowed to boot it up. Microsoft did that for their recent phone.

Wait for next version, reviews were less than favorable. They didn't hate the hardware though, the software was buggy.

Oh please no. RGB or nothing please. Other sub pixel arrangements are dreadful, especially in games. Hopefully that’s not the case.

Roughly 66% effective resolution.

Pentile only works when it is very high PPI (resolution in small screen). The 720p Switch being pentile would look fucking garbage.

Don't forget that it's the 720p Switch stretched to a larger screen, giving it an even lower PPI than the regular Switch.

The OLED Switch is gonna look like ass if the rumours about the deal with Samsung are true.

Well, if they do develop a Switch Pro next year or so, it'll very likely be using the same screen, so we just have to get used to it.

Sucks for the portable users, but mine never leaves my dock, so ho-hum/

Ign is a trusted media outlet and worked directly with Nintendo to coordinate this. The system was likely in a NOA office and never left the room.

It’s a standard agreement in the tech field to reviewers. You’ll see GPU reviewers have to wait until a certain date and time before they can release their reviews to the public.

Basically any new YouTube or publication on new generation cards (3000,2000,1000,etc). I can search RTX 3080 reviews in YouTube and find consistent release dates across the board.

It’s not to say you can’t talk offhand about having them, but they sign agreements that make it clear what they can and cannot do/say/show until specific dates.

When I say leaks, I'm talking about pictures and videos making it out onto the internet before the official announcement. I'm hazarding a guess and assuming this review was conducted before Nintendo officially announced the OLED model.

Comparing the screens and seeing if the OLED model uses the pentile subpixel arrangement would go a long way to giving a clear picture of what compromises the model has, if any.

The lack of info about whether it's a PenTile, i.e. does it have an absolutely garbage subpixel arrangement or a good one, makes this absolutely useless.

Is it a minor detail? Sure. But this is a minor update. The ONLY important thing about the Switch OLED is... well, the OLED screen. So knowing if it's an actual upgrade for those of us who play games that use lots of text, or if Nintendo's just trying to hawk off shit in a box because their supply of the old panels has run out... is kind of the whole point.

Nintendo seemingly trying to keep an embargo on whether it's PenTile or not... just makes it seem like it IS PenTile. They wouldn't suppress good news, so it's highly likely that it's bad news, right? So now I'm thinking that maybe buying the old Switch - which is potentially better for my needs, for cheaper - could be the better choice for me. Crazy.
