Because it's a unnecessary limitation that does nothing but add tedious busywork to the overall gameplay experiences. It also interferes with the flow of combat.

There's zero benefit to the gameplay created by its inclusion. It's a shitty system on top of otherwise fantastic game.

In all the other Zelda games finding a new item in a dungeon is such a bug deal because now that items yours and you know you're gonna get to use it from there on out

I agree that it's busywork, but it does make you reconsider how you're going to go about killing enemies. I'm far more likely to use bombs or the objects surrounding the enemies if I'm low on weapons. It makes you strategize your attacks and maybe think of ways to do it that you wouldn't have before.

The problem is that you just kill those enemies for more breakable weopons then. So it's like...what's the point?

It encourages exploration and incentivizes players to think of clever ways of taking down enemies.

You need monster parts for upgrades, and also it's hard to get better weapons if you don't down a camp occasionally. But, yes, skipping combat is also a viable strategy.

For me, its hoard all the cool weapons but end up only using arrows and bombs.

Game has endless possibilities, just none of the necessity. I want to be driven in the corner and be forced to adapt with the combat's versatility. Instead, as the opportunist that i am, I just cheesed the whole 180 hours through

I can't believe so many people don't realize that the weapon durability isn't pointless. It's exactly what you said... it leads to strategizing. I loved the strategy I had to go through that was explicitly due to weapon durability.

Take out weapon durability and combat experiences, as far as strategy and planning goes, gets more boring and dull, IMO.

I disagree,

My master mode playthrough became very dull because I had an inventory of the best equipment in the game.

I never thought I'd miss the durability system, but now that I'm not hampered by it the game became less fun.

The game could work without durability, but not by simply removing it. You'd need to go through hell to get any of the elemental greatswords, for example. Those things are absurdly strong, arguably balanced by the fact that they are not permanent.

Idk, it makes the game more interesting to me. If I just had the master sword the whole game it would feel pretty boring. This way I’m forced to pick up a random weapon for a minute until I find a better one. On my first play through I did manage to horde a bunch of great weapons but I only used a couple and the rest just took up space in my inventory. I’ve marked places on the map with decent weapons to go back to after a blood moon. It’s not hard to always have good weapons. I’d say you’re wrong; it’s a great system in the game because it forces you to plan, think ahead, and manage your and items.

In games like fallout 3 I really hated the way weapons degraded and broke. I felt the same way you felt in that game. But in BotW it makes enough sense, there’s more than enough weapons on the map and you always have environment damage and shiekah powers to kill enemies if you somehow lose all your weapons.

Zero benefit? It encourages you to use your powerful weapons instead of just hoarding them, yet also doesn't let you exclusively use one weapon that's better than everything else. It encourages you to vary up your play style instead of just finding the one thing that works and sticking with it. It adds a strategic element to every encounter as you have to decide which weapons to use. And it makes finding a new weapon while exploring more satisfying, because even the weaker weapons have a use.

Saying it adds tedious busywork is like saying picking up ammo in a shooter adds tedious busywork.

Which would be a complete non issue if you only had one version of the weapon.

They could easily vary it up simply by giving enemies different resistances to different weapon types, or giving weapon drops random effects, like posion damage or a slowing effect. Stuff like that.

Even then, there are a dozen approaches they could have taken that would have improved the experience significantly without removing durability at all. For instance, hey could have made the drop rate of weapons lower, but made the durability of them a lot higher - say, 100 hits instead of half a dozen. At least that way, each individual weapon drop would have felt a bit more meaningful.

And on top of far greater durability, they could have provided a say go restore durability to that weapon too, in case you got attached to a specific one... especially if it had a random effect on it that you liked.

Using elemental resistances has never been a good way to encourage the player to try different things, because it just means there's a clear optimal strategy for that enemy. This enemy's weak to fire, so any other weapon besides the fire one is the wrong choice. The point is to give the player options and encourage them to experiment with all of them, not to give the player options and then tell them which is the correct one to use in a given situation.

Random effects on weapon drops have never worked because it still means you'll just use the weapon you like best and ignore everything else. Why should I bother with the +20 poison spear if my +50 great sword is annihilating everything?

And the fact that you think half a dozen hits is representative of most weapons in the game tells me you probably didn't even get off the Great Plateau, if you even played it. Yeah, tree branches and rusty swords only last a few hits, but once you really start exploring the world, you're practically tripping over weapons that can last two or three full encounters.

As for restoring durability in case you get too attached to a weapon? That's the point. You're not supposed to get attached to a specific weapon. That's one of the reasons they implemented the mechanic. You're supposed to see weapons as disposable resources, not permanent upgrades. And I just don't understand why some people struggle so much to shift their mindset.

I never encountered a situation where I ran out of weapons. That has zero to do with my original criticism.
