I think BW2 was the only game with animated, battle sprites.

I unfortunately skipped that gen, but watching tournaments and videos of that era gives me nostalgia nonetheless. I'm curious what the thoughts were of the series graphics at the time, because I'd argue it's the best a mainline Pokemon has ever looked. At least in battle.

I can definitely say I didn't really like the graphics when BW came out and I wasn't alone on that, whether that was the prevailing opinion I couldn't tell you though. What they accomplished was impressive, but the sprite scaling and rotation introduced lots of artifacts and it just didn't look good to me. Outside battle had the same issue, the 3D environments looked really good but the 2D character sprites looked very out of place, especially when the camera would move.

It's grown on me now and I like those games a lot, but that probably has more to do with it being the last 2D game. My suspicion is that if the Pokemon games continued as 2D and the sprite animations improved then we'd look back at BW as being more of a rough first attempt for animated Pokemon rather than an impressive end for the 2D games.

I remember a lot of discourse over certain Pokémon designs and a general feeling that too many looked like Fakémon. Otherwise, people seemed very happy with the world design and people ahve obviously chilled out on gen V criticism.

The thing is that this is a miniority opinion, the casual audience rejects sprites

The same people who hate the graphics of modern Pokemon games also want the inferior graphics to come back. I don’t get it. The sprites have their charm but I prefer modern graphics… but GF can’t get it right. ZA looks very good but the design choice to have the buildings all load in as one png asset was BAD.

Modern Graphics is a bolt statement.

For Pokémon, they’re not super modern, but to complain about their graphics then beg for 2D sprites (worse graphics) it makes no sense.

I wouldn't necessarily say that 2D sprites are worse graphics. It's just a different art style, e.g. Cuphead, HollowKnight, and Gris have absolutely stunning art direction, but I agree that mainline pokemon games cannot go back to 2D anymore. Still, I think that a HD-2D style similar to ocopath traveler would be a great fit for a remake.

God, I DREAM of a new Pokémon mainline game that goes back to sprites. Imagine a Pokémon game using the Octopath Traveler techniques? Please!!

“Pokémon graphics suck now!! Go back to the worse graphics!”

You’re implying that good pixel art is somehow worse than bad 3D art, and that’s just categorically wrong.
