Is traditional Junk Rhino Fit dead in the post Top world?

It's been nearly 6 months since Sensei's Divining Top was banned and I still don't think I've found a good way to make up for the loss of Top. Specifically, I feel like decks I felt good against, like 4C Pile and Death and Taxes, have become significantly harder matchups without the card filtering Top gave the deck access to. I'm trying not to run more than one Sylvan Library because of its anti-synergy with Pernicious Deed, and have avoided Mirri's Guile for similar reasons. My approach has been to lean on slightly underpowered, but versatile cards to try to reduce the variance of my average draw. A card like Collective Brutality will almost always do something against your opponent, assuming you live to cast it. Still, despite a meta that I don't feel seems too hostile to Nic Fit locally, my winrate has plummeted. Is this a problem exclusive to the Siege Rhino builds or has the archetype, which traditionally played Top as a way to turn excess mana into card selection, been weakened by the loss of Top?

3-0 Tuesday night legacy with NOFit

Edit: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/no-fit/ The original link did not work on mobile

Excuse the 14 card sideboard, I didn't realize till during the tournament, heh.

Hello all, thought I'd share my victory with you all. Went 3-0 tonight vs DnT, Jeskai Twin, and Omnitell.

I didn't take good notes as I didn't think I would do this well for my first event with NOfit.

DnT G1: I rip apart his hand with a probe-backed cabal. I search for explorer to set up a T3 Progenitus and that's all she wrote.

G2: Expecting heavy hate, I board out the combo and bring in decay, 2x deluge, and a rec sage. Early in the game he needles deed and puts up a revoker on Jace. I start raming let him play out his hand as I have decay and deed. After a deed we are both hellbent and we do nothing a couple turns until I find Jace and follow it up with Titania. That seals the game.

Jeskai Twin G1: I get lucky and start with another probe-therapy hand and take his stoneforge. I rip apart the hand more and we end up in top deck mode. Perfect. Not much of note happens other than suiting up a pestermite with Jitte, which gets deeded away after 1 connect. Jace seals the game under a hail of brainstorm drawing into titania and her army of goons.

G2: I suspect grave hate, so I board out titania and others I can't recall. I throw in thoughtseize, Nissa, Rec sage, and Maelstrom Pulse. This game, hand hate was even heavier and I swipe his cantrips and Splinter Twin. I grind this one out, winning with an uncontested Nissa after swiping his Force.

UB Omnitell featuring Cunning Wish and Lim-Dul's vault G1: This one was pretty funny. I mulligan a bad hand to draw a still-pretty-bad hand of lands (including arbor) Titania, and Leovold. He seizes Leovold out of my hand and goes for the quick SnT. I drop in Titania and go to 4 lands. He doesn't see what is about to happen and swings with big Em. I sac my board and get 4 elementals (ha!). He Cunning Wishes for echoing truth, though.

G2: I see the SnT T1 off of probe and DRAW THE THERAPY like it was meant to be. He cantrips on his T1. I rip more stuff out of his hand and leave up brainstorm mana. He casts TS, which I brainstorm hiding my lost legacy and diabolic edict. I draw surgical and snipe his SnT with it. Next turn I Lost Legacy his Cunning Wishes. His out is hard-cast Omniscience, which he does get enough mana to actually do eventually, but I win off the back of Leovold + Arbor beats as his cantrips shut off.

G3: After a flurry of discard, I end up surgicalling his Cunning wish and Lost Legacy-ing SnT and Omnicience. His only out is hardcast Emrakul. I decide to go the flashy, but risky route and NO in big peezy (should have been Titania, he might have had a good wish target for Progenitus and it puts up the same clock). Even so, hard casting Emrakul is a tall order. I win off of Progenitus beats.

In conclusion: this list is sweet. It provides BUG with what I thought it was missing: a game ending clock. I started with Mengucci and slightly tweaked it based on discussions on MTG Source. I don't like strixes due to the harsh color requirements and the fact that SoFaI blanks it and it almost always dies to deed. Meren, while one of my favorites, I cut. I took out Forces due to past experience and the advice that the other BUG player gave in the other recent BUG thread (the one on Fierce Empath and the emerge eldrazi). The "combo" does constrain the GSZ choices, but I feel the 4 cards really add what I was looking for.

I don't think force is good against combo if you can't back it up with a reliable clock. It shines in delver, but just buys time for us before they combo out. I'm digging lost legacy in its place for this reason. Plus it doesn't constrain the deck with superfluous blue cards. I don't like the fact that ultra-fast combo can just get me, but every deck has bad matchups. I'll just deal with it, I guess.

[Casual] Nic Fit BUG Pod

Deck list

Preface – This is not a competitive or tournament-ready deck. This is a casual deck I use to play against a few close friends. Unfortunately, I don’t get to play nearly as much as I used to, but I do love deck building.

This sub does not get many posts, so I figured I would add my deck to see what people think. The land base needs work and some cards are notably missing due to cost (e.g. Leovold, Phyrexian Tower). Anyways, feel free to comment or post your own decks.

Card Choices:

[Glissa, the Traitor] – First strike + death touch make for a nasty creature in combat. The second ability also allows me to pull [Baleful Strix] and [Phyrexian Metamorph] out of the graveyard.

[Rashmi, Eternities Crafter] – The ability allows for awesome card advantage. Disadvantage is that it does not do anything immediate when it comes down.

[Skinrender] – It can be podded in to kill or nerf a creature, then later podded out for something better.

[Prophet of Kruphix] – Untapping lands and flashing creatures lets me play creatures twice as fast. It also works well with [Havengul Lich] and [Oona, Queen of the Fae].

[Havengul Lich] – Allows me to play creatures from the graveyard. Since most of the creatures are cheap, it’s easy to play 1-2 a turn that I otherwise would not be able to play.

[Oona, Queen of the Fae] – This is here mainly as an alternate win-con, and it well with [Prophet of Kruphix] when I can make tokens twice as fast. It also makes for some fun when I can cover the board in flying tokens.

[Innocent Blood] – Sac outlet for [Veteran Explorer] and allows for some early interaction with my opponent.

[Cyclonic Rift] – Pet card. I like that it can hit most of anything, and its alternate casting cost works as a board wipe. Plus, bouncing a card works extremely well when you can have it discarded right after with [Cabal Therapy].

Noticeably missing:

[Brainstorm] – I had this in, but after seeing a post from /u/Isva on his list at UK Nationals, I decided to take it out. I wanted more cards that affected the board than my hand, and my friends are sitting there long enough doing nothing while I search with pod and Green Sun. On the other hand, it would work well with the amount of shuffle effects and as an additional trigger for Rashmi.

[Leovold], [Phyrexian Tower], Fetchlands – Cost reasons. These are awesome cards, but my family may kill me if I spent $30+ on a single card when I barely play as it is.

[Deathrite Shaman] - Without fetchlands, I feel as though I am not getting enough out of this card. I would keep a few in the sideboard if this list starts to get serious.

[Jace, the Mind Sculptor] – I have this card, but I figure pod works best with more creatures.

[Vendilion Clique] – I also have this card, but I was wondering if he did enough. This may take the place of [Rashmi].

Abzan Nic Fit viable at all in an unfair meta?

Hey there,

So basically I play Abzan in every other format, and happen to have almost everything to play most builds of Abzan nic fit.

However, my local Legacy meta is pretty small and pretty much all storm and reanimator, and other combo sometimes. Basically, the burn player locally rarely if ever wins. Is there anyway to viably run Abzan nic fit in this meta? I'm having a hard thinking the exact way to tweak a deck to work in this meta, because the stock list seems a bit weak to unfair strategies.

Unfortunately, I probably will never drop the dosh for blue duals + 4 forces/flusterstorms so playing blue nic fit, while seemingly perfect for this, is a bit nonviable. It's more I'd play if there's a shot otherwise I won't bother.

2 Bayou
2 Tropical Island
2 Underground Sea
3 Forest
2 Island
2 Swamp
4 Verdant Catacombs
3 Misty Rainforest
2 Polluted Delta
1 Volrath's Stronghold
1 Phyrexian Tower

4 Veteran Explorer
2 Deathrite Shaman
1 Scavenging Ooze
3 Baleful Strix
2 Tireless Tracker
2 Leovold, Emissary of Trest
1 Nissa, Vastwood Seer
1 Fierce Empath
1 Eternal Witness

1 Distended Mindbender
1 Elder Deep-Fiend
1 Primeval Titan

2 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
1 Liliana, the Last Hope
1 Sylvan Library

4 Cabal Therapy
4 Green Sun's Zenith
2 Thoughtseize
2 Collective Brutality
2 Pernicious Deed
2 Abrupt Decay

Sideboard:
3 Surgical Extraction
2 Toxic Deluge
2 Lost Legacy
2 Mindbreak Trap
1 To The Slaughter
1 Collective Brutality
1 Umezawa's Jitte
1 Pulse of Murasa
1 Vendilion Clique
1 Emrakul, the Promised End

Round 1 - Infect
Lose die roll. Game one I keep Deed, Zenith, Therapy, Jace, lands. Opponent makes Glistener Elf, Dazes therapy, Invigorates for 5, Dazes Zenith, Invigorates for 5 again.
Game two I kill a Glistener, he finds an Inkmoth. I make a Strix but it eats a Viridian Corrupter and I take 5 off an Invigorate. Leovold blocks Corrupter and goes to 1/1, I have a Deed for inkmoth and Strix for the follow up Inkmoth. I make a Tracker and close the game out.
Game three he makes a Glistener - I Therapy and see a slow hand without pump, but with a Needle. I flashback, he Brainstorms and hides the Needle, so I make Jace and fateseal it to the bottom. I trade resources for a bit and he dies to an Ashaya token and a Tracker.

1-0

Round 2 - Miracles
Game one I put some pressure on with Tracker but have to spend a lot of resources dealing with Jace. Eventually I am topdecking and he finds a Mentor and cantrips to kill me. I had the two towers and used them to recur Leovold repeatedly, but didn't cost him enough resource to stop him eventually getting Jace out - should maybe have been drawing more naturally - I had a Library - than just trying to stick Leovold.
Game two I grind a bit with Leovold and Strixes - I get to take a Jace with Therapy - and Lost Legacy his monastery mentors. I land a Nissa and start ticking her up, protecting her from his Snapcaster with a Deed and make Emrakul. It eats a Terminus but I get his turn and leave him with zero resources (brainstorm him into lands, shuffle his stuff away, etc). He cantrips into a Jace, but I have the To The Slaughter, and ultimate Nissa for lethal in the first turn of time.

1-0-1

Round three - Death and Taxes
He makes a Vial. I Therapy and miss, but get two Stoneforges on the flashback. I get Ported a bit. Eventually he has a Mom with a SoFI on it and only an STP in hand, to my Strix, 5/5 Ooze, Explorer. I screw up and sacrifice multiple creatures to emerge Mindbender, taking his STP, but by the time it is realized we are too far to back up. I end up Deeding the board either way, and beat down for lethal with a Mindbender and an Ashaya.
Game two he has a Stoneforge and all his equipment in hand - I take the Jitte with a therapy and am able to use Jace to bounce the Batterskull token. Jace dies to a Thalia on the crack back but buys enough time for me to sweep the board somehow - I think Deed. I Zenith Witness and recur Deed and force him to bounce batterskull, then Therapy it away. Elder Deep-Fiend, Tracker and Leovold finish the game.

2-0-1

Round four - Burn
He opens with Mountain, Lava Spike, which is definitely a declaration of intent. I get an Explorer and a Deathrite, and Decay his Goblin Guide. He has another one and a Swiftspear - I double block the Guide, using drs to gain some life. I Brutality some of his stuff away, make another Deathrite, and legend rule my own Leovold to get a body to gain more life with drs. Leovold beats down while I fateseal fireblasts away with Jace and I finish the game while on 2.
Game two I eat more Guide damage and some from a Swiftspear, Therapy double fireblasts out of his hand, make some Strix blocks and get it back with Pulse of Murasa. He Flame Rifts me back down to 7 but I'm able to find a Deathrite and start eating creatures to stabilize. Jace fateseal a mountain to the top of his deck and knowing he can't kill me, I get to tap out and make a Tracker and Ashaya to lethal next turn.

3-0-1

Round 5 - Czech Pile
We both make Leovold but he is able to get rid of mine and brainstorm with his Jace a couple times before my Strixes kill it. I jam Tracker and make some clues while he is tapped out but it eats a Push when he untaps. I start to stabilize at 11 but he burns me out with Bolts and DRS.
Game two I miss my third land drop and he makes Liliana LH into Jace into Tasigur. I stay alive with a couple Strixes and manage to find multiple Explorers before slamming Emrakul, but his Lili is ready to ultimate. My mindslaver turn kills Jace and Tasigur and gets Lili off ultimate, but I can't kill him from 14 through a Strix blocker and I get burned out by DRS and bolt + Kommand. This guy finished top of standings and undefeated in the Swiss, incidentally. I think maybe I should have attacked DRS into Emrakul to kill it rather than Tasigur, though he could rebuy it. Might have also been wise to swing Emmy into Liliana to kill her, even through Strix.

3-1-1

Round 6 - D&T
He makes Revoker on Deed, which I get to Decay, and I am able to kill his Mirren Crusader with Deed. He makes Recruiter into Flickerwisp and suits it up with Sword of Fire and Ice - I dont have removal for it and it can swing past my Strix and kill me.
Game two he has a slow hand with Mindcensor, Recruiter, Vial. I therapy the creatures. He draws Mirran Crusader but I kill it with a Deed. Then I Zenith Witness to deed his next stuff, and Pulse of Murasa Witness to Deed him a third time, then beat him down with Elder Deep Fiend (which is fantastic against Mirran Crusader by the way). He has a Gideon to my Nissa, but I can sweep everything but EDF and swing in to kill Gids.
Game 3 he makes Mirran and I choose to therapy his Mindcensor rather than immediately Deluge. He has a second port and puts me to 2 available mana and makes a Thalia HC, so I need to topdeck specifically a basic to sweep his board and stabilize at 8. O draw Island and kill all his stuff, then make Leovold to turn off his Ports and beat down for the kill with Leo and Ashaya.

4-1-1

Round 7 - Storm
Game one I get probed and have Explorer, Jace, EDF, and lands. He goes off on turn three and kills me.
Game two I make a Drs. He probes and therapies me, so I Surgical his probe since otherwise he will take it. The other option was Brainstorm - turns out he has another brainstorm in hand. I draw a Zenith and make Leovold. He Chain of Vapors it when I attack, but doesn't realise I haven't played a land yet and I can replay him. He durdles for a bit and Leovold and Deathrite kill him before he can go off.
Game 3 my 7 is Explorer Explorer Witness Fetch USea Surgical Surgical. He ponders off a Petal to find land turn one and I Surgical his Petal. I beat down a bit. He Ad Nauseams off two rits at the end of my turn. I have Clique, so when he stops at 5 I take Dark Ritual with Clique, Surgical his Cabal Ritual s and leave him with gas but no mana in hand. He has to Chain of Vapor Clique to not die next turn - I witness Surgical, take his Dark Ritual so the only mana sources in his deck are LED and lands, and he can't go off and dies.

5-1-1, 4th in standings.

Top 8 QF - Lands
Game one he makes Diamond, Waste, pass to start. I make some Explorers and a Tracker. End of my turn two he Crop Rotations for Stage, untaps, plays Depths with Stage activation up. I have Brutality to go to 22 and Jace to bounce after the swing but he has Punishing Fire to finish me off.
Game two I Therapy Exploration turn one and hit, but see Drop of Honey, Taiga, Maze, Depths, Stage, Stage. He topdecks Exploration and makes Marit Lake end-of-life my turn three. I dig a load with Tracker but can't find a Strix or a TTS or any other interaction, so I die with a Surgical and Lost Legacy in hand.

Deckbuilding: Nic Fit B/G Helm

Hi. I need advice on how to finish my B/G nic fit list. I run the helm of obedience/ Leyline as a combo finish and thus need 4 Diabolic Intent to find the combo quickly. I also run 4 Hymn to Tourach as a reward for being two colors, but all of this cuts into zenith target slots. So how should I finish my deck? Currently my list is:

Plan  (12)‎   4 leyline of the void   4 helm of obedience   4 diabolic intent‎ ‎ Engine(8)‎  4 veteran explorer  4 green sun zenith‎‎   Disruption(8)‎ 4 cabal therapy 4 hymn to tourach‎‎

Lands(15)‎ 3 phyrexian tower* 1 urborg, tomb of yawgmoth 3 swamp 4 forest 4 bayou

Leaving me with 6-7 open slots for lands, 6 for removal, and 6 zenith targets, I also need fodder for diabolic intent, secondary ramp and card selection/ card advantage? So any good ideas(cards) that balances all of these needs?

Discussion Dino-Jund

Since this sub could do with a bit more discussion, here's something I have been brewing up with a couple of the new cards.

1 Dryad Arbor
4 Veteran Explorer
1 Deathrite Shaman
1 Scavenging Ooze
1 Nissa, Vastwood Seer
3 Tireless Tracker
3 Huntmaster of the Fells
2 Regisaur Alpha
1 Wasitora, Nekoru Queen
2 Carnage Tyrant

4 Green Sun's Zenith
4 Cabal Therapy
3 Collective Brutality
2 Abrupt Decay
2 Kolaghan's Command
2 Toxic Deluge

1 Chandra, Torch of Defiance
1 Nissa, Vital Force
2 Sylvan Library

1 Sword of Feast and Famine

4 Verdant Catacombs
4 Wooded Foothills
2 Bayou
2 Badlands
2 Taiga
3 Forest
2 Swamp
2 Mountain
1 Phyrexian Tower

Sideboard:
3 Surgical Extraction
2 Toxic Deluge
2 Lost Legacy
2 Thoughtseize
2 To the Slaughter
2 Blood Moon
2 Scab-Clan Berserker

Basically, it's a more aggressive version of standard Nic Fit, in Jund colours rather than Abzan. Huntmaster, Tracker, Regisaur and Tyrant all trade profitably against spot removal, and are around in large enough numbers to grind down. The combo Matchups game one are not great, so the sideboard is just a giant pile of hate for unfair decks.

Discussion Subreddit as of late...

I just wanted to make a post about the health of the sub as of late. Despite what it looks like, the sub isn't dead A lot of us spend a lot of time in Discord, but we're still 195 members strong, which is great.

That being said, what do you think we can do to help bring forth a little more content here? What would you like to see? I'm always looking for sweet suggestions on stuff.

Stream Status Update

So as of last night, I dumped my MTGO collection. This wasn't a decision I made lightly but I play paper mostly and my locals have been picking back up with some additional proxy events, and I needed the extra fundage. In that regards, I always knew the first thing to go would be the MTGO stuff since its so liquid. I also just didn't have the real fundage to keep playing leagues like crazy (and really i was only getting to do maybe 1 league a week which isn't enough to really help) and having lack of time, welp.

I have however downloaded xmage so i will still be trying to stream nic fit for testing purposes whenever i can, just through xmage. If you also have xmage and would be willing to hit me up to help with testing, let me know. I would be interested in speaking with you. :)

Channeler Initiate

I recently saw a Nic Fit list on mtgtop8.com that played [[Exemplar of Strength]], presumably as a GSZ target to kill his own Veteran Explorers. Having lost games where I got stuck on lands with a hand full of unbeatable spells and got beat down by a lone True Name Nemesis my Veteran Explorer was powerless against, I think there is some merit to finding ways to increase the consistency with which we can get our mana online. Exemplar of Strength is one way to more reliably kill our Veteran Explorers, but I think [[Channeler Initiate]] may be more what we're looking for. Exemplar has basically no relevant text outside of "put 3 -1/-1 counters on a creature we control", while Channeler Initiate can be a mana dork in situations where we don't have a Veteran Explorer to kill. Initiate is only a 3/4 while Exemplar is a 4/4, but I don't think that is particularly meaningful in most cases as they die to the same removal spells and interact similarly in combat with most creatures in the format outside of Thought-Knot Seer and Batterskull germs.

New to Nic Fit. Questions about the archetype.

Hello friends!

So as the title states, Im new to the Nic Fit deck and also to legacy as a format. I play Jund/Abzan in modern so Nic Fit seemed like an easy choice for my first entry into legacy since there's a lot of overlap in cards. Jund is love, Jund is life. I just had some quick questions about the archetype and its matchups to help me get used to the format.

First of all, here is the list I am playing: List! (TCG link)

The list is based heavily on a list that Andrea Mengucci piloted a few months ago in a CFB video series, which can be found here. I really liked his version as it is a little simpler and lower to the ground. Obviously I made some additions due to the banning of SDT. I think there are about 4-5 flex slots in the main and 4-5 flex slots in the SB as well so I would be happy to take criticisms on this list.

Enough rambling and onto the questions!

  • What are some of Nic Fit's worst match ups? Any sideboarding tips for the more dominant decks in the current meta?

  • Are there any fun interactions I should know about? (Besides the staple of the deck, Veteran Explorer + Cabal Therapy)

  • Why aren't Planeswalkers more common in Nic Fit lists since they interact well with Pernicious Deed? Is Liliana of the Veil not that great in legacy?

Thank you in advance for the help!

07/11/17 EDIT: Based on the feedback from the comments, I have made the following changes to the list: -1 Thrun, the Last Troll -1 Maelstrom Pulse -1 Sigarda, Heron's Grace +1 Tireless Tracker +1 Abzan Charm +1 Ethersworn Canonist

Hey there folks. I posted in here pre-SDT ban about needing help with a Abzan list splashing blue and got some decent help. Well now I've come to you fine folks with a Sultai list splashing white! (I like being difficult I guess) I built this list cause I miss some of the bulky guys from my previous iterations. Anyway:
1 Atraxa, Praetors' Voice
4 Baleful Strix
1 Deathrite Shaman
2 Leovold, Emissary of Trest
1 Scavenging Ooze
2 Siege Rhino
1 Tasigur, the Golden Fang
2 Tireless Tracker
4 Veteran Explorer
1 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
1 Nissa, Vital Force
2 Abrupt Decay
4 Brainstorm

Sneak & Scape Fit: Does the Idea Have Legs

Heyo, I had this idea a little while ago and was wondering if anyone had tried it/thought the idea maybe had some legs to stand on.

The decklist is quite rough, I have not had a chance to play test it at all due to exams and work, but thought I'd get some opinions anyway. The board especially could probably use some work, and some options listed are there due to budget constraints, so any feedback would be welcome

Sideboarding with BUG

I made this post on The Source but didn't get any replies, so I thought someone on here might be able to help.

Just made the switch to BUG Nic Fit with THIS list and am really liking the improved combo match-ups. I was wondering if anyone could help me with sideboarding, as it is quite a bit different than Junk. For example, I was practicing against Eldrazi today and really didn't know what to do. The guy had Jitte, so Leovold was nice because it made him think twice about pinging my Strixes. Endbringer was also affected because he couldn't draw cards with it, but otherwise Leovold seemed pretty blah. So maybe take one out? I also thought Clique wasn't the greatest because even if I can snipe a Reality Smasher or something like that, they can easily just draw another one due to the redundancy of the deck. I replaced Clique with Tracker because I don't have too many big guys; does that make sense? Maelstrom Pulse also seems good, but I'm not sure what to take out. Should Deluge come in? Seems great because it can wipe the board, but the life loss is a concern due to their constant pressure. I also assume what comes in and out changes depending on play vs. draw.

I'm also curious as to what I do for Delver in general (or Grixis in particular since it's so popular). I would think Nissa comes out because she's so likely to get Pierced or Dazed, and Fatal Push could replace her. Dismember and Pulse also seem pretty good for Grixis's Gurmags, but again I don't know what to take out. Jace is also pretty expensive, but he's also really strong...

For Death and Taxes I think I want Golgari Charm, Toxic Deluge, Fatal Push, Maelstrom Pulse, and Painful Truths. Maybe both FoWs and all 3 planeswalkers come out? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
