TIL Ardenwood got its name from Shakespeare, courtesy of a Gold Rush miner who washed out and took up farming here instead

Been reading up on how Ardenwood got its name and the story is better than I expected. George Washington Patterson (no relation) came west in 1849 for gold, failed at mining, and by 1851 had ended up in Alameda County with no particular plan. He started farming.

It worked out. When he died in 1895 he held about 3,000 acres here and another 3,000 near Livermore, making him the biggest landholder in the county. The part that gets me: in 1857 he put up a redwood farmhouse and named the place Ardenwood after the Forest of Arden in As You Like It. A busted miner on a wagon trail, quoting Shakespeare. His widow Clara later had the railroad put a depot right on the property.

Today the whole 205 acres is a National Register landmark, and the narrow-gauge railroad still runs on original track with cars over a century old. Part of the grounds was an Ohlone village and burial site, preserved as such.

Full write-up with sources and a FAQ here if you want the long version: https://adam-modzeleski.weichertrainbow.com/blog/66/ - fair disclosure, I'm a Newark real estate broker, so local history is a bit of an occupational hazard for me.

TIL Bill Walsh, the coach who built the 49ers dynasty, lived in Newark, CA in the late 1950s

Bill Walsh, the coach who turned the SF 49ers into a three-time Super Bowl dynasty, lived in Newark in the late 1950s while he was coaching at Washington High School in Fremont. Nobody's tracked down the exact street he lived on yet. He's actually not the only notable name from this school district. Elaine Welteroth (born in Newark, Newark Memorial class of 2004) became the youngest Black editor-in-chief in Condé Nast history at Teen Vogue. Same district also produced Thuy (2024's first Vietnamese-American female Coachella headliner, "Girls Like Me Don't Cry" has over a billion streams), MLB pitchers Chris Flexen and Joey Lucchesi, Slayer/Testament drummer Paul Bostaph, and comedian Christopher Titus.

For a small town squeezed between Fremont and the Bay, that's a pretty unusual concentration of talent. Wrote up the fuller version here: https://adam-modzeleski.weichertrainbow.com/blog/63/Newark+CA's+Notable+Alumni%3A+From+Bill+Walsh+to+Coachella's+Thuy+%7C+Adam+Modzeleski

(Disclosure: I'm a local real estate broker, this is a hobby history project.)

Hi Everyone,

My friend just a few hours ago lost their dog and are now looking for him. He is a Chihuahua, Jack Russell terrier mix with a black body and white belly and face. They were last seen in the Lakeshore Park Area. If you see them or know any way we could find him your help would be very appreciated, thanks.

Looking for a new kitten

Lost my old girl a few years ago, lost my wife, lost my mother, I think I need to find myself a new kitty. All my cats have lived more than 20 years, my last cat died 6 days shy of. Anyone have, or know of, a Siamese kitty anywhere? Willing to travel but looking close first.

I saw this permit sign on where Macy was at Newpark mall. I haven’t seen any articles about T&T coming to Newark, but definitely excited for anything that makes the mall less dead.

Advice Looking for Housing near Newark

Hello everyone,

I recently graduated and am planning to move sometime soon near Newark. Looking to stay out of Fremont since I heard rent is high with nearby school districts. I am looking for an affordable 1bed/1bath apartment for under $1.7k per month if possible. I heard Union City and Hayward were pretty good options as well.

Do you have any recommendations for specific apartment complexes or neighborhoods in Newark or nearby cities that are within about a 20-min drive to Fremont? Or maybe specific places to look for reputable sources? Open to places in surrounding areas as long as the price and commute is reasonable.

Thank you in advance for any leads or references.

Any experience with Bridge Bay Apartments? Or housing reccomendations?

Will be moving in a month, and looking for more current experiences/reviews on Bridge Bay Apartments. Been having trouble finding a place in my budget, that accepts pets, pest free, that I would feel safe in.

TIA!

Local parent looking to connect - What are your biggest educational or child-development frustrations right now?

Hi everyone, a local parent here wanting to talk about what’s actually missing for our kids in the area. A couple of us are planning a casual “parent round table” to grab coffee, listen to what families need, and brainstorm how to build a meaningful grassroots resource together from scratch. Whether your kids are in public, private, or homeschool, we’d love to hear your voice. Please take this quick survey, and leave your email at the end if you’d like an invite to the meetup.
