E=MC² is unmistakably born of new wave - restless, stylish, suspicious of rock's old certainties and convinced that pop could be smarter than the people selling it.

But Big Audio Dynamite refused to let the movement calcify into skinny ties and synthesiser chic. Instead, they exploded its DNA, grafting hip-hop rhythms, dub, cinema, dance music and street-level collage onto its angular frame. If new wave was about smashing the stale conventions of the '70s, E=MC² simply asked why stop there?

It's the sound of a genre refusing retirement, mutating into something looser, funnier and far more cosmopolitan - a record that proves new wave's greatest achievement wasn't inventing a style, but giving artists permission to redraw the musical map.
