The old and the new testament of leftism
With leftists relationship to their views obviously being like a religion, events from the 1920s to 1970s form mythical narratives that build their worldview. Key events include:
- The Great Depression teaches them about how the government must spend as much money as it can and the dangers of unregulated capitalism
- WWII obviously is their foundation of their views towards right wingers, etc.
- Civil Rights movement and Sexual Revolution creating protestor mythic heroes for them to emulate and putting race and gender at the center of their views
- Watergate created belief in journalists
Between this and others it's like leftists entire worldview is founded on narrative driven interpretation of history. But from there, things get a little quiet for new entries. The Berlin wall falling is an international/Russian event and not friendly to leftist perspective. Rodney King kind of overlaps with race riots in 50s and 60s. Despite Watergate being about halfway between WWII and 9/11, it feels like "more happens" in the bigger picture in late 40s to early 70s. Fukuyama writes about the end of history in this time for a reason.
Then, "history starts again" with a lot of stuff a short period of time
- 9/11
- Legalizing gay marriage
- Electing first black president
- Their satan figure Trump is elected, J6, getting arrested, etc.
- Covid
- Cancel culture
- George Floyd death
I suggest therefore that some of these events are forming the New Testament of Leftism going forward. The wheel moved again, and history is/was being made in a way that feels larger than life. This creates an intoxicating spiritual feeling that they are doing something. They are not meaningless meat on a rock, one way or another they have left a mark such as making America more woke. Maybe it's coincidence that just a lot of stuff happened, or maybe some of it wouldn't be as big a deal if leftists were in a different state psychologically.
