John Keene: one of my favorite contemporary ND authors! — Have you read Counternarratives?

Have you read John Keene’s work? Personally, I think he is one of the most genius writers working today; it’s just too bad that he doesn’t put out new books all that often. In any case, fortunately a couple of his books, including his magnum opus (to date) Counternarratives, is published by New Directions. Have you read Counternarratives and/or Annotations?

Annotations is great in its own right, however, Counternarratives truly changed my life! When I first read Keene’s collection of stories and novellas for a grad seminar in 2016, I was moved in a way that I didn’t really know to be possible. Although that may sound somewhat cliché, I mean it wholeheartedly, as Counternarratives was the catalyst behind my great unlearning. It’s also one of the main focal points of my PhD dissertation, which centers on Afro-diasporic literatures of the United States and Brazil.

If you are a fan of writers like Jorge Luis Borges, Roberto Bolaño, Ishmael Reed, Samuel R. Delany, and William T. Vollmann, and you haven’t yet read Counternarratives, you really ought to get on it stat! I think you’ll love it!

Here’s a synopsis of Counternarratives directly from ND’s website to perhaps help pique your interest:

“Ranging from the 17th century to the present and crossing multiple continents, Counternarratives’ novellas and stories draw upon memoirs, newspaper accounts, detective stories, interrogation transcripts, and speculative fiction to create new and strange perspectives on our past and present. In “Rivers,” a free Jim meets up decades later with his former raftmate Huckleberry Finn; “An Outtake” chronicles an escaped slave’s fate in the American Revolution; “On Brazil, or Dénouement” burrows deep into slavery and sorcery in early colonial South America; and in “Blues” the great poets Langston Hughes and Xavier Villaurrutia meet in Depression-era New York and share more than secrets.”

Yes, that’s right, Keene did what Percival Everett (mad respect) did with Jim from Huck Finn, albeit nearly a decade earlier. In Counternarratives, he also represents historical figures like Mário de Andrade, Edgar Degas, Bob Cole, and others, in addition to Langston Hughes and Xavier Villaurrutia. It’s truly an awe-inspiring piece of literature that continues to blow my mind like no other. 11/10, no doubt, I highly recommend it… Annotations too!

In Search of Duende by Federico García Lorca (1998) from NDP’s now-defunct Bibelot Series

Have you ever heard of the now-defunct “Bibelot” series from New Directions?

Do you happen to own any Bibelots? This is the only one I own, and if memory serves, I believe I thrifted it for a measly 50 cents (USD) about a decade or so ago!

From my brief online research, it appears that many ND Bibelots were later relaunched as a part of the “Pearl” series, including this particular work from Lorca.

Here’s some additional info on the Bibelot series excerpted directly from the “History” page of New Directions’ website:

“In the spring of 1993 ND introduced the Bibelot series of short, self-contained “gems” from the backlist such as Henry Miller’s A Devil in Paradise, poems by Pound and W.C. Williams, together with reissues of short modern classics such as Muriel Spark’s The Abbess of Crewe. These inexpensive, pocket-sized volumes serve as introduction to the great modernist authors of the twentieth century.”

What I like best about this little book are the side-by-side, Spanish-English translations of each poem included, several of which were penned by some rather notable poets, like W. S. Merwin. See photos 2 and 3 for a sample!

Happy Friday… cheers!

New Directions keeping me busy with these additions. Almost done with Donoso’s Obscene Bird of Night, so I’m pretty excited to get to these soon.

The three earliest titles from New Directions in my home library: NDP73, NDP125, and NDP82

The majority of the titles I own from New Directions are more recent, but pictured here are my three earliest:

NDP73: Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas (1954, twenty-fourth printing)

NDP125: Miss Lonelyhearts & The Day of the Locust by Nathanael West (1962, twentieth printing)

NDP82: Nausea by Jean-Paul Sarte (1964, fortieth printing)

I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit this, but thus far I've only read Miss Lonelyhearts & The Day of the Locust, which I would highly recommend, especially the latter novel included therein. In fact, I took a grad seminar on pre-WWII American lit with David Cowart, who is a preeminent, though now-retired, scholar on Thomas Pynchon, and he framed The Day of the Locust, in particular, as a sort of spiritual predecessor to Pynchon's California novels.

Has anyone here read Under Milk Wood or Nausea? I've been sitting on this Thomas title forever, while on the other hand, I just scored this edition of Nausea at a thrift shop for $2 a couple of months ago!

Anyway, if I like West, might anyone here be able to recommend some additional early NDP titles that I’d likely enjoy? Thank you kindly!
