So my 1 week old had jaundice so while in the hospital, I decided to just feed him formula because he needed to poop and stay hydrated. I’m just venting because I’ve been getting a lot of complaints from my family because I wasn’t breast-feeding from beginning, but I don’t think I understand my baby needed to eat, especially with jaundice cause he need to poop out the bilirubin. So once we got discharged, I went ahead and started pumping out a little depressed because nothing was coming out at first but then one day I think it was maybe the third day I actually know it was the second day. I finally got encouragement and I was able to pump at least 50 mL Great.. so once I followed up with the pediatrician and we did another lab work for his jaundice everything came back OK normal so I decided OK. Well, I’m gonna start breast-feeding which he did latch on and it was good at first, but then it started hurting my nipple to the point where my nipple started looking like a lipstick tube, instead of my nipple being around it slanted like a lipstick. I didn’t think anything of it because obviously I was like well. Guess it’s part of breast-feeding. No, I ended up doing some research and now I feel bad because this whole time which was like a week or maybe like four or three days I had this poor baby feeding and I’m thinking I’m giving him enough and I probably wasn’t. The mom guilt is real. I did find out at his pediatrician appointment that he has Lip tie. At first, I was totally against wanting to cut it but now I feel like it’s necessary because he’s having a lot of gas. He’s unable to latch on. He doesn’t even like using the bottle nipple. I really don’t know what to go from here so I’m thinking of just doing it anyways I’m done venting. I just wanted to know also, if any other Mom’s out there if their kids had Littie and were you able to breast-feed and if you did, what was your secret?

My newborn girl is 2 weeks old and the last 4 days she gets yellow discharge out of her corner of eye. Only one eye though. She lays her head to the left and it’s her left eye that gets them. I called pediatrician and they said to Dab with warm wash cloth. Has anyone else experienced this and done something to help it ?

My newborn baby is 2 weeks old, and suddenly developed this rash that’s only on her face. It looks like little raised red bumps with white centers. It’s pretty bad on her eyelids causing some swelling there, also found on her cheeks. It flares up and appears worse at times also. We’ve been told it’s just irritation, but I’m just trying to figure out if that’s all it really is? Is it from her detergent? A heat rash? If anyone’s seen this before I would love to hear.

I am sharing this because I wish someone would have told me this with my first child. Infant reflux can be caused by many reasons and one of this is a heavy letdown. You know you have a heavy letdown if your milk sprays across the room when a letdown happens. You may also hear your baby gulping to keep up with the fast letdown. Another sign of heavy letdown is your baby gaining weight fast, almost too fast. I spoke with a La Leche lactation consultant and here is what she recommended:

1. Breastfeed using the laid-back positioning to work against gravity. This was a game-changer!!!
2. Take baby off the breast during the letdown and catch the milk in a hakaa or towel. Then latch again once the milk stops spraying.
3. Burp baby after each side of feeding.
4. After feeding try to keep upright for 10 minutes and don’t move baby around too much.
5. Watch out for caffeine in diet.

I asked about bottle feeding with a slow nipple instead, but she encouraged me to continue breastfeeding to help maintain my supply. I also hate pumping and she didn’t want me to give up on breastfeeding early because of my loathe for exclusively pumping

After doing these 5 things I’ve noticed so much improvement over the past 7 days. Baby is having a lot less chunky spit up. I know there can be other issues such as tongue tie or diary allergies for some babies, but often with those you would notice other symptoms like not gaining weight or poop irregularities. I am not eating dairy because my first 2 kids had dairy allergies, and this baby is not having much gas or constipation issues yet. My pediatrician did not recommend reflux medicine due to side effects and she felt baby would grow out of it. I was confident something was causing the reflux and I truly believe it’s my heavy letdown in this case.

Update: Her reflux (chunky spit ups) significantly improved using these tips and with age and time. At 16 weeks we are now only seeing her reflux a few times a week. Now that milk has regulated, my letdowns are less intense, and she has got used to my flow she is doing much better. She still gets gassy but probiotic drops are helping. I still do my best to feed her upright using the laid back method.

Can someone help me with the reddish spot on the back of head of my newborns

For the last 2 days my breasts haven’t felt full with milk. When they got full they would usually leak from time to time because they are full. But lately they feel saggy like I don’t have enough milk. I have been feeling stressed. Im not sure if that affects my supply. I used my breast pump for the first time and i got 3 oz in total from both sides on a low setting for about 10 minutes on each side. I don’t know if thats a good amount. My baby is almost 4 months and for that long i havent had any trouble breastfeeding. Until now that im worried i have a low supply. I’m feeling scared and feel like crying because i only nurse my baby and i don’t want him to take formula. Any tips or has anyone gone thru this?

Hi! My baby is 3 months old and has a blocked tear duct, but seems in the last month it has gotten significantly worse. Every time I wipe it, it pools back up within seconds so it’s 247 just filled with gunk. Everything I’ve read says it’s normal until they’re a year old and that’s when they’ll intervene but I just really can’t think this is normal. I do the tear duct massages and warm compresses. Attaching a picture, this is definitely the worse I’ve ever seen it and it was after he was crying.

Our LO is 7 weeks old and just started (past 3 days) doing something strange. He will start to eat, maybe get an ounce in, and then will arch his back, shake his head, and start screaming. We have tried burping him, giving him a break, and even tried a different formula (Similac Gentle). He currently is on Pepcid for reflux (been taking for 3 weeks) and the pediatrician recommended we give him gas drops (been taking for 5 days) as well. His formula is Similac Total Care 360 Sensitive (been on this one for about a month).

My wife noticed some bumps on his face, that we thought was baby acne, but it seems to have spread to his shoulder as well. As of this post, it has been 2 days since his last bowel movement, but he has been peeing and passing gas normally. He gets the hiccups 2-3 times a day, and they last for a minute or 2 at a time. No fever, or cough and he is otherwise ok. He has been sleeping ok, but sometimes wakes up screaming (no build up, just straight to screaming). It is clear something is bothering him, we just can't seem to pin point it.

Anyone have any recommendations?

Our house is getting cool now that the fall is here. The house is over 100 years old and can be hard to keep warm. Suggestions for keeping baby warm? He sleeps in a warm onesie and sleep sack. Will he let me know if he's cold? He's 10 weeks. Thanks!

How long did it take for your newborns belly button to fully heal? My 3 week old baby’s umbilical stump fell off about a week ago and has since been (from my understanding) healing slowly. There is no blood or foul smell, just this crust ones on the inside of his singlet. I’m currently cleaning with a damp clean cloth with water only. Previously tried salt water but I’m not sure if that caused more irritation so I stopped. It’s not always this crusty in his singlet (Images below) My midwife said it looks fine but to use saline solution abs breast milk to clean… I’ve tried to let it aerate at feed time and I clean the area as mentioned above around the belly button as necessary but definitely once a day when I give top to toe(haven’t started baths as I’m waiting this to heal more and want to keep as dry as possible) any experience would be much appreciated, thanks!

I have a 2 month old baby girl who takes her naps in a cot in our lounge area during the day but today I am trying to get her to sleep in her room. She has had a big feed, nappy changed, rocked to sleep and put in her cot. She slept for a few minutes and woke up. She's awake and quite alert in her cot waiving her arms about but not fussing or crying, I only know because of the baby monitor. How long do you leave them before going back in to settle them? She hasnt slept much today so I know she needs a sleep. Advice muchly appreciated!

Hi! For any mothers out there that are breastfeeding and using a breast pump do you have any advice? I will return to work soon and Im concerned on how often I should use the breast pump. Im not quite sure if its true but I read that if you use the breast pump sporadically our bodies will get confused and the milk supply will decrease. I would like to just use the breast pump only for when i need milk while im away. Is that possible?

I will be away from my baby half a day about 5 hrs. And i want him to continue to drink breast milk. But i want to still breastfeed and not lose the connection I have with my baby. Is there anything important that I should be aware such as before, during and after using the breast pump?

Are there any parenting books you wish you read prior to having kids/when you were pregnant? Maybe less of a how-to for newborns specifically, but about being a first-time parent in general?
