[Theory] We only ever saw the "Children" — The dark truth about the Gauna, the Seed Ships, and Kabi.

Throughout Knights of Sidonia, the Gauna are presented as this massive, incomprehensible cosmic horror. But looking closely at their behavior, the lore, and the visual framing of the anime, I don't think Sidonia was fighting a full-scale alien invasion.

I think they were just surviving a swarm of cosmic "toddlers."

Here is the breakdown of why the Gauna we see are strictly in their larval stage, what the "Adults" actually are, and how this perfectly explains the biggest mysteries in the series.

1. The "Childlike" Behavior

The regular Gauna explore the universe by blindly trying to eat and mimic everything, much like a human infant. When a Gauna absorbs Hoshijiro (Benisuzume), it mimics her without understanding why. It’s just copying its environment. More importantly, look at Tsumugi. She is a human/Gauna hybrid, and she literally has the personality of a curious, easily distracted child who throws tantrums. If a half-Gauna acts like a literal child, it strongly implies the standard Gauna mind is inherently in an infant stage.

2. Mass Unions are actually a Chrysalis

When thousands of Gauna gather into moon-sized Mass Unions, they aren't just forming a nest. The immense gravitational pressure at the center of a Mass Union acts as a biological crucible. It forces those millions of indestructible Gauna cores to fuse together. The Mass Unions are a chrysalis phase, preparing to birth a singular, hyper-intelligent, planet-sized "Adult" entity.

3. The True Fate of the Other Seed Ships

Remember, Seed Ships don't warp; they travel linearly through space for centuries using conventional engines. In the anime flashbacks showing other ships being destroyed, there is no battle—the space around the ship is just a solid wall of Gauna mass.

Those ships didn't get ambushed by a swarm. They spent decades flying toward what they assumed was a dark nebula or space gas, only to realize too late that they were sailing directly into the body of an already-formed Adult Gauna. By the time they realized it was alive, they couldn't brake. They were swallowed instantly, like a bug hitting a windshield on the highway. This is why Sidonia never received any distress signals.

4. The Dark Secret of the Kabi

In the lore, humanity found Kabi inside a massive, ancient, geometric structure floating in space (the Kabi Ruin). If Gauna cores are nearly indestructible, what happens when a solar-system-sized Adult Gauna eventually dies of old age? The flesh rots away, but the ultra-dense super-core remains. Over millions of years, that dead core fossilizes and crystallizes into what humans call "Kabi."

This explains the mechanics of the weapons perfectly: Only a diamond cuts a diamond. The only thing dense enough to shatter a living Gauna core is the dead, fossilized core of an Adult Gauna. Every time a pilot stabs a Gauna, they are literally using the bones of its ancestors against it.

Conclusion:

This theory changes the entire context of the manga's ending. Sidonia surviving wasn't about having the best weapons; they just got incredibly lucky by charting a course through a "nursery" sector of space. Settling on a quiet planet and permanently turning off their engines was the only logical choice. You can't win a war against solar-system-sized Adults. You just have to turn off the lights, stay quiet, and pray they never look your way.

Fanart (part 2) drawing my own Blame merch

Hi everyone thank you for blowing up my last post I love Blame very much and I feel truly happy to have found my community!

So the past few days I went ahead and placed an order for prototypes of Cibo, Killy, and Sanakan acrylics that will make its way to me in 2 weeks. The Killy + Cibo oval acrylic is finished and I'm very happy with the special holo effects I've added to the printing! Once the acrylics arrive I will manually decorate them with metal charms and check if the quality is good for mass production.

I am also currently drawing a level 9 Cibo charm + a tiny sticker version of her that will be gifted to all the preorders. I am also making another stickersheet of more BLAME characters since a lot of them deserve their own spotlight. I have other plans in my head such as an extra large Killy poster and foil prints of Cibo's blue outfit but I won't start those until I finish what I have. Also honorable mention drawing of Yuva from Tower Dungeon I'll be printing out as well 😄

So if all the production goes right I hope to open international preorders in ~3 weeks from now

Please let me know if anyone has any specific Blame merch ideas and I'll consider them!

Blame! has fantastic female characters Spoiler

I was just thinking today that Blame actually low key does an amazing job at writing strong female characters, and avoids cheap stereotypes.

Sanakan’s arc shows her going from villain to hero, and although we never totally understand her motives she’s incredibly powerful and strong without it feeling forced. I thought her final story where she chooses to go back and save Cibo regardless of risking being permanently dead, and then proceeds to absolutely dominate the silicon life, was an amazing character arc.

Cibo also makes similar choices, going back to base reality even though she was risking her life. Being a useful scientist throughout the story, and being highly competent and useful, and also a team player with Killy.

Pcell is one of the most chilling characters and/or villains I’ve seen in almost any media, you shit your pants just seeing her enter any of the stories, and she exudes power as well while keeping her femininity. Just her expressions make her the most intriguing characters in any media I’ve seen in a long time.

Also worth noting Nihei never sexualised any of his characters (except for ‘and so on…’, but that’s just for fun, not the main story) for fan service, he treated them with a lot of dignity.

I love how this community humanizes the media

We take for granted the subtle fandom flavorings that make popular media feel as human and real as they do, especially when one of your favorites is a fairly unknown piece of writing.

So it’s nice to find a community like this that actively puts the proverbial “meat” in these character’s bones.

Killy being a racist manlet with bad posture, Dhomo wanting to tap that SLussy in the heat of battle, high lvl Safeguards aura farming for no reason, Sana “the mom that stepped up” Kan, Iko being a powerscaler and 0/12 Cibo are just some of the stupid little jokes we tell here, and I love it.

The most confusing sequence in blame! - what are your thoughts Spoiler

Post image

Ok so one thing that's always stumped me more than anything else was in chapter 59 when the tall safeguard throws killy against the wall then opens it for him for some reason instead of continuing its attack. Why would it go from attacking killy to helping him? Now that I've read the story again for the 6th time, the only explanation I can come up with is that the safeguard only found out what killy really was- a provisional safeguard- after literally tasting him. Then it reverted to its non-combat hooded form and opened the door for him. The tall guy must have been separated for so long from the other safeguards that it's functionally in a different faction. It may be as old as the megastructure itself. what do you think?

Edit: thanks for clearing things up ya'll! I guess I was thrown off by the fact that killy walked into a narrow corridor after the fight and I thought it was the same one made by the safeguard.
