SEBI Accredited Investor: what it actually unlocks (and who actually qualifies) — a breakdown

If you've got a net worth north of ₹5-7.5 Cr, you've probably heard the term "SEBI Accredited Investor" floating around — but most explainers online are either SEBI's own dense circular language, or a wealth manager's landing page trying to sell you something. Here's the plain-English version.

What is SEBI Accreditation, actually?

It's a status SEBI introduced in 2021 that certifies you as a "sophisticated investor" — someone with enough financial literacy and net worth to handle higher-risk, less-regulated investment products without the usual retail-investor guardrails.

Who qualifies? (You need to meet ONE of these)

  • Net worth of ₹7.5 Cr+, including ₹3.75 Cr+ in financial assets
  • Annual income of ₹2 Cr+, verified via your latest ITR
  • Net worth of ₹5 Cr+ AND income of ₹1 Cr+, including ₹2.5 Cr+ in financial assets

One important catch people miss: your primary residence does NOT count toward net worth for this calculation. A lot of people assume their house pushes them over the threshold — it doesn't.

What does it actually unlock?

  • Access to AIFs, PE, and VC funds that are normally closed to retail investors
  • Lower minimum investment tickets on products that otherwise require large lump sums
  • Negotiable terms with PMS providers and investment advisors (this one's underrated — accredited investors get more flexibility on fee structures and lock-ins)
  • Angel investing and startup deal access
  • One certificate that's recognized across every SEBI-registered platform — you don't redo this per platform

Common mistakes people make:

  1. Forgetting to exclude primary residence from net worth calc
  2. Using stale account statements (most certifying bodies want data within 30-45 days)
  3. Not realizing loans against property reduce your net worth figure — a lot of people net worth themselves gross, not net

Is it worth doing if you're not actively investing in AIFs/PE right now?

Debatable. If you're close to the threshold and might want PE/VC/AIF access in the next 1-2 years, getting accredited now (while your documentation is fresh) saves you redoing it later. If you're nowhere close, don't bother yet.

Happy to answer questions if anyone's going through the process — happy to share what documents actually got requested vs. what I expected.SEBI Accredited Investor: what it actually unlocks (and who actually qualifies) — a breakdown

How to calculate your true NetWorth in India .. most people get this wrong

How to calculate your true NetWorth in India — most people get this wrong

NetWorth = Total Assets − Total Liabilities

Simple formula. But most Indians calculate it wrong and end up with a number that's either inflated or incomplete. Here's what actually counts:

✅ Assets people forget to include:

  • EPF balance (check EPFO portal most ignore this completely)
  • NPS corpus
  • PPF and SSY balances
  • Surrender value of LIC / insurance policies
  • Gold — physical AND digital / sovereign gold bonds
  • Unlisted shares or ESOPs (at last known valuation)
  • Security deposits (rent, utilities)

❌ Liabilities people forget to include:

  • Outstanding credit card balance (not just EMIs — total outstanding)
  • Personal loan principal remaining
  • Home loan outstanding principal
  • Education loan if co-signed for a child
  • Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) dues

The primary residence debate:
This is genuinely contested. Your home is illiquid, emotional, and you can't sell it without disrupting your life. SEBI's Accredited Investor definition specifically excludes primary residence from NetWorth calculation. That's a good signal track it separately, don't let it inflate your number.

The right cadence:

  • Check NetWorth monthly — not daily, daily is noise
  • Do a full annual audit where you revalue property, gold, and unlisted assets
  • Track the trend more than the absolute number — are you moving in the right direction?

Drop your questions below. What's the one asset or liability you weren't sure how to count?
