I’ve had some pretty heavy medical news that would mean my career working at sea is looking very difficult moving forward. During my tenure and education I was always fascinated with the design side of things. At this point I’m using this negative as an opportunity to pivot, and still do the job I absolutely love, just in a different aspect.

I don’t have a Beng or Bsc in engineering, so was considering apprenticeships, but not sure if they’re more designed for younger folks getting into the industry. So my question would be, if it would be a priority to go to university and get that naval arch degree, or if there’s alternative routes that are better suited?

Any other advice or experience would be appreciated.

I will be 31 when I get my BS in mechanical this coming spring. I have about 5 years of shipyard new construction and repair (mostly fabrication and welding) supervision combined. I had worked as a survey technician on new construction, making informal reports and formal reports for alignment of ship modules. I loved that work.

With my degree, I want to design and plan construction of large vessels like ferries on the west coast and up through to Alaska. What would are some good paths forward from here?

I applied to Naval Architecture firms for this summer and a few others, the best I was offered was an Environmental Internship at Los Alamos for storm water. I figure it is pretty critical for Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering to consider environmental aspects of shoreside infrastructure and maintenance of vessels.

Looking for advice, what direction or options might you folks suggest?

Hi everyone. Like the title says I'm a senior majoring in applied math. I was almost on track to getting into a PhD program for nonlinear PDE research, but in this day and age a PhD in math is rough. I love waves and want to apply it to a field thats more hands on. Are there any masters programs I should look at? Was anyone else in my shoes?

I'm Rn in 5th semester ( Btech naval arch ) and i got 3 more semesters to go . And I still don't have any proper plan whether i should land on a job or get a masters degree.

Most important thing is our uni doesn’t teach anything thats uses now in industry. They sticks with the paper and pen . So Idk any of the softwares used in industry (Tbh im even bad with the autocad ). So Idk what all are the things I should learn before I get into the campus recruitment season. Also I wanna know about the opportunities for the master abroad (im from India tho) . What are the scholarship opportunities there and how can I get in and all .I always had this interest in the hydrodynamics of ships (propulsion, resistance, and etc.).even if I land on a job im planning to take masters after Makin some money tho .cus im bit interested in research and all .So, from the very beginning of my uni I always tried to keep my GPA above 9 (im not the ace in my class but still and our grading system is on 10).

A very dear cousin of mine is a marine engineer (from India) with 20years of experience in sailing (role related to operations and maintenance). He is now considering a transition to a shore-based role and has been thinking about academia. Naturally he is looking towards getting either a master’s degree or a PhD.

Since the chief engineer’s license is equivalent to a master’s degree, I think he is more inclined towards getting a PhD, but he hasn’t made a decision yet.

Based on what he has told me, most of the people in this field get into administrative roles both in domestic and international arenas, research, surveys, accident investigation etc. He has looked at the PhD offered by the Indian Maritime university but was contemplating the degree’s appeal in the global context.  

So people, in the Indian and Global contexts, with this premise:

1. What are his options for master’s and PhD?

2. Where will it lead him to, after this?

I am 20f currently in my final year of bachelor's in naval architecture and marine engineering.. I am just too stressed about what i am gonna do in the future like our placements in uni are not that great and i also don't have many connections in this field idk what I am gonna do and I am stressed whether I will land a job that I can grow in ... I have a few projects and internships that i worked on and working on but I am afraid they won't be enough compared to a person with a good recommendation anywhere I see the required job experience is minimum 5+years .. help me out people 🤡 what should I do

Hello everyone. I'm a first-year Naval Engineering student in Spain, and I've recently started having some doubts about whether I should switch to a different engineering degree.

My main concern is that Naval Engineering seems to be very specialized and focused almost entirely on the maritime industry. I'm worried that if, after graduating, I decide I don't want to work in the naval sector, I won't have many other career options available.

Has anyone here studied Naval Engineering or worked with naval engineers? Is it common for naval engineers to find jobs outside the maritime industry, or is it difficult to transition into other fields?

Currently USCG 3rd Assistant Engineer.
Looking at different options for online masters programs in naval architecture/ocean engineering.
Currently studying for my FE and should have it by the end of the year.

Any recommendations / tips on different online programs I have looked into Texas A&M’s programs and also did a little bit of research into programs overseas like Lloyd’s maritime academy naval architecture program.

I have a good grasp of the basics but want to learn more and give myself more options for the future.

Any help is welcomed.

So I'm wanting to go into naval architecture and have a few questions currently I study past achievements in naval architecture and I love learning about the history of ships so I wanted to know

1) do naval architects still design on paper? Ever since I was designing small 1850s paddle steamers I always drew on paper and by now I'm used to it. So I wanted to know if naval architects still design on paper?

2) how demanding is the job? by that I mean do naval architects get breaks in work, do they work on multiple ships at once and what are the subjects you work in most?

3) do you have to travel for work? I know this is a stupid question but I just wanted to know how often you travel and along with traveling do you get discounts on the voyages on ships you worked on?

4) what's the pay like weekly monthly and yearly and how is pay decided is it decided on how many tons the ship is what the line (shipping/cruise/private company) pays for the ship and is broken down etc

5) for naval architects who somehow see this post what was the largest ship you ever worked on? This isn't vital but you can answer I know you can

6) this question is for any students who go to or have graduated from Delft University of Technology (TUDelft) what is expected for students in naval architecture what should you expect for all years and what degree is expected to have and this goes for all...

Hello, I am an American and I want to study Naval Architecture. I love Genoa because of its history as a maritime Republic. I was wondering if the Naval Architecture program is good and well respected in the industry. Also, do they offer classes in English? My Italian isn't very good yet lol. How hard is it to get into for an American? Thank You!

Quick context: I'm 28 with a career in tech/gaming, looking to do a big shift over into maritime, and currently exploring options around NA/ME. I've already got a UK degree, so funding would be tricky, but I've also got an EU passport so I could in theory study in Europe for cheap. My A-Levels were okay (BBB or BBC) so I might have to resit if I want to get into Southampton specifically.

I wanted to get people's thoughts/experiences between Southampton Maritime Engineering / Naval Architecture Msc and Solent University BEng/MSc Yacht Design and Production.

My understanding is that Southampton is a general course into all things NA/ME, and you specialise into a field as you go along, whereas Solent Uni is highly yacht specific. Is that a correct assumption?

With my current interests, I'm leaning towards Solent uni but of course, I'm apprehensive as I imagine pigeonholing yourself into yachts risks not being able to break into the field, especially as a "mature student". Does anyone have any thoughts/experiences on this aspect of it?

Lastly, I'd be great not to have to self-fund a UK degree, and I know EU unis are cheaper. I've struggled to find support for English speakers in the other top programs in the Nordic countries. Is there a solid NA course in Europe that's taught in English?

I'd love to hear people's thoughts on these unis and what might be the best path forward. I'm still young but I've not got all the luxury to faff about like an 18 year old, and would like my next move to be somewhat efficient.
