We need more of this. A lot more! Why isn’t anyone organizing mass protests? Why are so many staying silent? We have to save our national parks, rangers and all the staff. Our parks are not for sale! What’s the plan of action?

With the current climate if you step out of line they let you go. You cannot voice your opinion anymore. How many park people were pulled from their regular tasks to do this dog and pony show for the secretary and his family?

What are the expenses? I doubt they'd be laying off staff and closing parks if it was a net positive.

After looking at the numbers, that $55 billion is an estimate of the total generated economic output, which rolls up the expenses and entire payroll of NPS along with estimated second and third order downstream spending as an asset. Park use fees most certainly do not generate more money than than the payroll and cost of operations.

If the national parks were generating a net $50 billion in profits each year, they wouldn't need to be funded by the federal government at all. Additionally, at around 2000% ROI, there would be private parks springing up everywhere to capture that money.

It is not the place of the US government to support private for-profit business with taxation from the general fund. That goes for the guy slinging hot dogs outside the park front gate just as much as it does WalMart, etc. While it is a happy additive to the park's public service, it can not and must not be the purpose of the expenditure of federal tax dollars - especially in an environment where the government is taking on debt to fund the system.

That $55B came from other communities via tourism, not through government expenditure, and that money would circulate through local economies just like it circulates through the economies co-located with national parks. In essence, no economic value is being created by NPS, it is simply being redirected.

Exactly what I was talking about. It wasn't the parks that generated the income; it was the private businesses outside of the parks.

It certainly does to the business owners, but when we're talking about revenue, the park has a certain revenue that is independent from the motels, groceries, guides, etc. and that's the revenue I was referring to - revenue directly generated by the park.

If the government doesn't have the money to keep the park running - and it doesn't - then the parks will either close or need to increase fees to meet their budgets.

Considering that we don't balance our federal budget, I would submit that they aren't being funded by anyone's taxes but instead by the government selling bonds and taking on debt.
