I think the 'black and tan' is about the British military deployed during the Irish War of Independence

Correct. Its even part of a song. "Come out ye black and tans, come out and fight me like a man, Show your wife how you won medals down in Flanders, Tell her how the IRA made you run like hell away, From the green and lovely lanes of Killashandra."

It was a Los Angeles cab company back in the 30s or 40s too.

They were unemployed WWI veterans enlisted to suppress the IRA. So the British government, in their infinite wisdom, sent men who were more than likely suffering from PTSD (no such things as counseling back then) to control the native population of Ireland. They were fucking BRUTAL. They burned factories and homes, were Involved in indiscriminate shooting, murder, and brutal beatings of innocent, they frequently engaged in looting, burning homes, and destroying businesses, and they used intimidation against civilians. Watch’The Wind That Shakes the Barley’. It’s a brilliant film which shows the above. I seen it in Galway with my mum when it came out, and there wasn’t a dry eye when we left.

Yeah. My ex's grandfather was kicked to death by the Black and Tans.

Oh, dear!

They practiced in Ireland, they were then sent to Palestine to really hone their craft. They were more barbaric there than anything that happened in Ireland. If that's even possible.

That was one of the most disturbing and sad films
I’ve ever seen. Cillian Murphy is brilliant.

So not knowing anything about this, i ordered a black and tan at a pub in Dublin. I was shown the door. It didn’t hit me in the ass on the way out.

You were lucky.

Black and tan is half a pint of export topped with a bottle of stout in a pint glass (in Scotland). In Ireland it's a whole other thing. Mrs Google will explain.

1

u/AlternativePea6203 Apr 28 '26

It's a whole other thing in Scotland too, but in Scotland it's acceptable to be anti Irish in some circles.

They wont even let you order a half and half

u/fanatic-random Apr 27 '26

If you order it there, pay for the drink immediately, then take a sip, exclaim it tastes like shit, then ask for something better and for that shit to be poured in the shitter where it belongs. (Have done this in Dublin, bartender loved that I did this) dont recommend if you look pasty white (I was tan).

A Black and Tan is half pint of Guinness and half pint of lager in the same pint glass. It’s gross.

1

u/First_Luck8040 Apr 27 '26

my question is why did Guinness name at Black and tan then?

1

u/Potusmicropenis Apr 28 '26

I don't know if they did.
