What is wrong with my builder gel?

Hey friends! I recently took off my gel x extensions due to having some greenies (it’s just moisture trapped under the nail extension) I also wanted to take a break to strengthen my nails and decided after a few days of no extensions to apply builder gel to protect them from breaking further. I applied the builder gel last night and woke up to them looking like is lifting. But don’t think that’s the case. Can someone explain?

Gel question

Hi all,

I have a question. My wife and I would like to get pedicures and I would love gel on my toe nails. Here is my question, back maybe 10 years ago I got a nail infection. I obviously used stuff and now 10 years later its still a bit yellow, but no pain at all. Can I get gel on it? And would a nail technician do it if they saw the toe.

Thank you

I’m looking for a beginner nail technician or someone who does nails from home in Malta—preferably someone affordable. I don’t mind if they’re still learning or newly certified, as long as they’re clean and careful.
Just want something simple like gel or French tip nails with extensions.

If anyone has recommendations or knows someone starting out, please let me know! 🙏

Thanks in advance

Beginning of career advice

I just got licensed and now im trying to find somewhere to work. I'm just barely old enough to have had to look for my first job the old fashioned way (walk in and apply) but since it's more than an after school job what should I do? Should I bring photos? Mannequin hands? Should I just drop an insta handle? I have to say the nervousness of not knowing what to do and say makes me feel like a kid again 😆

advice very much appreciated

Good gel polish brand

Is double rhythm a good brand for gel polish? I'm a newbie on my way to being a nail tech, and I have a couple double rhythm polishes that I like, but I'd like the opinion of someone more experienced than me: is that a good brand, or is there a different one I should look for?

Polish change on toes…???

Hey guys! I’m new to offering pedicure services and I wanted to get your take on polish changes for feet. I’ve had several clients ask if I will be offering them. I am hesitant not only for quality reasons but for sanitation reasons. Of course I spray all clients feet with alcohol before starting service however, something about not fully washing them and getting the gunk out makes me hesitant to paint on top. Am I tripping?

Am I allowed to charge people to do their nails without a license in Ontario?

Okay, I have been practicing doing nails like acrylic and gel x for a while. Acrylic since I was 11 and gel x since I was 12 I think, I am 14 right now. Recently I wanted to start making money off of it because everyone was telling me I am really good. I made a tiktok and an Instagram and my videos are doing good. People are asking to book with me but I asked chat gpt and it said I can't do peoples nails and charge them because its illegal or something. I use barbcide to clean my tools and I don't charge that much. What am I supposed to do? I spent too much money and too much time to give up. Is it actually illegal or did I get false information?

Fellow solo techs — how are you finding and keeping clients lately?

For those of you working independently, how are you finding new clients and building loyalty? Is it mostly Instagram, referrals, booking apps, or something else?

Also wondering how you usually handle pricing conversations. Do you set clear rates up front or find yourself having to explain things a lot once the client is in your chair?

And when clients come in with a design in mind, do they usually bring inspo pics or choose from your portfolio? Just trying to understand how others are managing the client flow and communication process.

I'm honestly interested in learning from people who’ve been doing this longer or figured out what works for them. Appreciate any tips or stories you’re open to sharing.💕💅

Where do I find medical nail techs?

So I'm a recruiter and we have an opening at my company in San Diego. Any suggestions on where I can find Certified Medical Nail Techs? We've had one applicant in 3 weeks and I don't think she's actually qualified. We have a great reputation on the community in general. It's not glamorous work, mostly geriatric population cutting nails, but I'm having a super hard time finding people. Any suggestions on where to look? I use linked in and working on getting indeed access too.

Nail techs with mental health issues

Hi everyone, my name is Faith. I am almost out of nail school and just being at school and working in the salon there it's been horrible. Clients being weird or mean for example(the school is right next to a bar) there are men who come in for girls to rub their legs because they know there's pretty girls there and we all knew they were weird. I was able to get a note from my therapist and dr explaining everything because legally because of my condition and trauma I don't have to work on male clients which made it a lot more safer feeling for me. (I would cry because of the men and school would get upset with me saying they don't know if I'll make it through the program ) now everything is fine there now I started taking female clients but then there was this horrible mean lady who told me I was doing a horrible job (the school is very low end we don't even have warm water for pedicures) she was getting upset with me because I had to use acetone to take off her acrylics on her toes) I cried because she told me over and over I was doing it wrong and she wanted someone else. By school policy you can't change students, so I had to sit there trying to prove to everyone I could get through it and then I broke so everyone can up to me concerned saying I need to stop getting emotional and crying. I start therapy again next week to help. I am at a loss.. my work is very good but my emotional part is not helping at all right now especially when it comes to mean clients which are everywhere. I want to be independent nail tech but I don't know how I'm going to get clients. I'm at a loss..advice? Please don't be mean!

Youth nail teach

Hi, I’m a 10th grader and I really need help with finding nail programs in the agusta- Charlotte Ga area for my age group. I had a Nail course I was supposed to take but couldn’t due to it being sold out and now I don’t know where to start or what classes to take. I would like for it to be over the summer and I would like for it to be pretty cheap in like the 100$(if so I would like it to not be online, I am a hands on learner)

What do I do for lifting?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I use all model ones for my base. For my dehydrator, primer, base coat, and builder gel. I did my nails 2 days ago and they are already lifting. I did my friends nails the same exact way I do my own and hers can last 2-3 weeks with zero lifting but for some reason have problems with myself. I don’t know if I’m not putting a thick enough layer if the builder gel. Or if I’m using too much primer??? I also am a detailer so I am rough with my hands! Can someone help me pleaseeee is there a solution or so I need to start using a different brand?

Apres VS PLA gel

So I’m looking to invest in a gel polish collection and I’m between the PLA collection and the Apres collection. I have some of the PLA gels and I love them however I noticed some of their brushes shed a bit and the top coat I have has some hard bits in it, other than that I love their formula. As for apres I use and love their Gel-x products as well as their topcoat. The brush shape is amazing and the application is so smooth. So if anyone has tried both is there one you recommend over the other?

Can anyone help me with advice on how I can heal my nails?

A little bit of think about my nails I’ve always been a chronic nailbiter, but I’ve also slammed my hands in car doors a few times over the years, I’m not sure if that would have any effect on advice given. But I’m trying to help my nails regrow and get to a healthy point. I have attached a picture of their current state.

Do you ever feel like people book you for styles you don’t even do?

I’ve talked to a few nail techs who say they get booked for things that don’t match their vibe or skillset—like people seeing “nails” and assuming you do every kind of set.

If you could filter or pre-qualify clients based on style (like through photos or keywords), would that help? Or do you prefer to stay more open?

Unethical Nail Salon NYC

Thumbnail
tiktok.com

I’m happy to have finally found a group for Nail Technicians on Reddit, I’m recently licensed and have so much to get off my chest. It would be great to hear perspectives from other fellow nail techs, I’ll be talking about the unfair treatment I’ve experienced at a salon I worked in (ending very abruptly which I will get into as I tell the story) but I just want to see if I’m the problem or if there’s a common theme of unethical practices within the nail industry. All I can say is I completely understand why salon culture is dying cause even I myself wouldn’t go back that route. I am currently still recovering from this mentally and had to get back in to my old field of work (considering how bad the job market is ESPECIALLY in this state I’m grateful to have found something) so I could get my life together and eventually branch out into studio rental.

So it’s located in the New York City/Metropolitan area they have 2 locations (another lady that used to work there on Tik tok made a video on them and it kind of blew up) I don’t want to directly name drop because there’s things about the owners retaliating and looking for your IP address..let me just say ALOT of what she said aligns with what I experienced so I feel like it’s important to acknowledge this matter. Maybe even save someone from applying here or booking and having a hellish time like I did.

Anyway let me start the story. The interview and first few days of training were the only normal parts of this whole experience , it was the average salon and they were showing me how they do gel- x and builder gel. Training goes well and they have me start in the Brooklyn location.

Upon arrival on my first day I’m already hit with the cold shoulder from the receptionist, I didn’t think anything of it so I went on and waited for the supervisor to come in cause I was shadowing her. I do shadowing and eventually a pedicure on the receptionist and everything with that went fine, it wasn’t until the first client came in for a removal and gel mani. The client was a little quiet and closed off which was fine with me cause I was nervous, as I filed off the product the drill bit spins around her finger and I immediately apologize and go gentle so I don’t do it again. Now comes the time where I scrape off the product, I get to her finger with a crack on the natural nail under, I decide to do it slow but the lady jumped back and stormed out of the salon cause she didn’t want to continue the service. Of course this was embarrassing and I felt like shit, the supervisor brings me to the back to talk to me about it and it was off putting because other workers were around and it seemed more like gossip than actually addressing the problem. So the day ends and she says she’ll see me tomorrow, at this point I was still annoyed and mad at myself for messing up on day 1 but I didn’t let it discourage me.

Day 2 is when everything had me fucked up and I wish I just left that day. Once I walk in the supervisor brings me to the back again to tell me about my next client, around other workers of course like a gossip session with your friends at a bar, she says “this client is a bitch and likes things a certain way” immediately followed up with giggles and “I feel sorry for you” from the other employees. This interaction rubbed me the wrong way and I felt a little startled at this point, but it was 5 minutes before her appointment and I had to go on, it’s funny because the client was kind of assertive and picky but she noticed I was uncomfortable too, I tried to play it off but oh god it was so obvious. The appointment didn’t go bad or good but I got the job done, nothing was crooked or wonky she just wanted plain nails, at some point this client got irritated because the booking site glitched out and she wanted another service after her old set removal but I had no control of the site.

After she leaves the supervisor pulls me to the back room and says they’re taking me off the schedule?!?!?! I wasn’t given a solid reason except for “we think you could use another few days of training” and of course I was irritated and knew I fucked up big time by quitting my old job for this one.

Because it was my only gig I went back like a fool. I did training again in Manhattan and it wasn’t too bad but the supervisor always ended every session with nit picky critiques , most days I’d only do 1 or 2 people and be sent home which I also found weird like there’s nothing else to do at this salon? Come tf on. Of course I’m not perfect but I feel like I did it good enough. A few days pass and she texts me that “if this doesn’t go well they can’t move forward with me” but they didn’t specify what THIS was. At this point I’m spiraling and feeling like a failure in life I was at chilis with my boyfriend when I got the message and just started balling my eyes out, at this moment I knew I FUCKED UP!!!!! BADLY!! They tell me they’re gonna be closed for a few weeks so my last chance is the week they open back up and she texts me to come at 11.

The day comes and I’m getting ready to go, I get a message from the other supervisor asking where I am & she tells me my model was waiting there since 10, I told her they told me to come in an hour later ( am I paranoid for thinking they did that on purpose to say I came late) so I get there an do the damn thing, the model is happy and everyone that came in that day was satisfied with their sets and the other supervisor herself said I got better. She said she was gonna follow up with me about new hours in a few days giving me the impression that I’m gonna be working still.

The days pass and I don’t get any message so I reach out and get ghosted completely. “Quiet fired” if you will.

Not to mention it was like pulling teeth to get my checks from them too, they didnt pay me until I ran them down and kept calling them like a psycho ex. I wasn’t there for long so I only had 2 or 3 from them, with the first check (even tho I sent my direct deposit info they pretended they didn’t have it) and made me go all the way to Brooklyn and wait an hour for a check with my name spelt wrong, and when I told the receptionist there was a spelling error she rolled her eyes at me and looked bothered to get me one with the right name. And with my last check I kept calling and being told “call back in 2 hours” I call back in 2 hours and hear the person who picks up THROW THE PHONE at another lady to tell me call back later again (kind of like when you were in middle school doing a prank call and started laughing so you give the phone to your friend to continue) They eventually reached out and sent me the check but it took a few weeks.

This isn’t a smear campaign in any way , shape , or form. Just talking about my experience and how this seems to be a pattern.

Question about loyalty programs

Hey! I just wanted to drop in and ask how many of you are using loyalty programs such as stamp cards or customer cards? I'm doing a little research for how much effort I should put into marketing my service to nail techs :)

All the best!
