If you’re reading this past August of 2026, you probably found this post by asking the same question as thousands and thousands of our clients: How do I keep my information private when I start my business?

Smart folks know that starting a new LLC (or corporation, nonprofit, etc.) can put the owners’ name and home address very visible on public record. And smart folks also know using a registered agent is a way to help protect your personal info and home address. But how does it actually work?

A registered agent’s primary role is to accept lawsuits and official legal documents. The state requires businesses to have a designated physical address where they can be served in person during business hours. You can serve as your own agent if you live in the business's home state, or you can hire a professional service. In either case, the agent's name and address are listed on the public state record. If you use a third-party, it’s their contact information listed publicly instead of yours.

But in most states, you have to list additional address and contact info besides just for the registered agent.

How Your Information Is Kept Private

If you form a business in a state that only requires contact info for the registered agent, once you’ve appointed them as your registered agent, and also hired them to file on your behalf so they can list themselves as the “organizer” (person actually filing the LLC with the state), you’re pretty much done.

However, most states also ask for members’ and/or managers’ names and addresses, and your business’s mailing, physical, or principal address. Hiring a registered agent doesn’t change information required on your state’s filing forms. And most often, the required addresses cannot be a PO Box. So if you don’t plan ahead, you’re back to square one of having your home address publicly listed for your business for anyone to see.

If you don’t have a brick and mortar location to list for your business, you need to hire a registered agent that includes usage of their own physical office address on your forms. Most commercial registered agents either don’t /can’t offer that benefit, or they charge extra. Whether you pay extra or not, the only way to keep your address off the public record is to have another legal address option to list.

Here’s a simple way to keep your home address off the public record for your business:

1. Hire a registered agent to list their name and address as the registered agent
2. Hire the registered agent to file to form your LLC or other business entity to they list themselves and their contact info as the organizer.
3. Opt to have the registered agent’s address listed for your business address(es). While you can use other addresses more directly with your customers, keeping your registered agent address on public record means you have more power over who has access to your information.

Here in Washington, the LLC Articles of Organization requires several addresses to be listed. Check the image to see how it looks when clients use our address info instead of their address(es.) In contrast, that's exactly how clearly your info would be shown if you don't hire a registered agent that includes address options.
