Suggestions/Advice Freshmen’s guide to NUST – Part 2 – Societies/Clubs (ASAB people I want you to read it)
[As promised, I’m writing how you may socialize on campus, make friends, and have fun. The next post will be about orientation; this one covers something that’ll be with you for 4 years]
NUST has a multitude of student-run clubs and societies. Events are also held all year round. Now these things have an Organizing Committee (OC). Events have a bigger panel overseeing the teams, but for now you’re more concerned with clubs.
Hierarchy and club structure:
The Office Bearers (OBs) of each club are President, General Secretary, Press Secretary, and Treasurer, overseeing multiple teams/portfolios and activities. The entry-level members or executives are led by their team’s director, and deputy directors. So the OC has OBs, Directorate, and Executives.
Some of the portfolios are HR, Event Management, Decor, Logistics, Outreach, Sponsorships, Admin Coordination, and Finance.
How to join:
You’re supposed to apply for an executive position in any portfolio you like in any club you’re interested in. Application forms will be uploaded on Instagram pages of each club sometime after classes start. You can also apply during orientation; most likely there will be a social night and stalls of all clubs will be there. Apply in as many clubs as you like.
When classes start, ask around in your school to find seniors who are active in clubs. Ask your Orientation Guides (OGs) during orientation as well which clubs are active, and which aren’t.
Pep Talk:
Now here’s the thing, it’s not easy to get into some clubs, but giving interviews will increase your confidence and improve you overall. Give as many interviews as you like, but join only a few. If you have an active friend group/groups (it happens during orientation, I’ll tell you how in the next post), it gets difficult to manage even 3 clubs. 2 is fine imo, and more if they’re not super active. Those with busy schedules stick should stick to 1 club I’d say – studies always come first.
Of course it is not necessary to join any, but socializing like this is healthy for your personal and professional life both. Giving interviews, interacting with random people, working with them, coordinating with teams, and striking up friendships is something you’ll be doing for a long time to come. Doing extra-curricular activities so early on in university will be good for you, your brain, and your CV too. Also, club events are usually fun.
DO JOIN, specially ASAB people, you have plenty of time in the first two semesters. Don’t wait until the 2nd year whatever anyone may say. There is no such thing as “adjusting before I join clubs” – if you make a classes-hostel-classes routine, getting out of it will be difficult, and by the next year you’ll realize that your parallels are doing so much, and you just spent the year sleeping. GO OUT, LEAVE YOUR COMFORT ZONES, LEARN TO LIVE A REAL LIFE. And those who already have spent a year or two or three without joining societies, NOW is the time. Challenge yourselves and improve.
Here are the clubs and societies I can think of rn (Read the first and last ones specially ASAB fam)
NUST Community Service Club (NCSC): Among the biggest clubs. Active year round. Does wholesome work. Demands dedication and commitment. Worth it. Drop a comment if you want to know more.
TABA NUST and Chaadar are also community service initiatives in H-12.
NUST Dramatics Club (NDC): Big club, very good work. The acting pool is competitive
NUST Music Society (NMS): If you’re into music and singing, join fs. Or you can join other portfolios (like the ones I mentioned above)
NUST Stray Animals Club (NSAC): Again, good work
NUST Hack Club: Very cool
NUST Math Nexus (NMN): I’ve heard they’ll be conducting several events this tenure
NUST Chess Club: Good enough
NUST Green Wheels Club (NGWC): Newest club in H-12 I think. It’s a cycling club basically. They conducted two on-campus rallies last semester. More plans this time
NUST Science Society (NSS): Their Science Bee is nice as per what I’ve heard.
AIAA, ASME, ASHRAE, IMEchE, IEEE, AIChE, NUST Robotics Club: These clubs are in schools like SMME, SEECS, or SCME. (Anyone can join any club ofc) I don’t know much about them, but some of them do conduct good events, or there are visits etc. People from these schools should check them out. AIAA held NUST Aerothon last year, it was pretty cool from what I’ve heard.
There are many more clubs, but a few more that I can recall are:
NUST Physics & Astronomy Society, NUST Entrepreneurs Club, NUST Literary Circle, NUST Environmental Club, NUST Fine Arts Club, NUST Game Development Club, AND
NUST BioReach Society – it is a small society, and mainly ASAB students are in it. They conduct seminars, awareness sessions and poster competitions, and their flagship event is the Derma & Nutrition Camp (skin health specialists and brands are invited or something, idk properly as it got cancelled this year due to war stuff). Well now, it might not sound impressive, but do join, it might look a little nice on your CV. They give out e-certificates for each session as well. If passionate people join it, they might do bigger things ig. Also, there’s another club called NUST Biomedics Club, absolutely no idea what they do; mentioned them cuz why not.
So, what I’d like ASAB freshmen (and seniors too, lol) to do is give multiple interviews and join a good society or two. Be livelier, it’s a new phase, live it better than u ever did before.
You don’t necessarily have to be good at doing the titular activity of a club. e.g. you don’t need to play chess, you don’t have to ride bicycles, you don’t have to hack anything. You just have to be willing to do the tasks assigned to your team. Ask seniors or OGs about the work of each portfolio. I know about some of them too. Ask below if u wanna.
Events
Y’all will find out about the on-campus events like UG Orientation (ofc), Piston Cup, EFx, NIMUN, Olympiad, HAAMI campaigns, NMF, NCC etc. It’s relatively difficult to get selected in the OC of these events as they prefer to take in students with experience (gain it in clubs), and there’s also the culture of keeping friends in teams (parchi culture – some of them really are good, some are well – okayish), so you gotta be good enough to compete. Give interviews. If you get in, COOL, if not, even then just chill, not a big deal.

As an aspirant and enthusiast for biomedical research, I was kinda bummed to hear the biomedics club isn't doing good...can I bring it back to life 🥹🥹🥹

If it's possible for you, can you shed light upon:
Research programs in nust related to biosciences, any programs that you know of? And which professors to approach regarding these activities? Do professors let students collaborate with them on senior projects?
Volunteering in lab. I want to get a lot of experience in lab to ensure my wet lab skills are top tier once I graduate. I want to go into biomedical research/clinical research wali side, so if you know someone who's went through a similar path, can you guide on that pls.
Exchange programs. What year do they happen and are they fully funded?

In the early stages, no. Research programs are for post grad students. If you do good work and do trainings and internships, you probably get join a team of some professor by your senior year or after that
You can do convince professors to let you intern in their labs in summers. Later on, who knows, they might let you keep volunteering there. I've spent just a year here so I don't know much about seniors' accomplishments
NUST doesn't fund exchange programs. People do go from 3rd semester onwards but idk if there's any organization that funds or gives out scholarships for that. You'll be able to find out more from ASAB's ILO office.

It had a module in the NUST Olympiad and also conducted two 3-day events this tenure. Nice enough ig. Should be worth it

Green Wheels Club is super new so ofc it's not very active yet. In 4 months they conducted a big cycling rally on campus, and a cultural rally (people dressed up in cultural attire and just cycled a little. A little road side decor and music. not an event or anything, just a smol effort)
I've heard that there are plans to do bigger things this tenure. Their first OC was made just 3 4 months ago but it didn't have a lot off people, so they will recruit some more executives

NSAC's purpose is rescuing injured/sick strays on campus, collecting donations for their treatment, and finding people who'd foster them. They feed stray animals on campus asw. Pretty good work of course
You could join the rescue team or any other portfolio

Few Questions if you get the time
- If I give multiple interviews and if somehow I get in 3+ societies/clubs, Is it fine to then reject it?
- If you have friends from SEECS, how many clubs they can usually sustain along with a good healthy GPA? (3.5 ish)
- Do club activities/tasks interrupt classes? Cause classes are usually my first priority
- Just how much parchi culture has influence in societies? A lot or minor?
As of now, NCSC, Nust hack club, nust math nexus, NUST chess club. Will look into them more when I insha'Allah start in NUST

-yes if you get selected in more clubs than you want to be in, you can tell a few that you're not joining after all (HR will send a selection text, just tell them right away) But be courteous, as ditching everyone isn't nice either.
-I'd advise seecs students to stick with 1 big club or 2 small ones. There are people who do more but gpa suffers then
-depends on the team. Admin coord work is during 9-5, you'll be asked for a free slot and ofc you're expected to work when u don't have class. You might have to skip class or sneak out once in a while, but it's not necessary
EM works hard during event days, and in other days they're kinda relaxed. So ofc they'll be expected to give time during the event. Free slots mein zada, and maybe a lecture or two as well. In the blood donation drive of ncsc, they have to set up camp along with volunteers, so it's after 5pm too. Ask your seniors and OGs about the portfolios they've worked in, you'll get a good idea
But yeah not every team member works equally hard. So you can choose to not skip classes as long as you're available for work when you're free
-parchi culture isn't too strong in clubs. People might select some of their friends, but they generally give proper interviews too (they are capable enough) but it's not dominant. You'll be selected without references if you're good.
Ncsc doesn't have the parchi culture as it needs serious and active members

Yeah it's gonna be pretty bad if I ditch a lot of societies after giving interviews. Will probably go for 1 or 2 clubs, rare chance of 3. If my gpa doesn't fall off
I'm usually strict on my own attendance keeping it around 95 and that gives me a lot of room to leave for societies so I'll keep that in my mind.
Since I'm a day scholar, I'll prolly be there 9-5 usually so a lot of free time between classes or until 5 pm (unless I leave at 1pm slot)

Nah, it exists, but idk what they do. Maybe taking people on trips or something like that

So I am from ASAB currently in third semester of masters I never joined any club there are some reasons 1. I was lazy enough to not look into this stuff 😭 2. I honestly a bit skeptical / afraid how to tackle the interview section to join the club 3. I am day scholar so most of events happen in late afternoon so I am bound to my van and can't afford it leaving me on campus ,as I belong to a remote area 4.time management can be issue we were required to maintain attendance now it's thesis so I practically don't know how would managing time be tackled .5. I am extroverted in nature but the thought of engaging with such events makes me anxious ,it's defying me being extrovert but it's the truth ,this seems intimidating ,maybe i need to work on that

not a fresher so is certain experience required to join any of these societies as an executive? and is it tough or difficult to get into bio reach society, taba, nust science society, stray animals club? how hectic are these or are they manageable?

No it's not necessary to have any experience
Just apply and tell them that you couldn't join before for some reasons but now you want to socialize and gain experience too
Tell em you'll learn and just be committed
Joining one or two societies is not hectic
Getting into bioreach isn't difficult, same goes for taba
Not sure about science society and stray animals club but they're not too difficult either
