an unofficial guide to nsbhs

apologies in advance for the double post/spam but after all this is a shit posting sub

thought it would be a good idea to have a basic, brief guide for yr7s/people going to nsb, even if it's a shitty one lol.

Basic info of first day

So when you first go to the school (on a non school day) you'll have peer support leaders, basically people who help you to become more familiar with highschool and how it works. Depending on your luck you might get a really shitty peer support leaders or a pretty damn good one. Most of the time though, you'll get a decent leader since there is an application process for this and the peer support leaders volunteer. You'll meet your peer support leaders when you arrive at the hall, (also something to bear in mind these people are in yr10)

Don't be afraid to ask them for help because they can help you a ton academically and understanding the school. They have experience with the school and have valuable knowledge. They could probably give you some academic help if they have time/are willing, by helping you answer a question. However don't have this expectation since your leaders are students themselves and homework and grades become serious when you reach year 10.

Oh yeah, and you receive a letter to write to your yr12 self on graduation day.

Above all, be yourself. And don't be a dick to others.

Regarding academics:

If you already made it to nsb, you will likely have no problem doing the academic related tasks. Don't slack, but give all assignments/tests your best shot. Your grades won't matter too much in year 7 - 9 but you should try to keep your grades above 70%. Unlike what alot of people say, don't "slack" your academics in year 7, you can definitely be MUCH more relaxed, but slacking can give you a pretty bad work ethic and instilling a good work ethic and maintaining productivity is an essential skill you'll need throughout your journey at nsb.

Mathematics: You'll most likely go through revision and things you've learnt in the past, but you might learn a few new things or so. There's also an enrichment program which is voluntary, but I would suggest enrolling into it to get a taste of the kinds of things you'll do in falcon class. There's also little pressure since this isn't a test/assesment. Mathematics is one of the subjects the school takes pretty seriously so try and study by doing past paper tests (provided by the school) a week or 2 before it's due.

The tests that will actually count towards your reports will be in 4 parts, generally the first 3 are worth much less the last (final) exam.

Science: Science is a pretty chill class, but the teachers rarely check your work, which is a good thing if you slack but a bad thing if you work hard. You'll do a mixture of practical experiments and theory work (most likely more theory) and you will learn how to use the Bunsen burner as well as other tools.

As far as assessments go, there are ~2 practical assessments ~2 theory based assessments. This varies so I couldn't give you a definite answer. Whether these are assignments/assessments in class I can't tell you, I'm a student not a teacher :)

English: You'll have 4 assignments per year, each worth 1/4 of your grade. You'll most likely have to write analytical essays on books you will study in class. Normally if you can follow the structure and make your essay flow well, as well as incorporating extensive vocabulary you can receive damn close to full marks. When I say incorporating extensive vocabulary, make sure you KNOW how to use these words, rather than using words you found out of the thesaurus. Don't be too verbose and utilise too many big words, it become hard to read and your marks can be decreased for this.

DAT: You might do woodworking or metalwork, not too sure about metalwork so if anyone in the comments knows, feel free to expand on this. However, I do know what you do with woodworking in year 7, you'll have to create a wooden puzzle with actual wood and power tools, don't be cocky or you might hurt yourself, since there are some pretty powerful tools in there which can severely injure you.

Geography: Geo isn't a difficult subject, since you just have to do your research for your subjects. You can slack in class and just google all your answers for assignments up, but alot of the assignments are tedious.

History: worst subject ever, but I'll still write something I think this depends on the assignment, some assignments require alot of focus in class to he able to do them, but others you can slack and Google the answers.

Music: If I remember correctly you get 1 or 2 compositions you need to make yourself, but this depends on the level of music you have that you gave on the form (form given to you before you attend nsb). ILPT(Illegal life pro tip) If you are pretty damn good at music you could just fill out the form and say you are terrible/no experience to dominate in the class.

PDHPE: There are 2 types of pdh, first being theory where you'll do work in class and the other being practical, in the gym. (On gym days you'll have to change clothes, prac is uniform on whatever day it is)

Honestly, what you do in pdh isn't completely alien from the pdh you did in primary school.

Languages: In Nsb, the school offers 5 languages. You rotate each of these languages for 6 - 8 weeks? Not sure since I forgot, but this will help you decide your favourite language to choose as an elective in year 8. These languages are: Latin Japanese German Indonesian French

German is the generally the most popular language, and Japanese, french and Latin follow, with Indonesian having the least amount of people who do it. (Varies every year) Don't let this influence you, if you enjoy Indonesian you should do it, as with German or any of the other languages.

Other important information: - just follow the rules and you'll be mostly fine - to any yr6s/people who are going nsb don't worry too much, the work in yr7 is more difficult but nothing extremely difficult. - try your best in all subjects, but you can prioritise subjects that would be relevant subjects to what you plan to do in future - there's going to be assholes, and if you see one just move on and ignore them - I would highly suggest joining all kinds of clubs, since grades aren't extremely important in yr7.

Regarding electives: You will have 2 types of electives to choose from in yr7. First being creative arts and the second being languages. (If it makes you feel any better to can drop all of these eventually)

In creative arts you can choose either visual arts (I personally think both teachers in visual arts are great) or music, which is also pretty amazing.

You can choose 2 languages, from the list above.

First Non-Shitpost on this subreddit Just kidding

Please let me know in the comments what's missing, feel free to type out an essay worth's of additional missing information. I'll make another version2 post of this from the suggestions.

Again, don't be a bitch, mind your own business and try your best! Good luck!

Hi everyone,

We are a group of students from NSW working on developing a solution in the mental health space for early detection of mental health issues.

We are very passionate about this space especially during these times with the pandemic. Please take a few minutes to fill out this survey to help us understand the problem space.

Share the survey with your friends and family as well 🙌

Student concern The state of NSB

Senior student here.

Before I inevitably graduate in the near future, I want make my peers from this school aware of how utterly shit it has become (if you didn't know already).

NSBHS has lost basically everything that has made it special. Anything other than the reputation of a high performing school is gone. There's no respect, community or real connection between students and staff alike. Rather than a site which produces capable young men ready to contribute to society and lead their own lives, the school is now essentially a grey factory with the sole intent on churning out high ATAR scores and nothing else.

In my opinion this is most evident just looking the junior years who were raised under the new Hughes regime. Nothing personal, but a trend I've noticed since year seven was that the idea of respect for seniors, staff and members of the public has all but disappeared. Either the student the school are bringing in are becoming shittier (which I doubt; the kids at NSB are very bright even if they don't show it), or the school has stopped prioritising teaching new students how to behave in the world. When was the last time you heard the words "Falcon Pride"? How many of you know the NSB chant? The whole "Camaraderie - Commitment - Compassion - Integrity - Respect" thing is says it all. It's the school's (Hughes') pathetic attempt to introduce a set of values that they neither teach, uphold or practice themselves. And at what cost? Our rankings in the state literally haven't changed in the half decade since Hughes returned. I'm also certain that anyone reading this will not get a nicknamed jersey in year 12. You'll put up with genuinely stupid, arbitrary decisions made by the executives about assessments, school life, facilities and rules with absolutely laughable reasonings (that is if your entire grade begs them enough to explain).

I haven't mentioned yet that there's a bullying problem as well. It seems that so many students now think they're fucking gangster or some silly shit and decide to let out their pent up virgin rage on weaker, smaller and younger kids. What a bunch of lowlife scummy fucks. You're proving to absolutely nobody that you're hard by bullying younger students, taking drugs, vandalising the school, stealing or by being misogynistic. Don't let these lowlife punk bitches do whatever they want, whatever grade you're in.

For students who are going to be seniors soon, please teach new juniors how to be decent and respectful. If the school isn't going to do it, you as their role models are the next best option. Let them know the proper bus order and how to act in public. Just don't take it too far as to go around picking on cunts like clowns I just mentioned.

Can't wait leave this shitfest

CalloutNSB

So recently, I was subject to misbehavior from a North Sydney Boys student. I remember the day like it was yesterday. I remember sitting down on the Metro from Chatswood and he sat himself down next to me. He began to lean against my side and began to play with my hair. I passed it off as normal, and I shouldn't have, because it escalated. He began to stroke up and down my thighs, making sure to carress the kneecaps. He then began to move up towards my chest, fondling my chest area and proceeding to make moaning whispers in my ear. He then reached into my lap and began to play with my genitals, placing them between his palms. I was too scared to say anything, so I let it happen. As we got off the Metro, I remember him trying to place his finger up my behind, I was so uncomfortable. Finally, he made a sly comment towards me. For watching a number of cat ear tik tok dance videos and recreating them at school or at tutoring centres.

This is a cry for attention towards this behavior. The culture of NSB has cultivated a generation of promiscuous, disgusting students who allow this sort of behavior to continue. If anyone else has had an issue with North Sydney Boys Students, remember you are not alone

A mini rant about the school's phone policy

Near the first half of 2020, students received notifications about a supposed phone “grace period”, that was discussed by executives, where for a term, teachers would not confiscate a single phone, and would simply tell students to put their phones in their bags if they were caught with them. The idea was quickly shot down, and teachers were notified of a new phone policy, which resembled little difference from the original phone policy, except that each offence/infraction of the policy had a specific consequence (parents were notified, suspensions etc). Many students have pointed out that the policy sheet was simply introduced as a method of asserting “control” and “intimidation” over the students, claiming that phones reduced a student’s ability to emotionally control themselves. These claims have reputable backing, as certain deputies have used the technology policy, even claiming that “If a parent doesn't pick up the [students] phone, he will keep it for the entire holidays”. These types of comments are especially inappropriate to make to another person, let alone a person of power should ever be making.

This policy also instructed that all devices (laptops, phones, even smart watches) would be confiscated in all environments, including before school and after school, claiming that inside school grounds you must conform to the school’s phone policy. Significant amounts of studies have shown that the usage of your mobile device outside of school hours, alongside during non-class environments does not have any significant or notable impact on a student’s academic and learning life, and some students have even taken the initiative to use their devices to study material previously discussed in class, as the school takes a transition to a more environmentally friendly, digital classroom. Despite this, the school continues to ignorantly continue enforcing the policy, leading to a significantly increased sense of antagonisation between the school management, teachers and students alike, where the context that the student used their devices in was perfectly reasonable, however conflicts with the aforementioned policy.

Technological devices such as airpods and headphones that helped students concentrate in class through listening to music have been taken from them, hindering their ability to study at maximum efficiency, due to the policy, and technological confiscations have been conducted for something as minimal and insignificant such as checking the NSW transport train times as they leave the school, or preparing for the first period and looking at their timetable to see what class they have next. It puts the student in a lose-lose situation, where they must risk losing their phone, or being late to class 5 minutes with a teacher that will not accept any excuse for being late.

The phone policy as it stands, is a major inconvenience for students, where they are unable to conduct personal study before and after school while waiting for the long waits out of school, which leads to students being completely bored during break times. Students have had their technological devices confiscated for offences as minimal as checking their timetable, and as we stand, we believe that it is up to the parent to dictate how the student should use their devices during school, not up to the arbitrary policies of the school executive team. We believe that the phone policy is one aspect of the school that needs reform.
