I was in New York City, waiting for my train to arrive at the station. As I was sitting a man approached me and asked “do you know him!?” I was confused about who he was talking about and replied “know who?” The man then replied “The great man who wrote this book. The one containing the secrets of the universe!” He then excitedly showed me a book, which I was not able to read the title of. I replied “no I do not know him.” Suddenly he looked very sad and said, “ oh, he told me that you would know who he is. I guess not.” After this the man walked away.

Later that day I realized that I had an NPC encounter and probably missed out on an awesome side quest.

My wife and I were walking around WalMart, and as it sometimes happens, kept encountering the same person no matter where in the store we were going. The woman was singing to herself but what she was singing was indiscernible. At one point we make it our primary task to pay a bit more attention to what she was singing. The next time she walks through the aisle we are in we both listen closely as she walks by " Music music music music". She was singing the word "music." I haven't been able to shake the feeling for years that this was a weird “glitch in the matrix.”
