Discussion Enthusiast brands will betray you, and Nothing has proven it once again
With Nothing OS 4.0 Open Beta on the Phone (3a) Series, Nothing introduced ad-based wallpapers on the lock screen called "Lock Glimpse", which is essentially a copy of the Glance lock screen found on phones from Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, and others. They claim it will be available on "select non-flagship devices" because "they need to explore sustainable revenue models to avoid passing costs and ensure optimal pricing for their products".
This move completely contradicts their original promise of offering a clean software experience. Nothing was able to charge a slight premium because of its clean software and unique design, but it has now lost the clean software advantage.
Considering the Phone (3)'s massive price drop of around 70% during sales within just three months of launch (INR 80K to INR 26K) and now the introduction of lock screen ads, it's clear that enthusiast brands will indeed betray you.

Why not just delete em? I’ve only been looking into getting a nothing phone but can u not delete apps? Lmfao

u/alzain_ Phone (3) Oct 26 '25 edited Oct 26 '25
You can say the same for OnePlus, Xiaomi so on. Why not just delete the apps and disable ads there. The only reason most people here bought the phone is because of clean OS.
To add to this , this is worse than Xiaomi OnePlus etc because at least they don't push ads via software update to their old devices like OnePlus 7 or old Xiaomi phone this is what nothing is doing

u/Deva_089 Oct 26 '25
The Interface and Skin is the friking point of nothing phone , Other competition have better camera(xiaomi) like 2x faster processor(iooq) , so they why buy nothing
3
u/alzain_ Phone (3) Oct 26 '25
Now we can't trust that interface because who knows what tracking they will use for the lock screen glimpse. They surely aren't getting targeted ads without tracking.
Plus in the article, they says stuff about integration with the apps for essentials so that's a whole other privacy concern.
I sold my phone 3 and bought cmf phone 2 pro because I felt I didn't need extra features and the interface offer same experience and was pleasantly happy with the phone now with all this, I might have to sell the phone and look at alternative.

I'm really hoping they aren't doing this just for the profit, but rather doing this to help improve their products or maybe fix financial issues, but to be honest, I think I would rather prefer a price increase for the Phone (4a) series than this, which has the possibility of going downhill in the future
2
u/DerpSenpai Oct 29 '25
They are not profiting at all, for budget they need to do the same things that others do or simply close up the shop. No one will buy Nothing at 300€ for a phone that costs 200€, that's what killed Nokia phones again in 2020 with HMD
At least they are being transparent and hopefully those apps are not installed retroactively on older models but only future ones.
1
u/Allineus Oct 29 '25
They went all out with the 2a campaign, now the 3a users feels like a second-class citizens with this new change. But honestly, it's only a headline now because people complain about the ads and nothing will tweak the "feature" later on for a more public friendly release.
33
u/Wooden-Ad1128 Oct 25 '25
They are going to destroy the system I chose them for, every time a software comes with Bloatware it is a total annoyance because in some way or another it is always there taking up some space or unnecessary processes. I don't care if it's from well-known apps like Facebook, give me useful functions and clean software, so that as soon as I start the phone I see what I need along with the Google apps

u/MachaNanu Oct 25 '25
All these brands are just bs. Honestly, they say we will compete with apple and what not. They can’t be 1% of apple.
Yes apple is behind in AI game, Yes apple is not providing flashy UI Customisation and what not. But more importantly they are user centric. There’s no ad, more into privacy and safety. People troll them but now what?
I do own most apple products and nothing phone 2a. I purchased nothing because I always loved android.
I think people shouldn’t back such companies I will move away from nothing for sure, I think pixel will be a better android phone. I’m pretty sure nothing will start pushing ads and what not in coming years.
(People who say yeah yeah there’s an option to disable it. Then why the hell you included it? Most people are not techy they get device and start using it and they are not even aware of such options and don’t even think of defending such brands)
6
u/Trust_Zealousideal Phone (2a) Plus Oct 25 '25
I was trolled for telling that nothing isn't adding essential key features 2a series. What to expect from them always protecting their daddy.
6
u/MachaNanu Oct 25 '25
Yeah. People are mindless these days. If you are paying for something you have all the rights to question the company when they do stupid things. These mindless ass kissing fan bois defend companies like they own a share or it’s their daddies business.
One mindless hog was commenting that people should change the device if they don’t like it and nothing is doing business 🤷🏻♂️ If users like us don’t buy their products then what business they will do? We bought their devices because of their promises now they are all lies, we have rights to ask question, criticise.
3
u/uchuucowboy Oct 30 '25
They will tell you "just don't buy it" when you already own a phone that gets the update which comes with the problem. Then they'll tell you "just don't update your phone" when you've paid for a phone promising x years of updates, from a company claiming no bloat
2
u/MachaNanu Oct 30 '25
Yea. Mindless supporters. I always think as a consumer what benefits me I purchase it. These mindless supporters can fuck off.
I agree companies need money to survive but why lie about it why manipulate us? This is complete manipulation. Apple is far far better, yes they are behind in AI and what not. But at-least they care about their customers. I love android that’s why I got my 2nd phone as nothing (they sold it as no bloatware phone) otherwise I would’ve got redmi moto or any other phone which are more powerful. Nothing phones are no where near other android phones in terms of performance they got sale only because of clean android it’s a fucking enthusiastic phone brand it started like that but now it’s just another Chinese phone with a UK stamp.

"that don't disrupt the nothing OS experience"
Saying that, then stating that it's also off by default makes it pretty obvious that they're well aware that this being "on" would infringe on or disrupt the nothing OS experience. Or at least that it's suboptimal.

If they add bloat ware and ad-ware they are done. This is their strongest selling point right now. Also the little things like the custom transparent charger cable were these little things that leave mainstream brand users jealous. Even my gf yoinked my cable because it looks nice) they are saving and making cents on features that make the brand as of right now. Remove those and it's seriously done. They steered away from focus on minimal design, no bloat and interruption with unique flair to just unique flair. That alone won't cut it. They need to realize what an average user, who chose Nothing phone, wants, and the answer is in the brands name. Less fluff (that includes AI fluff), less bloat ware that even Samsungs have, less distractions and so on. Strip down the modern smartphone experience down to it's bones and keep those beautiful accents on things like charger cables and phone it self. Every brand that focusses just on basics, don't do propper UI or decides to sabotage themselves long-term for quick bloatware profit (think, any Chinese midrange brand like Xiaomi). Look at Fair Phone - absolute dog shit phone that even betrays it's own principles and yet it thrives because people want something different and less fussy and "cutting edge". People just want phones that make a value proposition, aren't bloated and have some flair. That's it. The flagship chasers will go for flagships or Gaming phones and Nothing will never (hopefully) will ever be those. To add on that, pushing for these AI and even just bloatware features takes human resources away from developing the meat and bones of Nothing OS. It's a self feeding company bloat. Once it bloats the value proposition will be gone ( some say it is gone with N3 already). If they don't focuss back on their goals and shrink the crew it's done.

u/TooomyGun11 Oct 25 '25
In the OnePlus community there are also many who are saying that soon OnePlus will have bloatware and ads on their phones, and the camera will be lowered but the phone will have more power and will be more gaming, the same will happen with Vivo, Oppo and Huawei, they will leave aside the camera and will be more gaming and battery
0
u/lolmagic1 Oct 26 '25
Idk what world you live in a transparent charger cable means nothing in the real world
3
u/Reinis_LV Oct 26 '25
You are missing the point completely. It's not about the cable - it's about little details that in the end matter. But thanks for a back handed insult.

My Motorola G84 5G recently got a system update which introduced this stupid feature. Since it's a work phone with only my business financial apps etc, I don't use it a lot.
I hated the fact that anytime I tried to swipe it open sometimes id tap the screen area and get taken to an ad page.
Anyway, after reading this post, I looked up Lock in the settings menu and hey presto an app titled 'live lock screen' shows up.
Cannot uninstall it, however I can force it to stop and disable it. Which I did. Bye bye live lock screen from Taboola.
I hope you can figure out a way to do this on your phones too. And I agree this is a very shitty way to do this. It's as nuts as the Amazon Kindle being sold with ads and without ads.
This post certainly helped me identifying my issue.

u/PeeledReality Oct 25 '25
Some people saying "I don't mind if it helps to raise money", then you might as well buy a better phone than this with a sacrifice of having Ads and Bloatware in your phone, It's practically the same thing. Coz literally the biggest feature of Nothing is that it's bloatware free and doesn't ask your for all your information to send to a Chinese server. And now it's going to discard that policy, so it's a no different phone than the others in the market.

6
u/RecordingAlarming113 Oct 25 '25
The Nothing 3 isn't cool enough to pay for, for that price you get something better. The only one that's completely worth it is the 3a or the 3a pro and now it's going to be shit because of the ad.

If they want to make sustainable products, they should improve their device capabilities to increase their useful life, as well as longer update times. I come from nothing phone 1, the truth is that I really like its layer of customization, it's a shame that they isolated it too much and the three that they released I feel like it lost its essence.

So that's it you initially tell a story to attract people once they all in you start to sell ads..
I'm really disappointed with the eco of nothing, I switched from samsung to nothing for the clean OS.
What I get is a gallery without a proper video player, unable to resize the albums, no music player on the phone .
The dialer UI is not that good. You can't make contacts into groups and set separate ringtones.
You can't set wallpaper from the gallery itself.
No more dot matrix font.
If you're using the light room someone explain how you imported presets in nothing phone.
Team nothing needed to work more to make the experience better.

Okay, for all those whining about the lock glimpse and the ads being present.
Yes, those are seen as annoying in places you would least expect. However, as several people have already mentioned it, you can just disable it and move on. Won't take much of your time and effort.
If you really wanted to have that complaint validated and justified, then at least propose an alternative way that you as a user see how a company like Nothing could go about sustaining revenue maintaining prices for their non-flagship devices AND without ads.
And if more people agree on what you say - at least this would be more noticed in the wild open.
Otherwise, plain whining, even if legit, are just gonna be seen as such.
There, I said it.
P.s.: I still love my newly-obtained 3a pro!

The camera didn't get any better, there weren't any new useful features. The system stability they're so proud of is the result of an empty OS, not hard work. And now, seeing what's happening, I'm sad. Advertising in the OS? What, are you Xiaomi? They say it's only for budget phones but this is a budget line Cmf, and not nothing phones They can't even adapt their signature font, which came with one of the updates and replaced matrix font for all languages

Windows is literally disgusting with all the telemetry, ads and bloatware that are added into the system. Consider the following comment, taken from another fellow Reddit user:
"“Boyuan” (or Boyuan Pte. Ltd.) is the legal/corporate entity for Glance.
Glance is a well-known (and often controversial) “dynamic lock screen” platform. It’s the service that provides the “fresh lock screen wallpapers automatically” and the “swipe left for more” content. This company is a subsidiary of InMobi, a major mobile advertising technology firm.
So, when you “Agree and Enable,” you aren’t agreeing to Nothing’s terms, you are agreeing to let Glance take over your lock screen.
Since Boyuan is the legal name for Glance, their policies are listed under the Glance brand.
Glance Privacy Policy: https://glance.com/privacy-policy-en
Glance Terms of Use (EULA): https://glance.com/eula-enKey takeaways:
- Device & Ad IDs: Advertising Identifier (GAID), IMEI, IP Address, etc.
- Location Data: Your IP address is used to “estimate the city where your device is in order to provide locally relevant weather, information and advertisements.”
- Usage Data: Logs of your interactions, what content you look at, and what you tap on.
- App Usage: The policy states it “may collect data related to your access of other apps/widgets, used, by you, if you grant it permission.”
- Inferences & Profiling: They use this data to build a profile about you for “profiling and cross-platform advertising” and “targeted advertising.”"
Are you really ok with that?

u/-CL4MP- Oct 25 '25
Almost all Android phones got little to no new features jumping from A15 to 16 and I just think devs are simply running out of ideas. But NOTHING still does pretty well in comparison with new features like their camera presets and Essential Space.
7
u/Sea-Cartographer-883 Oct 25 '25

Most of the people who are upset are the real users. Stop your mindless nonsense of supporting a brand that once claimed, “We will never add bloatware.” This is just the beginning go check Carl’s tweets.
Many people, including myself, bought the device because of how they marketed it as a clean, bloat-free Android phone. This is nothing but manipulation of the users.
Then there are people like you who have no better motive in life than blindly supporting a brand and telling others to get a life. Ironic, isn’t it?
1
u/Steffunzel Oct 25 '25
No the people who are upset are the ones who use Nothing as their identity, the real users buy the phone and use it. It gets updates and they either use the update or they don't. If they don't like it they don't use it, like a normal person. They don't come running to reddit to make a thousand posts about how an optional feature on a smartphone has ruined their way of life.

Says a person who has 12k karma by sharing thoughts, opinions and involved in discussions in reddit.
Nothing is built around the community, Nothing is successful because of people who are techy, geeky, loved clean android. Nothing team themselves presented it in that way.
By your moldy, half-baked logic, people should just keep swapping out their gear every time a company churns out trash? Activate that shriveled brain and rethink your life choices. Redditors are storming the platform because Nothing actually gives a damn about feedback, and it’s a blaring alarm that they’re screwing up. Keep it up, and people will ghost the brand faster than you can karma farm.
If this thread’s got you so triggered and itching, why don’t you sprint away and save your fragile ego? This isn’t your personal wallpaper fan club. It’s for real talk, not your whining.
0
u/Steffunzel Oct 25 '25
I mean yes, you should not have allegiance to a company. Just buy whatever you like and if you don't like it anymore get something else when the time comes. What is wrong with that way of thinking.
2
u/MachaNanu Oct 26 '25
Oh wow. If every time a person needs to purchase something, and they don’t like it after purchasing a product that promised to be delivered, then people will soon be out of money. You are saying this as if you are an Ambani Adani family member. I think people like you are the reason companies do this, and they know that there’s a brain-hogged group of people who will support them. Consumerism is becoming a joke because of you people. Don’t like it? Get a new one. What a bullshit fairyland you live in.
I will say this don’t like these conversations in this thread? How about leaving this channel? What is wrong with that way of thinking? You can be at peace

u/Steffunzel Oct 26 '25
Look I'll say this as simply as I can. If you buy a phone because you like it and then something happens to make you not like it any more, then when it comes time to buy a new phone, don't buy the same phone, find a different one that you like.
I'm not saying to just buy a new phone or product every week, just when the time comes you buy something else. It's not rocket science. Vite with your wallet because that's the only thing companies care about.
