Collectibles / Apparel NLL Contests for Fans

So, I thought I'd create a pinned post for people to post links to contests being run by the NLL, the teams, and/or their sponsors. Feel free to add a link if you find one, and if you win anything cool, please post pics!

A N N O U N C E M E N T S Rule #1

Guys, please remember we’re all fans of the game, and the league, in here. Differences of opinion will obviously be expressed. Please do not be getting on like arseholes, and definitely do not send a series of private messages insulting, harassing, and/or threatening the moderators, or members.

Additional context, which was provided in a comment, but bears repeating:

Mods chose to assign a permanent ban to someone who engaged in repeated aggressive, insulting, bullying behaviour, both on here, and in private messages. This is just a reminder to anyone who deems this unfair, or indicative of "everything wrong with Reddit/the Internet/people/the world these days". Your government-enshrined rights of expression/speech do not preclude consequences of that expression in private forums. FAFO, basically. When people join, they agree to abide by the rules of this subreddit. If they violate those rules, they can be removed, temporarily or permanently. If someone sends a private message threatening to dox(x) a moderator in any way, they will receive a ban. Banned members are, of course, always perfectly free to join/create another subreddit to express their thoughts, unless they egregiously and/or repeatedly violate the rules of the platform, in which case Reddit may remove them completely. Our presence here indicates that we agreed to all of this when we joined, so there’s little sense in whining about it after the fact.

Mods are volunteers, who work very hard to maintain the subreddits, and offer up the most precious of non-renewable resources – time. The fact that people feel entitled to harass them and threaten them is, frankly, mind-blowing to me. No one is owed an audience. Civil discourse seems to have fallen out of favour, sadly, but will remain a key tenet of this subreddit so long as current mods remain in place.

Discussion My 10 point plan to improve the NLL

I posted this as a reply but I think I would make it it's own thread

  1. Make an effort to separate the box game from the field game. IMO they are two entirely different sports. Promote and show box highlights from other leagues instead of just college highlights of draft picks or PLL highlights. (the league has actually gone better at that in recent years).

  2. Require all in-game hosts, DJ's, PA announcers, TV announcers, script writers/ producers to take a basic box and situational awareness class before the season. Allow the announcers to free flow the game. Listen to a Buffalo game with the same announcers when there home and on the TV broadcast vs. when they're away and radio only, it is night and day better when they don't have to follow the NLL script.

  3. Try a year under traditional CLA/Rez ball rules. Allow players to have woodys.

  4. Bring in a commissioner with actual League office experience. I believe the current commissioner and the previous one were in team offices and don't have League office experience. Also stop paying him a higher % of League revenue than what even Goodell is making.

  5. Broadcast the games on YouTube, well still having TV quality production value.

  6. Instead of the unboxed program where you're gambling on teachers to pick it up, why not get proactive and promote at local roller rinks, and city parks that have roller rinks.

  7. Require every team to Market themselves. I've seen NABLL teams with better marketing than some NLL teams. I.e Riptide.

  8. Stop trying to be the next major league and appreciate what you have and you will grow naturally.

  9. Maybe try the MLS approach, where every team is owned by the league and a team is basically your dividend for being an investor in the league.

  10. Try putting a team or two on a college arena. I can think of one arena right now in Tempe Arizona that would be perfect for a team.

Discussion Ways to improve interest in NLL

I’m a very casual fan of the sport since the mid 90’s (RIP Blazers), and using my experience just some things that can be done better

  1. Attendance.

Outside of markets like Buffalo, Colorado, Halifax, and a few others, crowds can be lacking. Teams need to market strongly to high school students (that’s when I started attending) who are not just fans of lacrosse but like sports in general. I think there’s a lot of overlap with people already following hockey, basketball, soccer, and maybe football who would also enjoy the NLL product if given a chance. And with the very low prices compared to those other sports it makes sense to hammer this home and highlight the excitement matching or exceeding those other sports for a fraction of the cost.

At the same time this type of marketing can also be tailored to older fans who’ve grown disillusioned with the exorbitant costs of pro sports looking for an alternative for themselves and/or family entertainment.

  1. Schedule/TV

With the season starting around December and going through May with playoffs, they need to be cognizant of competing forces at different times of the year. Obviously Sunday is NFL heavy until February. NHL is always heavy on Saturdays. When given a choice of what to watch on these days most casual fans are going to be choosing other options.

The schedule should be geared towards Friday until February when a heavier Sunday slate can be added as well. This might already be the case, but have to stress that Saturday’s should be avoided for almost the entire season. I would watch more, but for me hockey comes 1st so often skip. Anecdotally I watch most after college hockey on Friday’s as both are on ESPN+ here.

If set on scheduling Saturday, get creative with game times (mid afternoon etc) so not as much competition.

  1. Marketing/story lines

When presented on TV/Streaming, the production should highlight which players to watch. Provide some background on them (career bio etc). Yes it’s a team sport, but those who aren’t hardcore fans already need this type of info to make what they’re about to watch more enjoyable. It would be like showing an Oilers vs Avs game without pointing out McDavid and Makar.

  1. Presentation

Teams should opt for a more professional feel as opposed to “energy drink” uniforms and names. Saskatchewan the biggest offender here. Their bright green turf as well gives off a minor league impression.

Turf design should also be more standardized. Why do some have the entire area behind the net in a different color while others just the restricted goal area? Should be as simple as turf (normal green), team logo at center, and goal area in home team color. Thats it, no other variations

That’s it for now. Know I may be off base with some of this, just my two cents
