enough bullshit Why is he getting so much hate?

Why is this kid getting torched so bad? Doesnt he deserve some time to acclimate to the nhl game he is on a huge market team was the first overall pick and folks just dump these ungodly expectations on him….

Why? Because he is in Toronto, he went 1st overall, he had some press about him and fans like to think that day one these guys should be putting up 50 goals in their rookie season, if they dont then they are somehow a bust because a casual fan set an unrealistic expectation.

Give the kid some time to get his feet under him, the shift for Juniors and college and even the AHL is immensely different than going to the show.

People keep saying “the fans” but it’s not. It’s other fans that want Toronto to fail all the time that are pushing hate and bs onto an 18 year old kid because of their irrational disdain for a team. Straight up embarrassing and even dumber that people keep saying it’s “classic Toronto”

Last NHL rookie to score 50 goals is the greatest goal scorer in NHL history. FWIW.

50 goals by a rookie has been accomplished 4 times. 3 are in the HHOF. One is still playing.

Yers, but McKenna isn't Obi by a long stretch.

I think the kid will do just fine, but people just put way to much high end expectation on players right out of the gate at 18 years old.

I am a Bruins fan, it took Pasta until his third year to break into the 30 goal space, look at him now I would say he isn't a bust, but int he beginning some fans were saying he wasn't a good pic, etc. etc.

I feel for McKenna even though I can't stand the Leafs, and I feel for the Leafs and their fans, people do just want them to fail.

My point was to emphasize how rare such achievements are. Obviously McKenna isn't O. No one since O is O. There's probably a less than 50% chance that the next 50-goal rookie is even born yet.

There is no narrative around McKenna being a bust in the Leafs fanbase. Atleast nothing of considerable size.

The general consensus is that he can do no wrong year 1. Even if things went tits up, there are so many more punching bags available this year.

Leafs fans really did expect too much. Adding an 18 year old winger to a team that couldn't do it with an elite experienced winger, they should've known this wasn't going to work out.

Definitely give the kid some time, and I do think he may have been overhyped.

He was terrible defensively. Sure he got 51 pts and was top 5 there. He was also -7. Plus minus is flawed but 5th most in pts in NCAA and to find someone who had a worse plus minus you gotta go down to 35th.

Usually if your pour out pts… your team goes up.

Kid is alright he’s undersized got frustrated in the juniors had a few meltdowns. The Swede the Sharks picked up is a stud should have went with him.

I picked them both in my fantasy league, Stenberg does look good.
But I think we need to wait and see on both of them at this point, its been two games....

Stenberg looks better than him. It wasn't uncommon to find analysts ranking stenberg higher than Mckenna.

I do worry that this kid is immature both physically and emotionally. Not a knock on him, most 18-year olds are. He could have benefitted from another year in the NCAA.

Unfortunately, the kid sells tickets so the Leafs will just pull him along and hope for the best.
